Germany Visa Requirements

Although the US is one of many countries in the world that has a visa liberalization agreement with Germany, there are still some cases where a visa may be necessary to be able to enter the country.

Back in 2022, there were 13,487 applications for German Schengen visas from the US. This is why US citizens must be familiar with the requirements for a German visa.

There are many types of German visas, such as:

• Visas for cultural, religious, or sports events

• Trade fairs and exhibition visas

US citizens do not necessarily need to have a visa to enter Germany if they are staying in the country for 90 days in any 180 days. However, visa-free stays are limited to 90 days; after this, a residence permit or visa must be obtained.

This being said, in some specific cases, US citizens may be required to have a visa. These circumstances include the following:

• The applicant was previously refused entry into the Schengen Area
• The applicant is not a US citizen or a permanent resident of the US, and they need a visa to enter the Schengen area

It is also worth being aware that while US citizens do not currently require a visa, from May 2025, ETAS will be launched, and US nationals will need to register for ETIAS before they enter any country in the Schengen Area.

There are also certain situations in which an applicant should apply for a German Visa from the US. An applicant should only apply for a German Schengen Visa in the US in the following situations:

• They only intend on visiting Germany. This means that if the applicant wishes to visit another Schengen country, this is not the relevant visa
• The applicant will be spending the majority of their time in Germany. If the applicant is doing a tour around Schengen countries, they should apply for a visa in the country where they will be spending most of their time.

Every different visa type will come with specific requirements; however, some requirements apply to all visas. Applicants must prepare two sets of documents required to apply for their Germany visa application. These required documents include the following:

• In an application form, applicants must provide a filled-out and signed application form for the visa that they are applying for. This form will be downloadable online from the German Embassy website. The form should be printed and filled out.
• A declaration of the accuracy of information. This needs to be signed and submitted alongside the rest of the applicant’s documents.
• The applicant’s passport. This must be a valid passport that is valid for at least an additional three months after the date the applicant plans to leave Germany, and it must also have been issued in the last decade and contain two blank pages.
• Identification photographs must be provided. The applicant must supply at least two ID photographs that are in line with the photograph guidelines for a Schengen visa. These photos can be no older than 6 months.
• The applicant must also provide proof of residency in the U.S. This could be shown as a visa or a utility bill. Ensure that the original document and a copy are provided.
• A valid residence permit must be provided.
• Schengen travel health insurance is essential. The applicant must provide proof they have purchased health insurance that covers them in the Schengen area with a minimum of €30,000 in medical coverage, including emergencies.
• The applicant must provide proof they have accommodation arranged for their stay in the country. This can include proof they have made a hotel reservation, a rental agreement, or an Airbnb reservation. If the applicant is staying with someone in the country, an invitation letter is required as proof.
• Travel itinerary for the visit, including reserved flight tickets.
• Proof of sufficient finances. A recent bank statement from the last three months must be shown to show that the applicant has enough money to cover their travel to Germany. Bank statements must show the name and address of the applicant or owner.
• Those visiting friends or family members must provide a letter of invitation stating their relationship with you and the reason for the visit. If the individual is sponsoring the applicant, this must also be stated in the letter.
• Any documents required for a minor applicant.
• Relevant documents regarding work, self-employment, retirement, or sponsorship.

Additional visa requirements depend on the working status of the applicant.

If the applicant is employed, they will need to provide the following:

• Their employment contract
• A current bank statement showing the last 6 months
• Permission for leave from their employer
• ITR (Income Tax Return)

If the applicant is self-employed, they will need to provide the following:

• A copy of the individual’s business license
• A company bank statement for the last 6 months
• ITR (Income Tax Return)

If the applicant is a student, they will need to provide the following:

• Proof of their enrollment
• No-objection certificate from school or university
• Advertisements

If the applicant is retired, they will need to provide the following:

• A pension statement for the previous 6 months.

Where a child may be applying for a visa for entry into Germany on a short-stay visa, certain visa requirements need to be met for the child. The additional documents that must be provided in this case include the following:

• A birth certificate for the minor who is traveling to Germany
• A German application form that is signed by both parents
• A family court order if only one parent has full custody of the minor
• Certified copies of a passport or other ID for both parents
• A notarized parental authorization for the child to travel to Germany, which has been signed by both parents if the minor is traveling alone

How much money is required to prove financial stability on a German visa depends on the visa type and the length of your stay. However, it is advisable to go by the rule that a person should be able to prove they have a minimum of €45 ($48.99) per day to spend during their stay in Germany.

Financial means can be shown via proof of sponsorship or bank statements.

The German authorities must be aware that the applicant has the amount required. This is simply so that the authorities can be sure that the applicant will not be a financial burden after they enter the country.

When a person applies for a German visa, they will need to submit photographs of themselves that adhere to the government guidelines. The requirements are as follows:

• The photo should be 35x45mm (1.37×1.77 inches) in size
• The photo should be recent (no older than 6 months)
• The applicant’s face should take up 70–80% of the image
• A full frontal view of the face should be displayed
• The photo should be of high quality and accurately represent the person’s true appearance
• The background should be light gray
• The photo should be sharp in focus, properly contrasted, and clear
• Red eyes, reflections in the images, and shadows across the face are not accepted
• The lighting must be even
• The image must be on high-quality paper
• The print resolution must be at least 600 dpi
• The applicant must provide at least 2 of the same images

The language requirements for a German visa will depend on the specifics of the visa. For example, there is no language requirement for a tourist visa. However, student visas may benefit from German, even though there is no specified requirement.

Business visas often require a level of German proficiency, as do visas to join a family member in Germany. These people will need to prove they have a sufficient level of German to have everyday interactions.

Those who have a mandatory visa requirement to enter the Schengen area will need to take out private health insurance or statutory health insurance to reside in Germany.

Health insurance regulations are different for guest workers, students, and immigrants, however.

Every type of visa requires a specific application process. Short-stay and long-stay visas have different processes and different forms, as do business visas, tourist visas, and family visas.

To apply, applicants should follow these steps:

1. Find out the visa type needed.
2. Check where to apply.
3. Fill out the relevant application form and collect the visa requirements and documents.
4. Schedule your visa interview.
5. Attend the interview at the appropriate Embassy or Consulate.
6. Await a response.

It can take up to 15 days for a German short-stay visa to be processed. However, it can be up to 30 days during peak seasons and 60 days in some extreme cases. This is why it is best to apply as soon as possible.

German Schengen Visas will vary in cost. A German Schengen visa will cost:

• €90 for adults for a short-stay visa
• €75 for adults who apply for a long-stay visa
• €45 for children under 12 years of age
• Children under 6 years of age are free

Some categories may be exempt from paying fees or pay a lower amount. However, it is also worth taking into account the costs of travel insurance, obtaining copies of documents and translations, as well as flights, and showing you are financially capable.
