An Overview Of The UK Ancestry Visa

UK Ancestry Visas allow Commonwealth citizens with at least one grandparent or parent born in the UK to come here. Whilst here you have the freedom to live, work, and study for up to five years.

They can bring with them their spouse and any dependent children with, who also enjoy the same benefits as the visa holder.

After 5-years, you can apply for either a visa extension or indefinite leave to remain (ILR). If all goes well, it could lead to you becoming a British citizen.

The visa applicant must be able to financially support themselves and any dependents they bring with them without relying on funds from the UK government.

Applicants may also need to meet the English language skills requirements and have settled accommodation.

      Benefits and Limitations

One advantage of the UK Ancestry Visa is its flexibility; it lets you take up any employment in the UK without requiring sponsorship from an employer.

You are able to access the National Health Service (NHS) while studying or working in Britain. If granted settlement status, you may get access to the same benefits as UK citizens.

While the visa offers many benefits, there are some limitations that you must consider before applying. These include:

      • It does not lead directly to becoming a British citizen
      • If you lose a job, you must return to Egypt to apply for a new visa
      • You are not allowed to switch to another visa from within the UK. You must return to Egypt to apply for a different type of visa

Like with all UK visa requirements, it is vital that you comply with the conditions of the visa during your stay. If you breach them, it could lead to your visa being revoked, at which point you may be deported.

Duration Of Stay On The UK Ancestry Visa

UK Ancestry Visas are granted for up to 30 months (2.5 years). Unlike other types of visas, it is a single entry visa, this means you can only enter the UK once during this time.

You cannot apply for this visa from within the UK, you must apply and submit an application from within Egypt. For the visa to continue to be valid, you must maintain your relationship with your grandparents and not try to access any benefits without first obtaining settlement status.

        Extending The Visa

You can extend your UK Ancestry Visa by applying for a further 30 months.

To do so you must continue to meet all the original eligibility requirements, including maintaining a good relationship with your grandparent or parent and demonstrate you have the financial means to support yourself while in the UK.

        You must also:

        • Submit a new application online, provide any updated documents and pay the fees.
        • Apply for the extension at least 28 days before your current visa expires to avoid overstaying and potential complications, which could lead to fines or deportation.

It is also worth noting, the visa can be extended, but only once for a total maximum stay of 60 months (5 years). After completing 5 years on the Ancestry Visa you will be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK (settlement), leading to permanent UK residency.
