IAA Level 2 Course Overview
The IAA Level 2 course is designed to build on the knowledge gained at Level 1. It takes a more detailed look at UK immigration law, with a focus on the areas advisers are expected to understand when working at Level 2.
Across two days, participants will explore intermediate immigration law structures, casework principles, and the types of matters that sit beyond basic application advice. This includes asylum and humanitarian protection, EEA free movement law, business immigration, Points-Based System visas, detention, bail, and key immigration offences.
The course is intended to help participants prepare for the Level 2 competence assessment and improve their ability to deal with more complex immigration cases in practice.
What Is Included in the IAA Level 2 Syllabus?
The Level 2 syllabus introduces new learning objectives for immigration adviser applicants. The course covers:
- Intermediate structures, frameworks, and concepts of UK immigration law
- Humanitarian Protection and Asylum law
- European Economic Area free movement law
- Business immigration law
- Points-Based System visas
- Detention and bail
- Major immigration offences
- More complex immigration case analysis
- Practical preparation for the Level 2 competence assessment

Who Can Attend the IAA Level 2 Training Course?
The procedures and legal concepts covered at Level 2 follow directly from the topics introduced in Level 1.
For that reason, this course is best suited to participants who have already completed the IAA Level 1 assessment and are now preparing to progress to Level 2 authorisation.
It may also be useful for advisers or caseworkers who already work with immigration matters and want a clearer understanding of Level 2 casework expectations.

Requirements for Level 2 Accreditation
To become accredited at IAA Level 2, you must have:
- 12 months of relevant work experience, or the part-time equivalent, providing UK immigration advice and services
- Completed IAA Level 1 registration, unless applying in the Asylum and Protection category
- A completed IAA application with all required documents and checks
- A pass score on the Level 2 competence test
Will I Be a Regulated Immigration Adviser If I Complete the Course?
You do not “pass” the training course in the same way you pass an exam. The course is designed to prepare you for the official IAA Level 2 competence assessment.
To become a registered and regulated IAA Level 2 immigration adviser, you must pass the competence assessment and meet all other IAA requirements.
Training can improve your understanding, support your day-to-day casework, and help you prepare for the exam. However, you will still need IAA approval of your application and a pass score of 65% on the Level 2 competence assessment before you can practise as an accredited Level 2 adviser.
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is suitable for:
- Advisers moving from Level 1 to Level 2 authorisation
- Immigration caseworkers taking on more complex matters
- Caseworkers dealing with asylum or protection-related cases
- Organisations training staff to meet regulatory standards
- Legal professionals who want a clearer understanding of Level 2 immigration advice
- Advice sector workers preparing for more advanced immigration casework
What Can an IAA Level 2 Adviser Help With?
Level 2 authorisation allows advisers to work on more complex matters than Level 1. Depending on the adviser’s authorisation, this may include:
- Filing notices of appeal
- Preparing statements of additional grounds
- Advising on discretionary and complex applications
- Handling applications that are out of time or fall under concessionary policy
- Making requests for Administrative Review
- Preparing representations in cases involving illegal entry, overstaying, removal, or deportation
- Advising on Secretary of State bail
Level 2 does not include substantive tribunal appeal work. Tribunal representation sits within Level 3 authorisation.

Course Outcomes
By completing the IAA Level 2 Training Course, participants should develop stronger skills in:
- Analysing more complex immigration cases
- Understanding Level 2 legal frameworks and procedures
- Drafting clearer and more structured advice
- Preparing for scenario-based exam questions
- Working within the rules of the Level 2 open-book assessment
- Recognising when a case may need to be referred or escalated to Level 3
The Level 2 competence assessment lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes and is scenario-based. It is open-book within the rules set for the exam.
Opportunities After Level 2 Accreditation
Level 2 accreditation can support progression into immigration casework roles with greater responsibility. It allows advisers to work with more complex matters, including refusals, immigration breaches, asylum-related issues, and administrative reviews.
For many advisers, Level 2 is also the natural stepping stone toward IAA Level 3, where tribunal appeals and the most advanced categories of immigration advice are covered.
How does IAA Level 2 compare with other levels?
