Eligibility for Moving to the UK From USA
The requirements you need to meet will depend on the UK visa you are applying for. There is no single set of eligibility requirements for US citizens moving to the UK.
Depending on the route, you may need to provide evidence of your employment, relationship, finances, studies, sponsorship, or other aspects of your circumstances.
You may have a route available to you if:
- You have a family member who is a UK national
- Your spouse or partner is a British citizen
- You have a job offer from a UK-based organization
- You work for a US organization that has a branch in the UK and is willing to transfer you to the UK branch
- You are able and ready to start a business in the UK
- You have an ancestral connection to the UK.
Meeting the basic eligibility criteria does not necessarily mean that an application will be straightforward. You will also need to provide the required evidence and satisfy the specific conditions of your chosen immigration route.
What UK Visas Are Available When Moving to the UK From USA?
US citizens can apply under a number of UK immigration routes. Which one is appropriate will depend largely on why you want to move and what you intend to do once you are in the UK. For example, you may qualify through your employment, relationship with someone in the UK, studies or business activities. Some of the main options are outlined below.
UK Work and Employment Visas
If you are coming to the UK through an employment route, you can apply for any of the following visas:
UK Business Visas
You can move to the UK through the UK business visa route if you are a ‘high-value migrant’ with the ability and readiness to invest, set up a business, or work in some fields regarded as ‘exceptional talent’ in the UK. There are different subcategories, which include:
- Global Talent Visa: This category is for individuals who work in certain fields and are recognized as leaders in their field. These professions include medicine, science, engineering, and the arts.
- Innovator Founder Visa: You can apply for this visa if you want to set up and run an innovative business in the UK.
- Investor Visa: You may qualify for this if you have access to at least £2 million, which you can invest in the UK. (You can no longer apply for a new Tier 1 (Investor) visa.)
- Start-Up Visa: You can apply for this route if you are coming to the UK to start your first business. The startup visa doesn’t have a specific minimum investment amount. The important thing is to demonstrate that the business has strong growth potential. (You can no longer apply for a Start-up visa.)
UK Work Visas
You can move to the UK from the US on a work visa if you have been offered a skilled job by a UK employer. The occupation must be on the Shortage Occupations List, and your prospective employer must have a certificate of sponsorship. The subcategories are as follows:
- Skilled Worker Visa: This category is for people who have received a UK job offer for a position on the Shortage Occupations List or for an occupation that lacks sufficient skilled workers in the domestic labor market.
- Intra-Company Transfer Visa – ITC: If you are currently working in the US and your organization has an office in the UK, this category may be suitable for you. Your employer must be willing to transfer you to the UK branch. You can apply for the ITC visa whether you are a new graduate trainee or a long-term staff.
- Sportsperson Visa: This category is for internationally acclaimed athletes and coaches whose roles are endorsed by the governing body of their sport.
- Minister of Religion Visa: This is designed for missionaries and religious workers coming to work within a faith-based community in the UK.
UK Family Visas for US Citizens
You may be eligible to move to the UK from the US through any of the following family visas:
- Adult Dependant Relative Visa: You can apply for this category if you are the parent, sibling, grandparent, or adult child of a British citizen or settled person. To be eligible, you must require long-term personal care as a result of illness, age, or disability.
- Child Dependant Visa: You can apply for this visa if you are a child of a British citizen or settled person and you’re under the age of 18.
- UK Ancestry Visa: You can apply for this if you are a Commonwealth citizen or one of your grandparents is a UK national. Many Americans hold British citizenship without realizing it. If you were born in the UK before 1983 or any of your parents were born in the UK, you may have British citizenship even if you have never applied for a British passport. British citizenship by birth is a little bit complex. So, if you think there is an ancestral link to Britain in your family line, you may need to speak with an immigration lawyer to have a clearer insight into this.
Partner Visas
If you are married to or in a civil relationship with a British citizen or settled person, you may move to the UK from the United States through any of the following routes:
- Spouse Visa: Also known as a partner visa, this is one of the fastest and easiest ways to move to the UK from the United States.
- Fiancé Visa: You can apply for this visa if you intend to join your partner in the UK and get married within six months after your arrival.
- Unmarried Partner Visa: This visa is for long-term civil partners of British citizens or settled persons who wish to join their partner in the UK. In some parts of the UK, this visa allows both same-sex and opposite-sex partners as long as you can demonstrate that your relationship is two years or longer. But in England and Wales, opposite-sex couples aren’t allowed to form a civil partner relationship.
UK Study Visas for US Citizens
You can also move to the UK from the US through a UK Student Visa. This is for those studying at higher levels of education. For younger children in secondary school or below, you can apply for a Child Student visa.
After your study, you can apply for the Graduate Immigration Route, which allows you to stay in the UK for 2 years or 3 years for Ph.D. students. After that, you can apply to permanently stay in the UK if you meet certain requirements.

Moving to the UK From USA: The Visa Application Process
Once you have identified a suitable immigration route, the next step is to check that you meet its requirements and prepare your application.
The process varies depending on the visa. In most cases, however, you will need to complete an application, provide documents showing that you meet the relevant requirements, and complete any required identity or biometric checks.
It is worth carefully checking the requirements for your particular route before submitting your application, as the required documents can vary considerably between visa categories.
1. Complete Application Form Online
You will start by filling the online application form and pay the required fees. While completing the form, be sure to provide accurate and honest information. The application process can take several months, depending on your case. So, it is important to apply as early as possible. The earliest you can apply is usually:
- 3 months before your employment start date if you are coming on a work visa
- 6 months before the start date for your course of study if coming on a student visa
2. Gather Your Supporting Documents
Document checklist for UK immigration depends on the visa category you are applying for. For instance, a family visa applicant will need documents to demonstrate a qualifying family relationship with the relative they are applying to join in the UK. If you are choosing a work visa route, you must demonstrate that you have the required credentials for the position. As an investment or startup visa applicant, proof of financial ability to invest in your choice of business will be required. In general, however, most individuals immigrating to the UK from the US will need to provide the following:
- Completed UK visa application form
- Valid passport
- Passport size photographs taken within the past six months
- Proof of payment of application fees
- Proof of means of subsistence
- Tuberculosis test results (if required)
- Biometric information
- Proof of accommodation in the UK
3. Book and Attend Biometric Appointment
Once you have completed your application, you will be prompted to book a biometric appointment at an Application Service Centre (ASC). At this appointment, you will have your fingerprints and photo taken. You can also have your biometric appointment at a VFS Premium Application Centre (PAC). If you choose a VFS PAC, you will have to purchase a Premium Service. Children under the age of 5 will not be asked to provide their fingerprints, but their photographs will be taken during the biometrics appointment. You must have the following with you when going for the appointment:
- A printout copy of your application form
- Your current passport
- A copy of your biometric confirmation receipt
4. After Your Application
Once your appointment confirmation letter is stamped at the ASC, you will have to post the following items within 5 days:
- Your current passport
- Your appointment form
- UPS return shipping label
Any supporting documents (if you have not uploaded them online).

eVisas: Proving Your UK Immigration Status
Physical Biometric Residence Permits have been replaced with a fully digital eVisa system. Most BRP cards now carry a printed expiry date of 31 December 2024, and by now, nearly everyone proves their status digitally instead.
An eVisa is simply an online record of your immigration status, tied to your passport and accessed through a free UKVI account.
It’s replacing BRP cards and passport vignette stickers, showing the same essentials: visa type, conditions, and when your permission ends.
Granted permission to live in the UK for more than 6 months? UKVI will likely have you set up a UKVI account rather than hand you a physical card.
From there, you can:
- Check your immigration status online whenever you need to
- Generate a time-limited share code, proof of your right to work, rent, or access services, for whoever needs to see it
- Keep your passport details current if you renew or replace it, since your eVisa is linked to whatever passport number is on file
Here’s the thing about that 31 December 2024 date printed on so many BRPs, it doesn’t mean your immigration status ended then, too. It just means the card itself is no longer valid proof; the eVisa and UKVI account are what matter now.
An expired BRP can still help set up that account for up to 18 months after expiry, but don’t rely on it for travel or right-to-work and right-to-rent checks.
New applications skip the physical card entirely these days. Get your visa granted, set up the UKVI account, and confirm your eVisa is accessible before you travel; that’s the whole process now.
Indefinite Leave to Remain After Moving to the UK From USA
After spending some time in the UK, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). How long you will stay before being eligible for ILR depends on the type of visa you hold. For most visa categories, it takes at least 5 years before getting ILR. In some cases, however, people may be eligible for it earlier.
Having ILR means you have been granted settlement or permanent residence in the UK and are no longer subject to any immigration-related restrictions. You will be free to live, study, work and travel abroad and reenter the UK without the need to apply for a visa. And after 1 year of holding ILR status in the UK, you can apply for British citizenship.
Lifestyle in the UK
Life in the UK varies enormously depending on where you settle. Major cities like London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol offer fast-paced, culturally diverse environments with strong job markets, while smaller towns and rural areas offer a quieter pace, more space, and often a lower cost of living.
Americans moving to the UK often find some adjustments take getting used to: driving on the left, the metric system alongside some imperial holdovers, and a more reserved everyday social style than many are used to.
Public transport is strong in cities, particularly London, making car ownership optional for many urban residents.
The UK’s culture places a high value on work-life balance relative to the US, with statutory minimum annual leave, and a strong pub, café, and community culture that shapes much of everyday social life.
The weather is an adjustment too, expect more cloud, rain, and mild but changeable conditions year-round rather than dramatic seasonal extremes.

The Immigration Health Surcharge, paid as part of most visa applications, gives access to NHS healthcare and should be factored into upfront moving costs rather than ongoing monthly expenses.
It’s worth researching costs in a specific target city or region before finalizing a move, since national averages can be misleading given the substantial regional variation.
Education in the UK
Families relocating with children have access to the UK’s state school system, which is free for children with an eligible immigration status, as well as a well-established private and international school sector.
State education runs from primary school (ages 4–11) through secondary school (11–16 or 18), with school places allocated based on catchment area, so choosing where to live can directly affect school options.
Places in popular schools and areas can be competitive, and it’s worth researching local school admissions well ahead of a move.
For higher education, the UK is home to a wide range of internationally recognized universities.
Americans moving as students should refer to the Student Visa route, while those relocating with university-age dependants should check individual university admissions requirements, since these are separate from immigration requirements.
Healthcare in the UK
The UK provides healthcare through the National Health Service (NHS), which offers free or low-cost care at the point of use to UK residents, funded through general taxation and the Immigration Health Surcharge paid by most visa applicants.
Once the Immigration Health Surcharge has been paid as part of a visa application, visa holders are entitled to use NHS services on broadly the same basis as a UK resident, including GP (family doctor) appointments, hospital treatment, and emergency care.
Registering with a local GP practice soon after arrival is one of the most useful early steps, as it is the main entry point to the wider NHS system.
Private healthcare is also widely available in the UK, offering faster access to some specialist treatments and a wider choice of providers. Some employers include private health insurance as part of a relocation or employment package.
