Au Pair Requirements To Work In France

Individuals who are going to be hosted in France by a family that is not their own to be an au pair for over three months can apply for a visa. This visa is available for young people and is intended for the primary purpose of learning French.

Au Pairs can work in France to earn ‘pocket money’. According to French regulations for Au Pairs from non-EU countries, these individuals are entitled to earn at least €320 in pocket money per month. Meanwhile, EU Au Pairs can receive between €307.50 and €369 per month. However, the exact amount must be specified in the Au Pair contract.

The requirements for Au Pairs that these individuals must meet to be able to apply include the following:

    • The applicant must be between 18 and 30 years of age, or 17 years old for EU citizens.
    • The applicant must not be married and must have no children.
    • The applicant must have a nationality other than French.
    • The applicant has at least a basic knowledge of the French language.
    • The applicant is studying in their home country, or they have a school leaving certificate that enables them to study. However, there is no restriction on this for EU or EFTA citizens.
    • The applicant must be willing to go to France for a minimum of 3 months.
    • The applicant must be able to afford the trip to France.
    • The applicant is willing to attend a course in the French language during their stay; this is compulsory.

      Required Documents

Applicants for the Au Pair visa will need to supply certain documents as part of their application. This includes:

      • The applicant will need to provide their passport and a copy of their passport.
      • The applicant should have a signed contract with the French host family. Both parties should check that it explains points such as pocket money, working hours, free time, and insurance. This must also be approved by DREETS.
      • The applicant will need to complete the application form provided to them by the French Embassy.
      • The applicant must have a clear criminal record and will need to present proof of this.
      • The applicant will need to present a school diploma or the equivalent to prove educational status.
      • Those applying from non-European Union countries need to have private health insurance that is valid in France. The host family will typically cover these costs, and the applicant should make insurance arrangements with them.
      • The applicant should have a motivation letter that answers why they wish to learn French.
      • The applicant will need to confirm their enrollment in a French language course for a minimum of 3 months.

Employer Requirements For Hiring An Au Pair Coming To France For Work

The host family of the Au Pair individual in France will also need to fulfil specific requirements alongside the applicant; these include the following:

      • There must be at least one or more children of at least 3 years of age, but no older than 18, living in the host family household.
      • The Au Pair will have their room while they stay with the host family.
      • The tasks of the Au Pair should be light housework and caring for the host family’s children.
      • The host family must speak French in their daily lives.
      • The host family must be willing to host the Au Pair for a minimum of 3 months.
      • The host family must be willing to allow the Au Pair enough time to attend a language course.

      Other Requirements

The Au Pair and the host family must recognise that there are two different types of Au Pair programmes in France. There is the Stagiaire aide familial étranger and the Salarie Au Pair. The Au Pair programme typically refers to the Stagiaire Aide Familial Etranger programme.

It is also important to note that the host family needs to register their Au pair at the foreign office to obtain a residence permit as quickly as possible to do so. It will also be necessary for the host family to register the Au Pair with Social Security as well.

As the visa is not considered to be a work permit, the participant will not be allowed to work outside of the family.

In some cases, but not all, it may be possible that the participant will need to prove that they can cover the travel and visa expenses.

Once the appointment has been conducted, the Au Pair may need to wait a couple of weeks for approval for this visa type.

How To Bring Au Pairs To Work In France

The process for bringing Au Pairs into France depends on whether they are from the EU or not.

      EU Citizens Au Pairs

      1. EU citizens with a valid passport or ID card will find this is enough to travel to France as an Au Pair.
      2. The Au Pair and the host families need to sign 2 copies of the contract and send them to one another. Both copies should have a finalised and signed contract with them before the stay can begin.
      3. After the Au Pair arrives, the host family will need to register the Au Pair in the first 8 days at the URSSAF as a Stagiaire Aide Familial Etranger. The Au Pair will be registered with public health insurance and will get a social insurance number.

      Non-EU Citizen Au Pair

      1. If the applicant doesn’t have a passport, they will need to obtain one. The passport must be valid for the entire duration of their intended stay in France.
      2. To enter the country as an Au Pair, the applicant will need a long-sejour VLS-TS visa; this type of visa will make Au Pair travel possible. The applicant will need to contact the French Embassy in their home country for more detailed information about the necessary documents, including the contract signed by both the applicant and the host family.
      3. In France, the Au Pair must validate the visa online and declare themselves to the OFII; this must be done within 3 months of arriving in France without fail.
      4. Within 8 days of the applicant’s arrival, the host family will need to register the Au Pair with their local URSSAF as a stagiaire aide familial étranger. The host family must register the Au Pair with the insurance institution Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie for cover in the case of maternity or illness.
