Obtaining British Citizenship As an Australian
Australian citizens can visit the UK visa-free for up to 6 months, provided they meet the visitor rules. Some other Commonwealth nationals aren’t so lucky and may need a visitor visa, depending on nationality and circumstances.
None of this has anything to do with becoming a British citizen, though, that’s a separate process, with routes including naturalisation, citizenship by birth or descent, and applications as the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen.

ILR itself removes the time limits, once granted, someone can live, work and study in the UK freely. It just isn’t citizenship. That step still has to be applied separately.

Routes To British Citizenship For Australians
Australian citizens who want to obtain British citizenship can get it by the following routes:
British Citizenship by Naturalisation
Naturalisation is the main route for Australians who weren’t born in the UK. Most applicants need at least 5 years of lawful UK residence, at least 12 months holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or another permanent status, and to meet the good character, Life in the UK, and English language requirements.
Married to a British citizen? The timeline shortens to 3 years of residence, with ILR or settled status held on the date of application and no 12-month wait required.
There’s a limit on time spent abroad as well, no more than 450 days outside the UK across the 5 qualifying years, and no more than 90 days in the 12 months right before applying.
The application itself goes in on Form AN, and most decisions land within around 6 months.
British Citizenship by Birth
Being born in the UK makes a child a British citizen automatically if at least one parent was British or settled here at the time. If neither parent qualifies, the child isn’t automatically British and instead follows the parents’ immigration status, though registering as a British citizen later is still possible, including after 10 years living in the UK with only limited time away.

British Citizenship by Descent
An Australian born outside the UK to a British parent may qualify for citizenship by descent, either automatically or by registering, depending on when and how they were born.
One limitation worth noting, a British citizen by descent generally can’t pass citizenship directly to a child born outside the UK, except in narrow exceptions such as Crown service.

Australian citizens applying for British citizenship must meet the eligibility requirements for the citizenship route they choose. Below are the eligibility requirements for British citizenship routes:
Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship by Naturalisation
- Good character
- Aged 18 or over
- 5 years of UK residence (3 years if married to a British citizen), with physical presence in the UK on the relevant qualifying date
- No more than 450 days spent outside the UK across those 5 qualifying years, and no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying
- Proficiency in English and knowledge of life in the UK, Australian citizens are exempt from the English test itself by nationality, but still need to pass the Life in the UK test
- ILR or another permanent status held for at least 12 months before applying, though this wait doesn’t apply if married to a British citizen (ILR or settled status still needs to be held at the time of application)
- An intention to keep living in the UK
Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship by Birth
- At least one parent was British or settled in the UK when the child was born, or the child has since lived in the UK for a qualifying period, often the first 10 years of life, with limits on time spent abroad
- The applicant is under 18, for registration routes aimed at children
Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship by Descent
This one depends heavily on timing: whether the applicant was born before 1983, between 1983 and June 2006, or on or after 1 July 2006, and on the British parent’s status at the time of birth. It’s a more complex, more frequently amended set of rules than the other routes.
Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship by Marriage
- ILR, settled status or another qualifying permanent status held at the time of application
- Aged 18 or over
- Married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen
- 3 years of UK residence before applying, with no more than 270 days outside the UK during that period and no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying
- Good character
- Proficiency in English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic, and knowledge of life in the UK
Life In The UK Test Requirements for UK Citizenship
The Life in the UK Test, often called the British citizenship test, has 24 multiple‑choice questions on British history, culture and everyday life, based on the official Life in the UK Handbook.
The test is required for most Australians applying for naturalisation, and you must score at least 75%, which means answering 18 out of 24 questions correctly. If you have already passed the test for a previous ILR application, you do not need to take it again and can use the same pass reference with your citizenship application.
There are exemptions, such as a long-term physical or mental condition that would prevent you from taking the test, or being under 18, 65 or older. Book online at least 3 days ahead at an approved centre.
On the day, bring proof of address and the same ID you used to book, miss either one and you won’t be sitting the test, and the fee’s gone too. Pass, and you get a confirmation plus a reference number worth holding onto for your settlement or citizenship application. Fail, and you can simply book again.

Applying for British citizenship by naturalisation involves submitting several supporting documents, including:
- Current Australian passport and any previous passports covering the period you have lived in the UK
- Biometric Residence Permit or other evidence of your current immigration status, if held
- Evidence of residence in the UK for the qualifying period, such as tenancy agreements, council tax bills, employment records or GP letters
- Documents showing your lawful immigration status throughout the qualifying period
- An approved English language test certificate or evidence of a degree taught in English, unless you are exempt by nationality
