What Is a Global Talent Visa in the UK?
A Global Talent visa is an immigration route that allows talented foreign nationals to come and work in the UK without requiring a valid job offer from an employer.
If you are considered to be a leader (‘exceptional talent’) or a potential leader (‘exceptional promise’) in fields like science, engineering, digital technology, architecture, design, arts and culture, humanities, social sciences, medicine, fashion design, or film and television, you may be eligible to apply for a Global Talent visa.
A Global Talent visa holder may apply for a suitable job when in the UK or be self-employed, or serve as a director of a company.
Their eligible family members can also come and live in the UK as their dependants.
The visa is valid for up to five years. You can renew it as many times as you want and for as long as you choose (i.e., up to five years at a time).
Alternatively, you may apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK after three or five years, depending on your field of work and how you initially applied for the visa.

- Evidence of talent: For endorsement, you must demonstrate that you are a recognised leader or potential leader in your field, with evidence appropriate to your profession.
- Age: You must be 18 or over.
- English language/salary: There is no minimum salary or English-language requirement for the Global Talent Visa itself.
- Application: If using endorsement, you normally need to apply for the visa within 3 months of receiving your endorsement letter.
- Fees: You must pay total application fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge.
- Documents: You generally need a valid passport/identity document and, where applicable, a TB certificate and certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh.
Eligible Prestigious Prizes for Global Talent Visa UK

Endorsement Routes for Global Talent Visa UK
Overview
If you have not won an eligible prize named on the official list, you must obtain an endorsement before applying for a Global Talent visa.
An endorsing body will assess whether you are a leader, known as exceptional talent, or a potential leader, known as exceptional promise, in one of these fields:
- Academia or research
- Arts and culture
- Digital technology
The Home Office sends the endorsement application to the relevant approved organisation for assessment. You must submit your Global Talent visa application within three months of receiving your endorsement.

For most applicants, the first hurdle is endorsement from a Home Office-approved body, confirming that they’ve been recognised as a leader or potential leader in their field.
Applicants who’ve won an eligible prize from Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes can skip this step entirely.
Beyond that, the rules are split by field. What counts as evidence, and how much of it you need, depends on your discipline and whether you’re applying as exceptional talent or exceptional promise.
Arts and Culture
Arts Council England covers combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, and visual arts.
The baseline is outstanding work, performed, presented, distributed, or exhibited internationally, with regular professional engagement over the last 5 years.
- A CV and three dated letters: two from established arts organisations you’ve worked with (one UK-based), and a third from another organisation or an individual with recognised standing in your field
- Exceptional talent: a substantial track record across at least two countries, backed by two qualifying pieces of evidence, significant media recognition, an international award, or internationally significant exhibitions, sales, or appearances
- Exceptional promise: an early-career applicant with a developing track record in one or more countries, still needing two forms of evidence
Architecture
RIBA handles architecture endorsements on behalf of the Arts Council England.
The bar is the same shape as arts and culture, outstandingly presented, published, or internationally exhibited work, with 5 years of regular engagement in the field.
- A CV and three letters: two from established architecture organisations (one UK-based), a third from another organisation or a recognised individual
- Exceptional talent: a track record spanning two countries
- Exceptional promise: a track record in one country
- Either route needs two qualifying pieces of evidence, an award, media recognition, or internationally significant publications or exhibitions
Design Industry
A new field was added to Appendix Global Talent in 2026, endorsed by the Design Business Association (DBA) on behalf of Arts Council England. It covers product, graphic, UX, service, industrial, and spatial design, among other design disciplines.
You must be professionally engaged in producing outstanding applied, published, distributed, or internationally exhibited work, with regular professional design work over the last 5 years.
- A CV and 3 dated letters of recommendation, 2 from well-established design organisations you have worked with (at least one UK-based) and a third from another organisation or individual with recognised experience in design
- Exceptional talent: a substantial track record in at least 2 countries, evidenced by significant media recognition, an international design award, or internationally significant professional appearances, publications, exhibitions, or sales
- Exceptional promise: an early-career applicant with a developing track record in one or more countries, evidenced by recent media recognition, an award nomination or shortlisting, or recognised appearances, publications, or exhibitions
Fashion Design Industry
The British Fashion Council assesses this field. You need a leading design role in a fashion business, plus 5 years of regular industry engagement.
- A CV and 3 dated letters of recommendation, 2 from well-established fashion organisations (at least one UK-based) and a third from another organisation or individual with recognised expertise
- Exceptional talent: outstanding work sold or exhibited internationally through catwalk or other shows, with a substantial track record in at least 2 countries
- Exceptional promise: a developing track record in at least 1 country, which can be evidenced through support from schemes such as British Fashion Council initiatives, Fashion East, or The Sarabande Foundation, or through orders from a luxury retailer
Film and Television
Pact assesses this field for Arts Council England, and only for exceptional talent; there’s no exceptional promise route here.
- A Main Award win at any point (Academy Award, an eligible BAFTA, Golden Globe, or Emmy)
- A nomination for, or significant contribution to, a Main Award in the last 10 years
- At least two Main Award nominations across the last 15 years
- Notable industry recognition across at least two productions, backed by distribution sales, media coverage, and the right mix of awards from Pact’s Notable Industry Recognition Awards List
- A CV and three letters are still required, two from established film and television organisations (one UK-based)
Digital Technology
Endorsed by Tech Nation. What counts as “exceptional” varies by applicant type: technical applicants need proven expertise in building or deploying technology stacks and infrastructure; business applicants need commercial, investment, or product expertise in leading digital businesses.
- A CV containing career and publication history
- Three dated recommendation letters from different established digital technology experts who have known the applicant’s work for at least 12 months
- Up to 10 documents showing that the applicant meets the evidential criteria
- Evidence of their connection to a digital technology business if they have been a founder or senior executive during the last 5 years
- Exceptional talent: applicants must provide at least two pieces of evidence across two qualifying criteria. These criteria cover innovation, recognition beyond the applicant’s occupation, significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions, and academic contributions through expert-endorsed or published research
- Exceptional promise: applicants must be at an early stage of their career and provide at least two pieces of evidence across two qualifying criteria. Their evidence can show innovation, recognition beyond their occupation, contributions as a founder or employee of a product-led digital technology company, or academic contributions through research endorsed by an expert
Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science and Medicine
The Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Academy, and UKRI split this territory among themselves by discipline.
Whichever body assesses you, you’ll need to already be an active researcher, academic, industry professional, or government employee.
- Fast track: applicants must hold, or have held in the last 5 years, an eligible peer-reviewed fellowship or award; hold an eligible academic or research appointment at an approved UK institution; or be hosted by a UKRI-approved organisation on a substantial research grant
- Academic appointments specifically must require a PhD or equivalent research experience, with research or innovation leadership built into the role
- Full peer review: a PhD or equivalent, active research work, and, for exceptional promise applicants, still early in career
- Full peer-review applicants need a CV and a letter from an eminent UK-based figure; exceptional talent applicants need a second letter from a senior figure at a recognised research or innovation organisation

Global Talent Visa Endorsement Application Process
The Global Talent visa endorsement application is completed online. You need an email address to complete the Home Office form, “Apply for Global Talent endorsement – stage 1”.
After you submit the endorsement application, the Home Office sends it to the relevant endorsing body. The endorsing body assesses whether you meet the endorsement criteria as a leader (exceptional talent) or a potential leader (exceptional promise) in your field.
The endorsement criteria and required evidence differ by field and route. Applicants in academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology must meet the requirements set by the relevant endorsing body.
Applicants must provide evidence supporting their application for exceptional talent or exceptional promise. The required documents depend on the endorsement route and may include recommendation letters, evidence of achievements, a CV, proof of employment or evidence of an eligible research grant.
If your endorsement application is successful, the Home Office will email you a copy of your endorsement letter. An endorsement does not guarantee that your Global Talent visa application will be approved.
You can apply for a Global Talent visa either at the same time as your endorsement application or after your endorsement has been confirmed. If you apply after receiving your endorsement letter, your visa application must be made within three months of the date on the letter. The organisation that endorsed you must also not have withdrawn its approval.
Supporting Documents for Global Talent Visa Endorsement
To apply for a Global Talent visa endorsement, you must submit evidence showing that you are recognised as a leader, known as exceptional talent, or a potential leader, known as exceptional promise, in your field.
The supporting-document requirements depend on the endorsement field and route. Appendix Global Talent of the Immigration Rules sets out the evidential requirements, while GOV.UK guidance provides further information about the documents and their required format.
Applicants seeking endorsement in digital technology must provide the following documents:
A typed CV of no more than three A4 pages that includes career and relevant publication history
Three dated letters of recommendation from different established experts in digital technology who have known the applicant’s work for at least 12 months
Evidence of a connection to a technology business if the applicant has been a founder or senior executive within the last five years
A maximum of 10 evidence documents showing that the applicant meets the digital technology criteria
Each recommendation letter must provide distinct examples of the applicant’s achievements, skills, experience, and contributions to the digital technology sector. The letters must explain how the author knows the applicant, why the applicant shows exceptional talent or exceptional promise, and the contribution the applicant is expected to make to the UK digital technology field.
The evidence documents must include:
At least two documents showing recognition as a leading talent or potential talent in digital technology
At least four documents showing that the applicant meets two qualifying criteria, using two documents for each criterion
Applicants for exceptional talent or exceptional promise must evidence at least two qualifying criteria. Depending on the category, these criteria may include:
Innovation as a founder or employee working in a new digital technology field or concept
Recognition for work outside the applicant’s occupation that advances the digital technology sector
Significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to a product-led digital technology company
Exceptional ability shown through research published or endorsed by an expert
Applicants who have been founders or senior executives must also provide evidence of commercially successful established businesses, share ownership or businesses dissolved within the last 5 years.
What Documents Do I Need to Apply for a Global Talent Visa UK?
When applying for a Global Talent visa, you must provide documents that establish your identity and support the route under which you are applying.
The documents required depend on your circumstances.
You may need to provide:
- A valid passport or other travel document that establishes your identity and nationality
- Tuberculosis test results if you are from a country where you must take the test
- Written permission to apply if you received an award or scholarship to study in the UK during the last 12 months, and it was granted by a government or international scholarship agency
- Your endorsement letter, if you are applying through the endorsement route
- Evidence that you have won an eligible prize if the Home Office cannot verify your award using publicly available information
If you apply through the eligible prize route, the prize must be named in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes, and you must be the named recipient. The Home Office will check publicly available information, such as the prize organisation’s website, before asking for further evidence of the award.
The Home Office may request further documents where required to assess your application. You must also prove your identity by using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by providing biometric information, depending on the instructions issued during your application.
Documents submitted with the application must be in English or Welsh. If a document is in another language, submit the original document and a full certified translation. The translation must confirm that it is accurate, be dated, include the translator’s or translation company’s name and contact details, and include the required certification details.
How to Apply for a UK Global Talent Visa?
Global Talent visa applications are completed online. The application process depends on whether you are applying from outside the UK, switching from an eligible immigration route within the UK or extending your current Global Talent visa.
If you need endorsement, you can apply for endorsement and the Global Talent visa at the same time. You can also wait until the Home Office has confirmed your endorsement before applying for the visa.
Follow these steps to apply:
- Create or sign in to your UK Visas and Immigration account using your email address
- Prepare the documents and information required for your application
- Complete the online Global Talent visa application form
- Upload or provide the documents requested during the application
- Pay the relevant visa fee and immigration health surcharge, where required
- Prove your identity by using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by attending an appointment if instructed to do so
You will be told how to prove your identity after submitting your online application. The process depends on your nationality and passport type.
If you are eligible to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app, you can scan your identity document and create or sign in to your UK Visas and Immigration account.
If you need to attend an appointment, the location depends on where you apply:
- Applicants outside the UK attend a visa application centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph
- Applicants switching to a Global Talent visa from inside the UK attend a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services service point if instructed to do so
You may need to travel to attend a visa application centre, as the closest available centre may be outside your country of residence. Applicants applying from a country other than their nationality country must have permission to live there for at least 6 months.
Not all applicants in the UK can switch to a Global Talent visa. Visitors, short-term students, parents of a Child Student, seasonal workers, domestic workers in a private household and people with permission outside the Immigration Rules must apply from outside the UK instead.
Global Talent Visa Application Fee for 2026
The Global Talent visa application fee is £766 per applicant. The payment structure depends on whether you apply through the endorsement route or the eligible prize route.
Applicants using the endorsement route pay the £766 fee in two parts:

The £561 endorsement fee and £205 visa application fee are the same for applications made from outside the UK and applications made from inside the UK.
Applicants using the eligible prize route do not need endorsement. They pay the full £766 Global Talent visa application fee when submitting their visa application.
Each partner or child applying as a dependant must pay a £766 application fee. This fee is the same whether they apply from outside or inside the UK.
Applicants must also pay the immigration health surcharge unless an exemption applies. The annual surcharge rates are:

An adult applicant applying for 5 years’ permission would pay £5,175 in the immigration health surcharge. A child under 18 applying for the same period would pay £3,880. The final surcharge amount depends on the length of the permission requested.
Global Talent Visa Processing Time
After you have applied online, proved your identity and provided the required documents, UK Visas and Immigration aims to decide Global Talent visa applications within:

These are estimated processing periods, not guaranteed decision dates. Processing may take longer where UK Visas and Immigration needs to verify information, request further evidence, arrange an interview or assess personal circumstances. Processing volumes and visa application centre availability may also affect the time required.
You may be able to pay for a priority or super priority service to receive a quicker visa decision. The available services depend on the country where you apply and the options shown during the application process.
Priority services cannot be used for an endorsement application. Applicants must wait for the stage 1 endorsement decision before using a priority service for the stage 2 visa application.
Applicants using the endorsement route should also account for the endorsement assessment period:

The fast-track academia or research routes include eligible academic or research appointments, individual fellowships and UKRI-approved research grants. Peer review is a separate endorsement route with a 5-week published decision period.
UK Global Talent Visa Validity and Renewal
A Global Talent visa can be granted for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years. Applicants choose the length of permission requested when applying. There is no limit on the total time a person can hold permission on the Global Talent route, provided they continue to meet the extension requirements.
You can apply to extend a Global Talent visa for up to 5 years at a time. To qualify for an extension, you must show that you earned money in the UK during your last period of Global Talent permission.
The income must relate to:
- The field in which you were endorsed, if your original application used the endorsement route
- The subject matter of your eligible prize, if your original application used the eligible prize route
Evidence of income may include payslips, bank statements, invoices, contracts, or other documents that show paid work in the relevant field.
Applicants who first received a Global Talent visa through the endorsement route must also meet these requirements:
- The endorsing body must not have withdrawn its approval
- The endorsing body must remain approved by the Home Office when the extension application is decided
Applicants who first received a Global Talent visa through the eligible prize route must show that their prize has not been withdrawn.
If you hold a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa, you can apply to extend your stay under the Global Talent route.
Your partner and children can apply to extend their permission as your dependants if they remain eligible. Each dependant must submit a separate application, either at the same time as your application or before their current visa expires.
You and each dependant should apply before your current permission expires. A valid application made before expiry allows you to remain in the UK while the Home Office considers the application.
Can I Use My Global Talent Visa to Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain?
The Global Talent route can lead to indefinite leave to remain, also known as ILR or settlement. ILR allows a person to live in the UK without a time limit.
You may qualify for ILR after 3 or 5 years of continuous lawful residence in the UK. The required qualifying period depends on the route through which you obtained Global Talent permission.
You may apply after 3 years if:
- You were endorsed by the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy or UK Research and Innovation
- You received an Arts Council England or Tech Nation endorsement under the exceptional talent criteria
- You were granted Global Talent permission through the eligible prize route
You may apply after 5 years if you received an Arts Council England or Tech Nation endorsement under the exceptional promise criteria.
To qualify for ILR, you must also meet the settlement requirements. These include:
- Completing the required period of continuous lawful residence in the UK
- Spending no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period, unless an exception applies
- Continuing to earn money in the relevant field
- Meeting the English-language requirement at level B1
- Passing the Life in the UK Test
- Meeting the suitability requirements for settlement
Some absences for research may be excluded from the 180-day limit for applicants endorsed by the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Academy, or UKRI. This exclusion can also apply to eligible prize holders in science, engineering, the humanities, or medicine, where the absence was due to work related to their field.
An endorsement or eligible prize allows an applicant to pursue the Global Talent visa route, but it does not guarantee approval of the visa or a later ILR application. The Home Office assesses every application against the relevant Immigration Rules.
Can I Switch to the Global Talent Visa UK?
You may be able to switch to a Global Talent visa if you are in the UK with permission on an eligible immigration route. You must apply before your current permission expires.
If you have won an eligible prestigious prize, you can apply directly for a Global Talent visa without obtaining endorsement. The prize must remain eligible and must not have been withdrawn or suspended.
If you do not have an eligible prestigious prize, you must obtain endorsement as a leader or potential leader in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. You must submit the Global Talent visa application within three months of the endorsement letter date. The endorsing body must not have withdrawn its approval.
Student visa holders can apply to switch only if at least one of the following applies:
- They have completed the course of study for which their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was issued
- They have completed an eligible replacement course
- They are studying full-time for a PhD and have completed at least 24 months of that course
You cannot switch to a Global Talent visa from inside the UK if you have, or were last granted, permission in any of the following categories:
- Visitor
- Short-term student
- Parent of a Child Student
- Seasonal Worker
- Domestic worker in a private household
- Immigration bail
- Permission outside the Immigration Rules, such as permission granted on compassionate grounds
If you are in one of these categories, you must leave the UK and apply for a Global Talent visa from outside the UK.
Your partner and children must submit separate applications if they are switching to Global Talent dependant permission. They can apply at the same time as you or before their current permission expires.
Your partner and children on a Global Talent Visa
Your partner and eligible children can apply as dependants of a Global Talent Visa holder. A partner can generally be a spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner who meets the relationship requirements, while children must normally be under 18 or already have dependant status in the UK.
Each dependant makes a separate application, pays the visa fee and healthcare surcharge, and provides evidence of the relationship. Dependant partners and children can generally work and study in the UK, although they cannot access most public funds.
