About the Course

Working with vulnerable clients can be rewarding, but it can also be complex. Conversations may involve trauma, distress, anger, fear, confusion, or a client’s difficulty in explaining what has happened to them. Knowing how to respond calmly and appropriately makes a real difference.

This four-hour training course gives professionals the practical tools needed to support and advocate for vulnerable clients with greater confidence. It explores vulnerability, trauma, communication styles, emotional responses, and the challenges that can arise in advice-based work.

The course goes beyond theory. Participants will take part in skills practice and interactive activities designed to build a deeper understanding of trauma, trauma responses, and client behaviour. The session also looks at how to deliver difficult or disappointing news with sensitivity, how to manage emotional reactions such as anger or blame, and how to bring challenging conversations to a respectful close.

Although the course is particularly relevant to legal and immigration advice settings, it is open to individuals from other professional backgrounds who have an interest in supporting vulnerable people.

Joining instructions and links will be sent to the email address used during registration 24 hours before the course.

Why This Course Matters

When working with vulnerable clients, especially in immigration, legal, or advice settings, professionals need to understand both how to identify vulnerability and how to respond in a way that is safe, respectful, and effective.

This training can help participants understand their obligations under the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) and other professional codes relating to the identification and support of vulnerable clients.

It also addresses specific risks that vulnerable clients may face, including:

  • Trauma
  • Language barriers
  • Power imbalances
  • Exploitation
  • Fear or mistrust of authority
  • Difficulty giving instructions or explaining events clearly

The aim is to help professionals support clients without causing further harm, while also maintaining clear boundaries and protecting their own wellbeing.
