Who Needs to Obtain a Spain Student Visa?
American citizens who wish to travel to Spain to study will likely be required to obtain a Student visa, depending on their circumstances and the intended length of their stay.
You should note that while US nationals are currently permitted to visit Spain for less than 90 days in a 180-day period without applying for a Schengen visa, the rules are set to change in 2025 after which even short stays will need the appropriate permissions.
If you are a US resident but are a national of one of the member countries of the European Union or the European Economic Area including Switzerland, you will not be required to apply for a visa. However, depending on the length of your stay you will need to register and obtain a NIE number and residence card once you are in Spain.
Under some circumstances, you may also choose to apply for a student visa if you are coming to Spain as a volunteer or as part of an Au Pair program.
Types of Student Visas in Spain
Spain student visas are mainly distinguished by the duration they cover.
Depending on what you are planning to do in Spain and whether this entails a longer or shorter stay, you will usually have to decide between the shortest option which is the Schengen student visa, the short-stay student visa, which offers a slightly longer stay, or a full-fledged long-stay student visa.
You will need to show that your planned education requires the duration of stay that you are applying for and that you will be able to financially support yourself for the chosen duration.
Schengen Student Visa Spain
Visa-required individuals who want to come to Spain for educational purposes that involve a stay of 90 days or less may be eligible to apply for the Spanish Schengen student visa. This may involve courses with limited durations, research conferences, or similar activities that are tied to the educational sector. You will not be allowed to seek employment while in Spain.
A benefit of the Schengen student visa is that it may allow for greater mobility within the Schengen region. You will need to select the multiple-entry option when applying and should note that if you apply through Spain, this will need to be your first port of entry.
You should note that this visa is limited to three months within a 180-day period and it is not eligible for extension or renewal. Should you decide to stay longer or wish to enroll in a longer degree or course, you will need to leave Spain before applying for a suitable long-stay visa alternative.
Short-Term Student Visa Spain
The short-stay student visa offers an opportunity for international students to come to Spain for a limited duration. Usually, it will be required if your course or other academic activities are expected to last between 91 and 180 days, covering the gap between the Schengen student visa and the long-stay student visa.
You will need to show that you have accepted an offer to study with one of Spain’s qualifying educational or vocational institutes. This will also apply to researchers who can show qualifying affiliations.
You will not be permitted to seek employment or otherwise engage in paid activities if you are in Spain with a short-stay student visa. This visa will not offer a path towards permanent residency and you must leave when your permission expires.
Long-Term Student Visa in Spain
The long-stay student visa or national student visa caters to students who have enrolled in extended courses such as standard university degrees or equivalent.
It covers durations that exceed the half-year limit of the short-stay student visa and will allow students to seek part-time employment as long as it can be shown that this does not negatively impact their education.
You will be expected to apply for a foreigner identity card within the first month of your arrival in Spain.
Important Considerations Before Applying for a Spain Student Visa
If you are planning to apply for a student visa, you will first need to be accepted for a qualifying educational program run by an officially recognized educational institution such as a school or university.
If you are a student enrolled with an American university and need to travel to Spain for a short-duration event such as a conference, you may be required to apply for a Schengen student visa. However, if you are planning to attend such an event before the ETIAS changes and US visa requirements come into effect in 2025, you may be exempt as a US national.
Keep in mind that this may not apply to US students with different nationalities and it is always best to check with an expert. Our team of immigration lawyers at Total Law specializes in the different Student visas that are available in Spain and will be happy to help you. Application Process for Spain Student Visa
Overview
Depending on the Spanish student visa type that you need, the student visa process may be slightly different.
While you can generally submit your initial Schengen visa application request online, long-stay visa applications must be submitted in person. You will need to contact your local Spanish immigration office for a visa appointment.
In the US this may be the Spanish embassy in Washington or your local Spanish consulate which might be in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, or San Francisco. Keep in mind that visa appointments may have a considerable wait time, so do not leave the process too late.
Visa Interview
On the day of your visa interview, you will need to bring all of your application details and documents.
You may be asked more about your plans in Spain and the program of study that you have been accepted for. The immigration official handling your application will take your biometric details and you will also need to pay your visa application fees.
After You Have Applied
At the end of your visa interview, you will be given a proof or receipt number which you will need to track your application status online and to collect your visa decision.
Spanish student visas may usually take about 15 days on average, but you should always plan for delays which may happen due to seasonal workload or if there are any problems with your application. It is important that you know what evidence you will be required to submit beforehand to prevent any undue delays or even a rejection due to missing documents.
Once your application has received a decision, you will need to collect this within one month.
Required Documents for a Spain Student Visa
The exact documents you will need when applying for a Spanish student visa will vary depending on the visa type and the circumstances of your stay. In general, you will need to show evidence of your identity and circumstances, proving that you are eligible for your chosen visa.
At a glance, you should be ready to provide the following:
- Your valid passport
- Your visa application form
- A photograph that meets visa requirements
- Details of your enrolment or other study plans
- Proof of an adequate health insurance cover
- A medical certificate showing that you have no significant condition that may pose a risk to the wider public
- Details of your accommodation plans
- Financial documentation showing that you can support yourself
- A criminal record check certificate
Students who are not yet 18 years old will need to be supported by a parent, legal guardian, or representative. You must show evidence of this relationship when applying, for example by providing the birth certificate of the applicant.
Proof of Financial Means
When applying for a Spanish student visa, you will need to show that you have the financial resources to support yourself for the entirety of your stay. This applies especially when applying for one of the shorter options as they do not permit you to seek any kind of paid employment, but it is a general requirement for all pathways.
The fees for whichever educational course or program that you are applying under must have been paid for as well.
If you are receiving support or sponsorship, you will need to provide a signed letter of confirmation that explains exactly how this will be arranged from the person or organization who accepts financial responsibility over you.
Additionally, you must show that your private health insurance covers you for any emergency so that there will not be a risk of you incurring costs you cannot afford due to a health crisis that could negatively impact the Spanish healthcare sector.
Fees for Student Visa Application
The visa fee may vary depending on the category that you are applying for and your personal circumstances. Usually, US citizens applying for a Spanish student visa should expect to pay around €80 for a standard national student visa.
Renewing a Spanish Student Visa
Depending on the student visa that you have applied for, you may be able to apply to renew it. In general, this is not an option for short-stay visas but if you have been issued a long-stay national student visa, you may be granted renewal if you still meet the conditions.
Long-stay student visas are usually issued with a validity of one year and you will need to make sure that you do not let it expire if you are planning to stay. Generally, you should apply for renewal within 60 days before your current visa expires.

Can I Work Full-Time on a Student Visa in Spain?
No, Spanish student visas are issued with a primary focus on education and full-time employment is likely to have a negative effect on your ability to study.
While short-stay student visas do not permit employment at all, you may be eligible to seek part-time employment if you have been granted a long-stay visa and you otherwise meet the eligibility requirements.
Remember to apply for a work permit if you plan to work, as a visa alone does not give you permission.
