What is an Endorsement for a Global Talent Visa?

Before applying for the Global Talent Visa, most applicants must obtain an official endorsement from a government-approved endorsing body.

This endorsement is proof that you are an established leader (i.e., exceptional talent) or an emerging leader (i.e., exceptional promise) in your respective field.

The UK immigration and visa process for the Global Talent route is split into two stages: submitting an endorsement application to a competent endorsing body and then completing the visa application once endorsement is secured.

    Global Talent Visa Endorsement Requirements

The specific eligibility requirements regarding endorsement for the Global Talent visa depend on which professional sector you work in. You must apply for an endorsement from the body covering your field.

    Endorsement in Architecture

To qualify under architecture, applicants must demonstrate to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) that they have been regularly professionally engaged within the last five years and are internationally recognised as a leading talent, or show exceptional promise within the field.

Applicants must provide evidence of their architectural work and any international publications, awards, or recognition from reputable industry institutions.

    Endorsement in Arts and Culture

This route is managed by the Arts Council England and is designed for professionals in theatre, music, literature, combined arts, dance, and visual arts.

Applicants must prove that their work is internationally recognised, or have documented proof of significant professional achievements and critical acclaim in their specialist discipline.

    Endorsement in the Design Industry

Overseen by the Design Business Association (DBA) on behalf of Arts Council England, this endorsement route serves exceptional designers working across the product, graphic, brand, and interior design sectors.

Applicants must demonstrate commercial success, significant industry innovation, and leadership within their design community, supported by portfolios and any international media features.

    Endorsement in Film and Television

Endorsed by the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT) or other designated bodies, this pathway requires evidence of major contributions to cinema or televised products.

Only the exceptional talent route is available for film and television applicants; the exceptional promise tier is not offered under PACT’s remit. Securing endorsement often includes having credits on internationally acclaimed films or television programmes, or receiving industry awards such as BAFTAs or Academy Awards.

Endorsement in the Fashion Design Industry

The British Fashion Council assesses applicants under this category, who must show exceptional creative talent and commercial recognition within the global fashion industry. This is usually backed by press coverage, stockists, and receipt of prominent industry awards.

    Endorsement in Digital Technology

This endorsement pathway applies to technical and business applicants working in the tech sector.

Applicants must show innovation as a founder or employee of a product-led digital technology company, or otherwise demonstrate significant commercial and technical contributions to the modern digital ecosystem.

Endorsement in Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science, and Medical Fields

Pathways for applicants approaching one of the relevant endorsing bodies in these academic and research fields are structured to accommodate active researchers, whether applying via streamlined fast-track appointments or through independent peer review.

    Fast Track Endorsement

Certain applicants qualify for a streamlined, fast-track endorsement process. This typically applies to those moving to the UK with a prestigious fellowship, holding a top-tier academic or research portfolio, or acting as a crucial team member on an endorsed grant or major project approved by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

    Full Peer Review Endorsement

If your specialism does not fit into a fast-track category, your endorsement application undergoes a full peer review. Unlike fast-track routes (which verify specific pre-approved grants, prizes, or academic appointments), this approach involves the endorsing body sending your portfolio to independent experts in your field worldwide, who will evaluate your standing and achievements.

UK Global Talent Visa Endorsement Bodies

Endorsing bodies are appointed by the UK Home Office to evaluate whether applicants for Global Talent visas meet the high standards required.

The list of approved endorsing bodies for different industries and sectors includes:

    • Tech Nation: Digital technology professionals (technical and business skills)
    • Arts Council England: Arts, culture, architecture (via RIBA), film/television (via PACT), fashion (via the British Fashion Council), and the wider design industry (via the DBA)
    • The Royal Society: Natural and physical sciences
    • The Royal Academy of Engineering: Engineering applicants
    • The British Academy: Humanities and social sciences
    • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI): Scientific and research fields

Before You Apply for Global Talent Endorsement

Thorough preparation is key to ensuring your request for an endorsement is approved. You are advised to start the process in good time to avoid submitting a rushed or incomplete application.

Remember to factor in both the endorsement period and visa processing times when considering your relocation to the UK.

Take note of the criteria set out by the relevant endorsing body and submit paperwork that clearly evidences how you meet the requirements.

Applying as the Winner of an Eligible Prestigious Prize

If you are the recipient of a major international award for your discipline recognised by the Home Office, you do not need to apply for an endorsement, as the award is proof of your talent, making the process significantly quicker.

If applying by this route, you need the official certificate, diploma, or letter from the awarding institution confirming that you are indeed the named winner of the prestigious prize. Eligible prizes include:

    • The Nobel Prize
    • Academy Award
    • Bafta
    • Fields Medal

Specific internationally renowned arts and science prizes, as listed in Home Office guidance, also qualify.

      • The application fee is £205

How Long It Takes to Get an Endorsement for a Global Talent Visa

The processing time for a Global Talent visa endorsement varies depending on which route you take and the endorsing body.

Standard applications for endorsement take four to eight weeks to be processed. If you are applying via fast-track routes, then your application can usually be decided within two weeks.

Getting a Decision on Global Talent Visa Endorsement

Once the relevant endorsing body has made its decision, it will inform the Home Office and you will be contacted via email.

If endorsed, you can apply for the Global Talent visa. You can monitor the progress of your application through the updates provided in your online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account portal.

What Happens if an Endorsement Application is Refused?

If the endorsement is refused, you will be informed of why you failed to meet the required criteria.

You can challenge a rejected Global Talent endorsement by submitting a free Global Talent Endorsement Review Form via email to the Home Office within 28 days of the decision.

This review will not consider new evidence, so you may opt to submit a new application if you did not submit enough supporting documentation.

                Frequently Asked Questions

Endorsing bodies evaluate your career history to determine whether you are a recognised leader with ‘exceptional talent’ or a rising star with ‘exceptional promise’.

To make this assessment, they require proof of professional innovation, significant commercial or creative impact in your field, peer-reviewed recognition of your professional contributions, international media coverage of you and your work, and prominent awards you’ve received within your specific sector.

You may only submit one endorsement application at a time. If you work at a high level across multiple overlapping fields, such as design and digital technology, you should select the route that best suits you and where you can show your exceptional talent or promise; you cannot submit multiple parallel submissions.

When you successfully apply to an endorsing body and are granted endorsement, you have three months from the date on the endorsement letter to submit your actual Global Talent visa application. If you fail to do so you must reapply.

The exceptional talent route is designed for established leaders in their field who already have a proven, extensive track record of international recognition. But the UK government recognises that talented individuals may not have yet firmly established themselves professionally, but still have a great deal to offer.

The exceptional promise route is tailored for up-and-coming, younger, or early-career professionals who may not yet have years of senior achievement, but have shown the potential to become leaders.

Recommendation letters must be written by a recognised expert within the field you are applying who knows your work personally or professionally.

Letters must also be signed, dated, include the referee’s contact details and credentials, and specifically explain why, in their expert opinion, you meet the criteria for exceptional talent or promise. Depending on the specific endorsing body, there may also be strict formatting limits for the letters (e.g., a maximum of three sides of A4 per letter).

Yes, you don’t need to surrender your passport during the endorsement application phase, unlike during a visa application, when you must submit your passport to the Home Office for processing. Therefore, you can travel while the endorsing body reviews your application.

Global Talent endorsement opens up the door to potentially securing a UK Global Talent visa. Holders can work as employees, operate as self-employed, set up a business, or change jobs without needing employer sponsorship.

The Global Talent visa can also provide a direct pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain after three or five years of living and working in the UK, depending on whether you entered the UK under the exceptional talent or exceptional promise route.
