Germany Business Visa
Germany has many visa and permit options for foreign nationals wishing to conduct or start a business in Germany. The type of process US citizens must follow depends on the purpose of their business-related visit to Germany and how long you wish to stay in the country.
Please note that business visas and permissions for Germany and the wider Schengen Area can be complicated to understand, as it can be unclear whether you qualify as a tourist or as a business, and further complications could arise if you wish to reside in Germany or have previous criminal records. What is a Germany Business Visa?
There are two types of business visa options for Germany, depending on the purpose of your visit and how long you need to stay in Germany.
Short Stay Shengen Visa
A business visa for Germany is also known as a Short-Stay Schengen visa. Foreign nationals wishing to visit Germany for a short period of time for tourism or business purposes are required to apply for the Short-Stay Shengen visa. This is the only short-term business visa option available for Germany.
As of January 2024, the United States of America is one of the 62 nations that is listed under the German visa-waiver program. This means that if you are a US passport holder and would like to visit Germany for business-related purposes for a short-term period, you should not be required to apply for a German visa.
Generally, a Shengen visa for Germany allows you to enter the country to visit and stay for up to 90 days within a 6 month period. The same rules apply for US citizens and other nations eligible for the visa-waiver program.
The Schengen visa allows you to organise and attend meetings, sign contracts, and conduct other duties that are in line with your business needs to run or expand your business in Germany. You are not permitted to work or earn an income in Germany during this time.
This visa does not allow you to live in Germany permanently or start a business in Germany. If you wish to start or expand your business in Germany, you will require a D-Visa or ‘National Visa’ for self-employed entrepreneurs.

New Requirements from May 2025 – Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
ETIAS is a screening program that is currently being developed by the European Commission that will be essential for all visa-exempt visitors to complete before travelling to the European Union and Schengen area. ETIAS is scheduled to begin in May 2025.
ETIAS will allow EU states to improve screenings of people travelling to European countries and tighten its border controls so that any suspicious individuals or people entering states illegally are easier to recognise before they enter the territory, and to reduce the number of people overstaying their visas and working illegally in the EU.
Germany National Visa – Visa For Self Employment
US nationals are required to apply for a long stay national visa and residence permit if they intend to spend more than 90 days in Germany for tourism, business or work-related purposes. If you wish to start a business in Germany, you will be required to apply for this visa.
Usually, the long stay visa and permit is issued for a 1 year duration, and a residence permit should be applied for in Germany at the local US immigration office or embassy, once the visa holder has entered Germany and began their visa stay.

Do I Need a Germany Business Visa from the USA?
US citizens do not need to apply for a short-stay Schengen business visa, as currently the USA is one of a list of 62 nations allowed to enter Germany through its visa-waiver program. This means that you can spend up to 90 days within a 6 month period in the country without needing to apply for an official business visa.
If you wish to work and start a business in Germany through the Self-Employment visa, you will be required to meet the following criteria before applying:
- Provide proof that you have the financial means to support your business idea
- Provide proof that your business is viable and necessary for the local or national German economy
- Provide evidence for how your business will positively contribute to Germany
- Provide evidence of your retirement savings if you are above 45 years old
Ensuring you have an adequate business strategy for a business visa for Germany can be a complicated process, and you may be unsure whether or not this is the right visa route for you. What Documents Do I Need to Apply for a Business Visa to Germany?
Documentation requirements vary according to which process you are required to take in order to enter Germany. Luckily, assuming you do not have a complicated case, the application process and required documentation is relatively simple for spending time in Germany for business purposes.
Short Stay Application
Currently, US citizens don’t require anything other than a valid passport to enter Germany for short-term business purposes. However, from May 2025, you will be required to submit documents to the ETIAS.
To apply for ETIAS, you will not need a huge amount of documentation to receive approval to enter Germany. What you will require is as follows:
- A passport that is machine-readable and is valid and in-date for the duration of your stay and beyond your departure date
- Basic personal details such as your full name, date and place of birth, sex, email address, and phone number
- Details about your parents
- Details about your education and employment history
- Details about previous trips to Germany and/or Europe
- Any medical conditions you had or have
- Proof of any previous drug use or related convictions
- Your criminal history
- Other relevant security information
Self-Employed Entrepreneur Visa Documents
In order to apply for a self-employed visa (Type D National Visa), you will require the following documents for the visa application:
- A valid US passport
- Recent biometric passport photos
- Your business plan documents
- Documents proving you have the appropriate finances to fund your business or yourself, such as recent bank statements, or a ‘Declaration of Commitment’ from a family member, acquaintance or business in Germany that confirms their willingness to support your business financially
- If you plan to work as a contractor for a German company, you will need proof of contract agreement and a work permit for the job you wish to pursue, including any documents proving your qualifications
Once you have obtained the Type D visa, you must then apply for a German residence permit. The documents required are as follows:
- Your passport with validity for at least the duration of your stay in Germany
- A complete residence permit application form
- Your business plan or plan for obtaining self-employed work
- Health insurance documentation
It will also likely help your application if you can submit one or both of the following:
- References from previous employers
- Proof of previous entrepreneurial experience
Depending on your particular circumstances, you may also need to submit one or more of the following:
- Your current employment contract (for academics and researchers)
- Degree certificate(s), especially if you graduated from a German university
- Proof of your pension income (for those aged 45 and above).
How to Apply for a German Business Visa from USA
As of January 2024, you will not need to follow any application process to enter Germany if you are visiting for less than 90 days within a 6 month period. You will only require your passport for all border controls. From May 2025, you will be required to submit your information for ETIAS.
However, the German government along with the European Commission will require nationals of countries who are eligible for the visa-waiver program to obtain an Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) from May 2025 in order to enter the Schengen Area.
For US citizens wishing to travel to Germany to start a business or work as a self-employed person, you must apply for the Type D National Visa. You can obtain the visa application form and apply for this at your local German embassy or German consulate in the US or in the country you are residing in. US nationals, amongst a select number of other nations, are also about to apply for the long-stay visa once they have already arrived in Germany. The application form will be available to obtain at your local immigration office in Germany.
- Long-stay visa holders will be required to apply for a residence permit once you are in Germany. You can do this at your local Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) and must do so within 90 days of arriving in the country. You must be registered with the Meldebehörde (local German authorities) within a 2 week period of entering Germany on a long-term visa.
How Much is the German Business Visa?
If you are travelling to Germany for a short period, you do not need to apply for a visa and therefore no Germany business visa fee payment is required. From May 2025, it will cost €7 to apply for the ETIAS system.
If you are applying for the Type D National Germany Business Visa, the application fee is non-refundable and will cost €75. This does not include any additional costs that may be involved, such as printing or travel costs.
How Long Does the Application Process Take?
There is no wait time involved if you plan to travel to Germany for business purposes for less than 90 days.
If you are applying for the Type D National Germany Business visa, you should expect the process to take around 3 months, though this could take longer if your circumstances are complex or if the Federal Employment Agency has to approve the application.
