Different Routes To Immigrate To The UK From Bangladesh (Visas & Residencies)

Bangladeshi citizens who want to move to UK permanently have various visa options to choose from. It’s best to obtain a visa that aligns with your travel plans in the UK. Below are some of the visas that you can obtain to immigrate to the UK from Bangladesh:

      Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa is a visa designed for Bangladeshi citizens who wish to enter the UK and engage in paid activities they are eligible. It allows UK employers to sponsor non-UK qualified skilled workers to come and work for them in the United Kingdom.

Before you can apply for the Skilled Worker visa, you must have received a job offer and Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your prospective employer. This implies that your employer must sponsor your immigration from Bangladesh to the UK and that your employer must possess a sponsor licence.

With this visa, your dependents will be allowed to join you in the UK. When you have resided in the UK and have worked for your employer for up to 5 years, you can qualify to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Required Documents for Skilled Worker Visa

As a Bangladeshi citizen who wants to enter the UK and work for your employer, you must provide some documents when applying for a Skilled Worker visa. They include:

      • Your sponsor’s name and sponsorship licence number
      • Your expired travel documents or passports to prove your travel record
      • Other travel documents or current passports that show you can travel
      • Confirmation of job title
      • Job occupation code
      • The confirmation of your job’s annual salary
      • The reference number of your Certificate of Sponsorship issued to you by your sponsor

Besides the above-mentioned documents, you may be required to produce other supporting documents, such as:

      • A valid ATAS certificate, if required
      • Proof of your relationship with any dependent coming with you to the UK
      • Evidence of proficiency in the English language, if required
      • Your tuberculosis test result, if required
      • Evidence of having personal savings, if needed
      • Your ECCTIS reference number, or UK PhD certificate, if necessary
      • A criminal record certificate, received from your place of residence for the past 12 months or more within the last 10 years

      Fees

The cost of the visa application fee may be paid by the applicant and will vary based on several criteria, including the Immigration Health Surcharge and if the job is listed as a shortage occupation. Any dependents applying with the primary visa applicant must pay the same fees.

Below are the costs for a Skilled Worker visa:

      • If you are applying from outside the UK and you intend to remain for up to 3 years, you must pay £719 for each applicant. If you wish to remain for more than 3 years, you will pay £1,420 for each applicant.
      • If you are applying from within the UK and either extending, updating or switching your Skilled Worker visa to stay for up to 3 years. You are required to pay £827 for each applicant, and £1,500 for each applicant intending to remain for more than 3 years.
      • If the job is listed as a shortage occupation. While applying in the UK or outside the UK you are required to pay £551 for each applicant intending to stay in the UK for up to 3 years. You are required to pay £1,084 for each applicant wishing to remain in the UK for more than 3 years.

Additionally, you are required to have a minimum of £1,270 in your bank account to prove that you can cater for your needs while you are in the UK. You may also be required to pay a Healthcare Surcharge of £624 per year.

      Processing Time

It typically takes about 8 weeks to process your Skilled Worker visa application if you are applying from within the UK. But if you are applying from outside the UK, it might take only about 3 weeks to receive a decision on your application. However, it may be possible to expedite the processing time of your visa application by engaging the Priority Services of the Home Office.

      Innovator Visa

The Innovator visa is designed for experienced businesspeople and entrepreneurs who wish to create a business in the UK. Bangladeshi citizens are not required to meet any financial threshold to be allowed to invest in the business.

However, you are required to have a viable, scalable, and innovative business idea backed up by a comprehensive business plan and approved by a designated endorsing body. This endorsing body will continue to supervise the business according to what is stated in the business plan.

As a Bangladeshi citizen seeking an Innovator visa, you need to be the one who came up with the business idea or has made a major contribution to it. Your goal as an innovator must also be to play a significant role in the ongoing development and management of the company.

With the Innovator visa, your dependents will be allowed to join you in the UK. These dependents include your partner and children who are below 18 years old. After obtaining the Innovator visa, it will be valid for up to 3 years. When you have stayed in the UK for 3 years, you can qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

      Required Documents for Innovator Visa

To apply for an Innovator visa, as a Bangladeshi citizen, you must provide the following documents:

      • Your valid international passport or other documents which show your nationality and identity.
      • Evidence that you meet the English language proficiency test requirement.
      • Proof of your investment funds, if you will establish your new business in the UK.
      • A letter of endorsement to show that your business idea has been assessed by an authorised endorsing body.
      • Tuberculosis test, if it’s needed from your country.
      • Bank statement. You must have had a minimum of £1,270 in savings in your bank account for 28 days consecutively before applying for an Innovator visa.

      Fees

You must make some financial commitment to obtain an Innovator visa. The cost for an Innovator visa application is £1,191 for each applicant applying from outside the UK.

But if you want to apply to extend or switch an already existing visa, it will cost you about £1,486. You will also be required to pay the Healthcare Surcharge fee worth £624.

      Processing Time

After you have applied online, confirmed your identity, and uploaded your required documents, you should expect a decision from the Home Office after 3 weeks, if you are applying from outside the UK. However, if you are applying from within the UK, you should expect a decision after 8 weeks.

      Spouse Visa

The Spouse visa, otherwise known as the Partner visa allows foreign nationals to enter the UK and live with their British or settled spouse (typically a person who is residing in the UK indefinitely). The Spouse visa is under the Family visa category.

You will not be granted an automatic right to reside in the UK due to being married to a British citizen. That being said, you are required to obtain a Spouse visa to join your partner in the UK. You can qualify to apply for a Spouse or Partner visa, you must be married, unmarried, or in a civil partnership.

Bangladeshi citizens applying for a Spouse visa must meet some eligibility criteria. Upon the approval of your Spouse visa, you will be issued a visa valid for up to 2 years and 6 months.

When the validity period elapses, you will have the option to extend your stay in the UK. After residing in the UK for up to 5 years, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain which will allow you to reside in the UK without having to worry about immigration laws. You may be able to seek British citizenship through marriage after receiving Indefinite Leave to Remain.

You are required to provide certain documents when applying for a Spouse visa. The documents you must include in your application include the following. You must:

      • Provide your valid passport.
      • Get your previous passports.
      • Present your filled-out application form.
      • Present receipts of your paid application fee.

      • Show that you have a place to stay when you enter the UK.
      • Present your national insurance number, if you have any.
      • Show proof of having a subsisting and genuine relationship with your spouse. To prove this, you are required to present shared bills, correspondence, photographs, messages, etc.

      • Provide your biometric information such as a digital photograph and fingerprints.
      • Show that you meet the financial requirements, such as your savings statement, bank statements, payslips, etc.
      • Get a tuberculosis test result, if you are required to do so.

      Fees

You are required to pay certain fees to obtain a Spouse visa that will grant you entry into the UK to join your spouse. If you are applying from outside the UK, the Spouse visa application fee you may pay is worth £1,846.

But if you are paying for a Spouse visa application from within the UK, you are required to pay a fee of £1,048. These are the fees you must also pay for any other dependent who wants to come along with you on the visa.

That being said, you are also required to pay a Healthcare Surcharge fee worth £624 per year, including your biometric fee worth £19.20. If you want an expedited processing of your application, you can pay for the Home Office Super Priority Service worth £1,000 to get a decision on your application at the end of the next working day. But if you want to get a decision at the end of the next 5 working days, you can pay for Priority Service worth £500.

If you applied from outside the UK, it typically takes about 3 months (12 weeks) to get a decision on your Spouse visa application. Also, if you are already on a Spouse visa and you intend to extend or switch your visa, you should expect a decision from the Home Office within 8 weeks.

        Residency & Citizenship Routes

Bangladeshi citizens can qualify to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, otherwise known as Settlement visa or Permanent Residence when they have satisfied the stay period required for the visa type that allowed them into the UK.

For instance, if you are on Innovator visa, you must prove that you have resided in the UK for a consecutive 3 years, to qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain. Note that not all visas are eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

The Indefinite Leave to Remain grants you the right to live, study, work, and travel to and from the UK among other benefits without restrictions of the UK immigration law. You may apply for settlement if you share a home with a family member who is on Indefinite Leave to Remain or a British citizen. If your partner passes away or your relationship ended because of abuse, you might be qualified to file for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Bangladeshi citizens who have lived in the UK for 10 consecutive years can also be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain. It takes about 6 months to get a decision on your application for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

After obtaining your Indefinite Leave to Remain, if you stay outside of the UK for more than 180 days, your settlement status in the UK will be revoked.

        British Citizenship

The Indefinite Leave to Remain is the last step to obtaining the UK citizenship. Bangladeshi citizens who already have the settlement status in the UK can apply for British citizenship after staying in the UK for 1 year.

But if you are married to a British national, you can become eligible to apply for British citizenship after obtaining the Indefinite Leave to Remain.
