The UK Ancestry visa is designed for Australian citizens and other nationals of the commonwealth who have a grandparent who was born in the UK. What Australians Can and Cannot Do on a UK Ancestry Visa
With a UK Ancestry visa, you can live, work or study in the country, and also bring your spouse or partner and children as your dependants, for as long as five years.
You don’t need a prior job offer to apply for the visa. After arriving in the UK, you may get engaged in full-time or part-time work.
You must have sufficient funds to cover your and your dependants’ (if any) expenses in the UK without accessing public funds. You can also be self-employed or take up volunteering work.
After five years, you can apply to renew your visa or even for an indefinite leave to remain (ILR) to settle in the UK.
UK Ancestry Visa Requirements for Australians
Australian citizens applying for a UK Ancestry visa need to meet some requirements. You must:
- Be 17 years old or above
- Be a commonwealth citizen, British overseas territories citizen, British overseas citizen, a British national (overseas), or a Zimbabwean national
- File your application from outside the UK
- Prove that you have a grandparent who was born in the UK (or the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man)
- Wish to take up a job when you enter the UK
- Be able to financially support or accommodate your dependents who join you on the visa without relying on the UK’s public funds
You can claim ancestry even if your parents or grandparents were not married. However, stepchildren cannot claim UK ancestry.

To prove your eligibility for the UK Ancestry visa, you will have to provide evidence demonstrating that you meet the visa requirements.
Here’s a list of relevant documents you may need to submit along with your visa application (however, note that this is not an exhaustive list and you may have to submit additional documents depending on your situation):
- Your current, valid passport or an equivalent travel document
- Your birth certificate or legal adoption papers (in case you or your parent is adopted)
- The birth certificates of the concerned parent and grandparent based on whom you are claiming your UK ancestry
- Documents proving that you are planning to work in the UK once you are granted the visa
- Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your and your dependents’ (if any) expenses (such as bank statements dated within 31 days from your visa application date)
- Documents proving that the concerned parent or grandparent of yours has changed their name since birth, if applicable

How to Apply for UK Ancestry Visa from Australia
As an Australian citizen, follow this step-by-step process to apply for a UK Ancestry visa from Australia (or from your current country of residence):
Know if You Qualify for UK Ancestry visa
You must first understand your situation and know if you qualify to obtain the UK Ancestry visa. This is the stage where you need to consult one of our immigration lawyers at Total Law to help assess your situation and advise you.
Complete the Online Application Form
Once you meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the visa, you need to complete the online UK Ancestry visa application form with the correct information. You can apply online 3 months before entering the UK.
Avoid falsification of information as it could cause your application to be rejected should the UK authorities doubt the authenticity of your application. Any dependent that will join you in the UK must apply separately.
Gather and Upload Required Documents
After filling out your online application form, you will be required to gather several documents to support your application.
Get your original documents when required and do not include any forged documents so that you’ll not have your UK Ancestry visa declined. After getting your documents you must upload their scanned copies in the required size and format.
Pay Your Application Fees
You must pay your visa processing fees and other necessary fees including healthcare surcharge, biometric residence permit, consular fees and more. Ensure you pay through the accepted payment method, typically via debit or credit card.
Schedule a Visa Appointment
As an Australian applicant, you are required to schedule an appointment with your nearest VFS Global visa application centre online. At the appointment, the visa officials may interview you to know if you are qualified to issue the UK Ancestry visa.
They will also assess your documents and know if the answers you have provided correctly reflect what is contained in the documents you submitted. Also, at the appointment, you will be required to provide a digital scan of your fingerprints and photographs (biometric information).
You are required to be at the visa application centre for the appointment in person. If your children will join you to enter the UK, they must also be present at the visa application centre. You will be required to help them where necessary if they are under 18 years old.
Await a Decision
After you have applied for a UK Ancestry visa, your application will be processed. You will be notified when a decision is made on your visa application. If your visa is approved, you will be instructed on how to access your eVisa on the Home Office website.
Processing Time for UK Ancestry Visa Application
Australian citizens applying for a UK Ancestry visa should expect a decision to be made on their application in 3 weeks. To expedite the processing time, you can pay a priority service fee to get a decision in 5 working days or the super priority service fee to get a decision before the next working day passes.
Having paid to get a faster decision, you might still experience a delay in the process if the Home Office needs you to provide some additional documentation to support your application.
Duration of Stay on the UK Ancestry Visa
As an Australian citizen who holds a UK Ancestry visa, you will be allowed to stay in the United Kingdom for up to 5 years. After the expiration of this visa, you can apply to extend it for another 5 years.
Alternatively, you may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK. With this visa, you won’t be permitted to access public funds but you will be allowed to live, work, study and take up either full-time or part-time jobs in the UK.
Bring Your Family from Australia to Join You in the UK
Spouse/partner and minor children of a UK Ancestry visa holder can join them in the UK as long as they meet the visa conditions including suitability requirements. They can work or study in the UK and enter and exit the country freely once they are granted a visa. Like yourself, your dependants cannot access public funds.
You adult children may also apply as your dependants if they previously were included on your or your partner’s UK visa as dependants (for applicants within the UK).
Your dependent child must live with you (unless residing at a boarding school or college/university and pursuing full-time education). They must not be married or in a civil partnership or have any children of their own.
Any children born while you are residing in the UK will not be able to automatically claim British citizenship. You will have to apply for their dependant visa before they turn 18.
UK Ancestry Visa Extension, Settlement and Citizenship
To renew or extend your UK Ancestry visa, apply online and pay a processing fee of £1,407 and the applicable healthcare surcharge.
Make an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point to provide your biometric information. You can also have your supporting documents scanned at your UKVCAS appointment if you are unable to submit them online during application.
The Home Office may take up to eight weeks to reach a decision. You will be allowed to stay in the UK during this period as long as you have applied before your current visa expiry date.
However, please do not travel outside of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision, to avoid the withdrawal of your application.
Alternatively, you may apply for ILR after living in the country for five years on a UK Ancestry visa, provided you meet the relevant requirements. After holding ILR for 12 months, you may apply to become a British citizen if you fulfil all other conditions.
