Global Talent Visa UK Eligibility Requirements 2026
Overview
When applying for the UK’s Global Talent visa, you will need to satisfy a number of eligibility requirements. Specifically, you will need to be at least 18 years old and to be a leader or potential leader in one of the following areas:
- Academia or research
- Arts and culture
- Digital technology
Leadership or potential leadership status is demonstrated either through winning an eligible prestigious award or successfully obtaining an endorsement. More details on both of these routes are given below.
If you are ineligible for both the endorsement and award route, you might instead be eligible for a Skilled Worker visa, provided that you have an eligible job offer from a licenced UK sponsor.
Prestigious Award
One route to obtaining a UK Global Talent visa is having won an eligible prestigious award in your particular field.
While a full list of eligible prizes can be found on the UK government website, the list includes awards like the Booker Prize, the Brit Awards International Artist of the Year, the Olivier Award Best Actor or Actress, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Turing Award, the BCS Lovelace Medal, and the Ken Kennedy Award.
Note that the award in question must be included in the list of eligible awards, not just awarded by one of the same institutions. Additionally, you must be named as the actual winner of the award. As such, the Home Office will initially try to verify that you received the award using publicly available information, such as the Award website.
Endorsement
If you haven’t won an eligible award but are still a leader or potential leader in your field then you will instead need to obtain an endorsement in order to apply for the UK Global Talent visa. You will need to apply to the UK Home Office, which will then refer your application to a relevant UK organisation which has expertise in your particular field.
Note that the exact endorsement requirements vary significantly depending on your particular field. If you are applying on the basis of leadership or potential leadership in fashion design, for example, you will need to demonstrate that your work is sold or exhibited internationally and is already recognised by leading fashion industry figures.
Who can apply for the UK Global Talent Visa?
In order to apply for a UK Global Talent visa, you must be at least 18 years old and a leader or potential leader in one of the following:
- academia or research
- arts and culture
- digital technology
You will need to provide evidence that you are sufficiently established in your field to qualify as either a leader or potential leader.
In the event that you do not qualify for a Global Talent visa but you have a job offer from a UK company which is a licenced sponsor, you may instead be able to apply for a different Work visa, such as a Skilled Worker visa.
Qualifying Dependants for the Global Talent Visa UK
If you are eligible for a UK Global Talent visa then your partner and child(ren) may also be able to join you in the UK as dependants. In order to be eligible, they will need to fall into one of the following categories:
- Spouse or unmarried partner
- In the event that you and your partner are not married, you must either have been in a relationship and living together for at least 2 years or, if living together was not possible during that time (due to cultural considerations or long distance, for example) you will need to provide evidence that you were together in a committed relationship for the preceding 2-year period (through providing evidence of ongoing communication, shared finances, joint care of shared children, and time spent at events or on holidays as a couple, for example)
- Minor children (i.e. children who are under 18)
- Adult children who currently have either leave to enter or leave to remain in the UK
Note that, in order to be eligible, your child will currently need to live with you (unless living away from home in full-time education) and must not be married.
Additionally, each member of your family who is applying to join you will need to complete their own visa application and pay their own application fee.
Documents Required for the UK Global Talent Visa
When applying for the Global Talent visa, there are a number of documents which you will need to submit in support of your application, including the following:
- Valid passport
- Negative Tuberculosis test results if you are from one of the countries where the test is required (this list can be found on the UK government website, although note that the US is not included on the list)
- Endorsement (obtained via the Home Office), if applicable
If you are applying for the visa on the basis of having won an eligible prestigious prize, the Home Office will first try to verify that you won the prize using publicly available information (such as the website of the awarding body). In the event that they are not able to do so, they will then ask you to provide evidence that you won the prize.
Note that documents must be provided in English or Welsh. If you need to get your documents translated, you must make sure to provide a certified translation.
UK Global Talent Visa Application Process
The application process when applying for a Global Talent visa will depend on whether or not you have won a prestigious award. If you have won an eligible prestigious award then you can apply directly for a Global Talent visa, via the UK government website.
If you have not won an eligible prestigious award but are still a leader or potential leader in your field then you will first need to apply for an endorsement. If you successfully receive an endorsement, you can then submit your online application for the Global Talent visa.
When submitting your application, you will need to provide a range of supporting documents, as listed in this article. You will also be asked to verify your identity in one of the following two ways:
- Via the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app, which will scan your identity documents
- Via a UK visa application centre, where your biometric information (photograph and fingerprints) will be taken. In the US, these can be found in multiple locations, including San Francisco, Miami, Washington DC, Las Vegas, New York, Nashville, Dallas, Seattle, New Orleans, Chicago, and Salt Lake City
Once you have completed the necessary steps, your application will now be processed. If your application is successful, you will receive a visa which can be used to enter the UK. If your application is unsuccessful, you can request a review of the decision.
UK Global Talent Visa Processing Timeline
If you have applied for the Global Talent visa from inside the UK (i.e. if you are applying to switch from a different UK visa), you should receive a decision on your application within 8 weeks. If you are applying from outside of the UK, on the other hand, you should hear back within 3 weeks.
In order to minimise delays, you should make sure to submit all of the required information and to promptly respond to any requests for further evidence (if the Home Office is unable to verify your prestigious award win using publicly available information, for example).
How much is the Global Talent Visa application fee?
The process when paying for a Global Talent visa depends on whether or not you require an endorsement.
In the event that you do not require an endorsement, you will pay a single fee of £766 at the time of application.
In the event that you do require an endorsement, you will pay an initial fee of £561 when you apply for an endorsement and then a second fee of £205 when you submit the visa application itself.
Any dependants who are joining you as your dependants will also need to pay an application fee of £766 when submitting their own applications.
Additionally, you (and any dependants) will also need to pay the NHS healthcare surcharge, which is usually £1035 per year. This allows you to access the UK’s National Health Service and to receive medical treatment.
How long is the UK Global Talent Visa valid for?
The Global Talent visa is generally granted for an initial period of up to 5 years. Once it expires, you will be able to apply for an extension (provided that you continue to satisfy the eligibility criteria), although you may also be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain once you have been living continuously in the UK for 3-5 years.
Applying for indefinite leave to remain means that you will not need to continue maintaining valid visa status.
Further details on the exact timeline for getting indefinite leave to remain when on a Global Talent visa are given later in this article.
Switch to a Global Talent Visa in UK
In some cases, you may be able to switch to a Global Talent visa from a different UK visa. In this case, you will need to already be in the UK.
When applying to switch to a Global Talent visa from within the UK, you will need to satisfy the usual Global Talent visa eligibility criteria. Additionally, you will not be eligible to switch to a Global Talent visa if you are in the UK on any of the following visas:
- Visitor visa
- Short-Term Student visa
- Parent of a Child Student visa
- Seasonal Worker visa
- Domestic Worker in a Private Household visa
You will also not be able to apply to switch if you are on immigration bail or were given permission to stay on compassionate grounds.
If any of the above apply to you, you will need to first leave the UK and then apply for a Global Talent visa from outside of the UK.
If you have dependants in the UK on an eligible visa type, they may also be able to apply to switch to dependants under your Global Talent visa. However, if they are not in the UK on a valid visa (if they are currently in the UK as visitors, for example), then they will need to first leave the UK and then apply for a new visa from their country of residence.
When can you apply for permanent residency in the UK as a Global Talent Visa holder?
After 5 years of living in the UK with a Global Talent visa, you will generally be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain.
You may also be eligible to apply after 3 years, in the following circumstances:
- You applied on the basis of a prestigious award rather than an endorsement
- You were endorsed by the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society, or UK Research and Innovation
- You were endorsed by either the Arts Council England or Tech Nation as an exceptional talent
In order to apply for permanent settlement status, known in the UK as ‘indefinite leave to remain’, you will need to satisfy a range of eligibility criteria, including the following:
- Satisfy the English language requirements
- Demonstrate that you have the financial means to support yourself (and any dependants)
- In most cases, have passed the Life in the UK test
- Have lived continuously in the UK during the last 3 or 5 years
- Pay the application fee, which is generally £3,226
British citizenship for Global Talent Visa holders
Once you have had indefinite leave to remain in the UK for at least 12 months, you will generally be able to apply for British citizenship.
This brings a number of appealing benefits, including the ability to participate in UK elections and to apply for a British passport.
In order to apply for citizenship, you will need to satisfy a number of eligibility criteria, including sufficient English language skills, demonstrating that you are of good character, and intending to continue living in the UK upon obtaining British citizenship.
You will also need to pay the application fee, which is generally £1,709.
If your endorsement application is refused
In the event that your endorsement application is refused, you can request a review. You will have 28 days in which to do so after receiving the initial decision. The review will be conducted by the same endorsing body that initially considered your application.
In order to receive a review, you will need to be able to demonstrate that either a piece of the evidence you provided was not properly considered or that your application was processed incorrectly.
If you cannot demonstrate either then your review request will likely be denied.
Upon submitting your review request to the Home Office, you should receive a decision within 28 days.
In the event that the refusal is upheld, you will be able to submit a new application. However, you will need to re-pay the application fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Global Talent visa has very specific eligibility criteria and is only intended for individuals who are at the top of their field.
As such, you will only be eligible if you can demonstrate that you are either a leader or potential leader in the field in question. In this sense, the Global Talent visa is perhaps one of the more difficult UK visas to obtain, as being an overall strong performer in the field in question is not sufficient.
However, even if you are not eligible for the Global Talent visa, you may still be eligible for another UK Work visa, such as the Skilled Worker visa. Contact Total Law to learn more.
The Global Talent visa is a strong visa choice insofar as it provides a direct route to UK permanent settlement and citizenship, and allows certain eligible holders to apply for permanent settlement after 3 years, rather than the usual 5.
If you have either won an eligible prestigious award or are well-established as a leader or potential leader in your field, the Global Talent visa may be a good fit for you.
Yes, Global Talent visa holders can bring their immediate families to the UK as their dependants. This generally refers to their spouse/partner and any minor children.
However, note that each dependant will need to submit their own visa application and will need to pay a separate application fee.
