Immigrating To UK From Ghana: An Introduction

Many Ghanaians visit the UK for tourism, studies or work.

In 2022, the Home Office issued over 3,700 study visas to Ghanaians. In the same year, the Home Office approved over 17,000 visitor visas for Ghanaians who wanted to tour the UK. As of 2019, there were over 113,000 Ghanaians who had permanently settled in the UK.

There are many reasons Ghanaians choose the UK such as the ease of language and integration. Since the lingua franca of Ghana is English, citizens opt to move to the UK, where there will be no language barrier.

The UK is also a coveted destination for those looking to study in a world-class educational system.

Many Ghanaians move to the UK for work. The UK has one of Europe’s largest and most diverse labour markets. The visa application process for UK visas is straightforward and relatively easy to understand.

    UK Student Visa

Ghanaians can apply for a Student visa if they want to study in the UK, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. There are 3 types of Student visas Ghanaians can apply for:

    • Short-term Study visa for an English language course
    • Child Student visa for primary and secondary school students
    • Student visa for tertiary education

Before you apply for any of these visas, you’ll have to have been accepted by a school in the UK. The school serves as your sponsor for the visa application. You must prove to the Home Office that you have enough money to pay your tuition and cover your living expenses. You must also show that you have adequate English language skills. If you are applying for a Child Student visa, you need to prove to the Home Office that your parents consented to your immigration to the UK for studies.

Your student visa duration depends on how long your course will take. Ghanaians can no longer move to the UK with their family on this visa. The only exceptions are those carrying out research or getting their doctorate. You can work with a student visa. However, there are restrictions. You have only 20 hours to work every week, but you can work full-time during school breaks.

      UK Work Visas

Ghanaians can also move to the UK to work. However, they will need a job offer from a UK employer with a valid sponsor licence. Your employer must also be willing to pay you £26,200 yearly or £10.75 hourly. You must also be at least 18 to apply. There are many work visas in the UK. Here are some of them:

      Health and Care Worker Visa

If you are a health professional in Ghana, you can apply to work for the NHS or an adult caregiver service. You could work as a doctor, nurse, medical laboratory scientist or professional caregiver.

Note that from March 2024, you can no longer come to the UK with your dependents on this visa. You can work in the UK on this visa for up to 5 years before you renew.

The Health and Care Worker visa is a route to permanent residency after working for 5 years. You can switch jobs in the UK on this visa, but your new employer will have to sponsor you again. Ghanaians who apply for this visa do not pay for the healthcare surcharge.

      Required Documents

You can move to the UK with your family, but this visa is not a route towards permanent settlement in the UK.

        Visa Application Process

If you want to apply for a UK visa from Ghana, you’ll need to follow the process below:

        • Find out the kind of visa you require to travel to the UK. If you apply for the wrong visa, you’ll waste money and time and still get denied by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)
        • Prepare your supporting documents. This is vital because these documents prove you meet the requirements for the visa
        • Apply online at the relevant portal on the Home Office’s website. You’ll also attach your supporting documents here. Ensure the information on your documents match the ones you input on the portal
        • Pay the visa fee and attach the receipt to the portal as well
        • Make an appointment with the nearest visa application centre in your country. Your biometric information and passport will be collected at the centre. If you have challenges uploading your documents at the portal, the centre’s officers can help you
        • Collect your visa when ready and plan your travel to the UK

        Residency & Citizenship Routes

The work and UK business visas are the routes to residency and citizenship. Ghanaians can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after spending 3 to 5 years in the UK. To apply, you must prove that you have a relevant visa and that your work pays you at least the minimum salary requirement.

You’ll also need to confirm you have sufficient knowledge of English and pass the Life in the UK test. If your ILR application is approved, you’ll need to hold it for 1 year before applying for British citizenship.

Every British citizen has the right to a British passport, which allows access to the borders of the UK and its territories.
