    Visas That Allow You to Work in New Zealand

    Accredited Employer Work Visa

    The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) allows you to come to New Zealand to take up a full-time job that is:

    • For at least 30 hours a week
    • From an employer accredited to hire migrants under this visa route and has an approved job check for your role.

    To apply for this visa, you must already have an existing job offer and provide evidence of such with a copy of your employment agreement and job description and a signed copy of the job offer. You must also prove that you have the skills and experience for the job as listed in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).

    Furthermore, your employer must prove that you got the job offer because no New Zealander could take it up.

    With the AEWV, you can live in New Zealand for up to 5 years if you earn at least NZD $29.66 an hour. You can also study for up to 3 months within any 12-month period.

    Specific Purpose Work Visa

    This visa allows you to come to New Zealand for a specific work purpose or event. Your work purpose may include any of the following:

    • As a senior or specialist business person coming to New Zealand for secondment reasons
    • As a principal applicant investigating investment opportunities and making direct investments in New Zealand
    • As a referee or a judge for a sports event
    • As an installer or servicer of specialised machinery
    • Any other specific work purpose or events that benefit New Zealand

    To be eligible for this visa, you must meet the following requirements:

    • Prove your intention to return home at the end of your event.

      Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

      If you intend to live permanently in New Zealand and you have skills and qualifications that will be beneficial to the country’s economic growth, you can apply for the Skilled Migrant category Resident Visa.

      With this visa, you can live, work, study, and bring your partner and children under 24 to join you in New Zealand.

      To be eligible for this visa, you must meet the following requirements:

      • Be 55 years or younger
      • Be fluent in the English language
      • Have a full-time job offer from an accredited employer
      • Have a Bachelor’s degree or higher
      • Earn at least 1.5 times the median wage in New Zealand
      • Earn at least 6 points for your skills and work in New Zealand

      Note that applications for this visa are open at specific times during the year. Before you can apply, you must first submit an expression of interest (EOI) to the immigration authorities. If your EOI is approved, you will be invited to apply.

      Talent Work Visa

      If you have exceptional talent in a field of art, culture or sport, you can apply to live and work in New Zealand either temporarily or permanently with a Talent Work Visa.

      To be eligible for the Talent Work Visa, you should meet the following requirements:

      • Be 55 years or younger
      • Have an international reputation and record of excellence in your field
      • Be supported by a nationally recognised New Zealand organisation
      • Have an acceptable sponsor to provide you with accommodation and financial support in New Zealand.

      This visa is typically valid for 30 months. If you still meet the visa’s conditions, you can apply for a residence permit to live in New Zealand indefinitely. With a residence permit, you can bring your dependents to join you.

      Straight to Residence Visa

      You can apply for a Straight to Residence Visa if you have been hired by an accredited employer for a job role on Tier 1 of the Green List for roles in demand in New Zealand.

      You must meet the skills and qualification requirement, the median wage threshold, and professional membership criteria for your job as specified in the Green List. Also, your employment must be:

      • Full-time and
      • Either permanent or fixed term for at least 12 months or a contract or contracts for at least 6 months or more.

      Your stay on this visa is indefinite as it is a residence visa. You will also be able to bring your dependents with you.

      Business Visitor Visa

      The Business Visitor Visa allows you to visit New Zealand for not more than 3 months in one year to conduct business or work-related activities. These activities can include buying and selling goods or services, attending business negotiation meetings, and participating in official trade missions.

      To be eligible for this visa, you must:

      • Provide a letter from your employer or the company you’ll be doing business with confirming the reason for your visit.
      • Intend to leave New Zealand at the end of your business activity

        Indonesia Special Work Visa

        As an Indonesian citizen, you can work in New Zealand for up to 4 years under this special work visa route. However, your job role is limited to three options: as a chef, a Halal slaughterer or a Bahasa teacher’s aide.

        To be eligible for this visa, you must meet these requirements:

        • Have a full-time job offer at ANZSCO Skill Level 3 or Level 4.
        • Prove that you are an Indonesian citizen and you live there permanently
        • Have the qualifications or practical work experience related to your work

        When your visa expires, you must spend 3 years outside New Zealand before you can be eligible again for the visa.

        It’s important to note that this visa has a limited number of slots. At any one time, New Zealand can only have 100 Indonesian chefs, 20 Halal slaughterers, and 20 Bahasa teachers’ aides. As such, when the slots are filled, visa applications will close.
