What Is The UK Youth Mobility Visa And Who Is It For?

Young people aged 18 to 35 from eligible countries can apply to work, study and live in the UK for up to 2 years.

One of the most attractive features of the visa is that you do not need a sponsor or job to apply. Unlike the Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas, you do not need to meet minimum salary or skill requirements.

The UK government has made a few changes to the Youth Mobility Scheme. Young adults from New Zealand, Canada, South Korea and Australia can apply for the visa even if they are 35.

Visa holders from the countries above can extend their stay by 1 year after their visa expires.

How To Apply For The UK Youth Mobility Visa

Here is how to apply for a UK Youth Mobility Visa:

For Applicants from Hong Kong and Taiwan

You will need to go through your country’s ballot system. The ballots open in January and July; each opening lasts 48 hours. When the ballot opens, you must send an email to an address your country will provide.

Your email must be in English; you can only send this email once. The subject of your email must show your name (last name and first name only), date of birth and passport number. This will also be repeated in the body of the email, but this time, you’ll include your mobile number.

After sending your entry, you will receive a confirmation email. If you are successful, you will get an email by January 28.

You can then proceed to steps below. You have only 30 days to make your visa application. If you did not get any email after 2 weeks of ballot closure, you’ll have to reapply when the ballot opens again in July.

Alternative Visa Routes for Citizens of Egypt

If you are a citizen of Egypt, you are not eligible for the UK Youth Mobility visa. However, below are some alternatives to consider.

        Global Talent Visa

If you are an Egyptian leader, potential leader or promising talent in the arts, science, academia, research or technology, you are eligible to apply for a Global Talent visa. With this visa, you can work, live or start a business in the UK.

Like the Youth Mobility visa, you don’t need a sponsor or a job offer to apply. You also do not need to meet any salary requirement or prove that you understand the English language. There is also no limit on the kind of work you can do on the visa as long as the work is in your designated field.

Unlike the Youth Mobility visa, the Global Talent visa is a route to settling permanently in the UK. If you are a talent or leader in your field, you can settle in the UK after 3 years. If you are a promising talent or potential leader, you can settle after 5 years. You are also permitted to move to the UK with your dependents.

        Eligibility Requirement

Egyptains looking to move to the UK via the Global Talent visa route must meet certain requirements:

        • You must be at least 18.
        • You must be endoresed by the endorsing bodies approved by the Home Office. These bodies are the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society, the UK Research and Innovation, the British Academy and the Arts Council England.
        • You must have won a prestigious award to apply, if you do not have any endorsement. Some of these awards are the Booker Prizes, the Academy Awards, the Nobel Prizes, the OScar Awards, Golden Globe Awards, BAFTA Awards etc. You can find the full list of the eligible awards here.
        • You must prove that you have contributed or have the potential to contribute to the field you want to work in when you arrive in the UK.

        Fees

        • £524 for the endorsement by eligible bodies.
        • £192 for the Global Talent visa.

If you have won a prestigious award, you need no endorsement so you’ll pay £716 when applying for the visa.

It takes the Home Office 3 weeks to process your application.

        High Potential Individual Visa

Egyptians can apply for the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa and work, live or study in the UK for 2 to 3 years. To get this visa, you must prove that you have graduated from an eligible universtity within the last 5 years.

If you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree, you can stay for 2 years. If you have a doctorate degree, you can stay for 3 years.

You cannot extend or renew the HPI visa and it is not a route to permanent residence. However, it is possible for you to switch to another visa. Like the Youth mobility visa, you cannot work as an international sportsperson or get public funds with this visa.

You can however, travel to the UK with dependents, leave and re-enter the UK at will and be self-employed.
