Do I Need a Visa to Visit Family in the UK from Philippines
Since the Philippines is a visa-required country for the UK, you must apply for a Standard Visitor visa to enter the UK for visiting family. You must genuinely be visiting family and be able to evidence your connection to those you are visiting, as well as your intention to return to the Philippines after your trip to the UK.
If you also hold the citizenship of another country such as the USA, Australia, Canada or an EU country, you can check if you can travel to the UK on an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) instead.
Only British citizens, Irish citizens, and people who already hold UK immigration status can travel to the UK without needing any pre-travel authorisation at all.

Family Visitor Visa Validity
You may stay in the UK for up to six months or as long as your visa is valid once your visa is granted, whichever is shorter. However, it is important to understand that because your purpose of coming to the UK is to visit family, you must show your itinerary while there is consistent with this.
Proving Ties to the Philippines & Connection to Family
You cannot overstay your visa and must prove economic ties to the Philippines to prove to the case worker assessing your visa application that you intend to return home after your visit. It is also important to show what you plan to do in the UK.
For example, if you are attending a wedding but your return flight is booked for 6 months after you arrive this could raise a red flag. A caseworker may then believe that attending that family members wedding is not the main reason for visiting, so you should clearly explain who you are staying with and why.
You may, for example, plan to help out with a new baby after the wedding, which would be a genuine reason for a longer stay. You should be able to prove your connection to the sponsoring family in the UK. If UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) believes you do not meet the eligibility criteria for the entire visa duration you have applied for, they may grant you a visa with a shorter validity.
What Can You Do On a Family Visitor Visa?
While in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa, you will be permitted only to do certain activities as specified by the Home Office. You will not be allowed to work for a UK employer or as a self-employed person (unless you are doing a permitted paid engagement or event), access public funds, marry in the UK or register a civil partnership (or give notice to that effect) etc.
Who Can You Visit on a UK Family Visit Visa?
The “Family Visitor visa” is a purpose category within the UK Standard Visitor visa, sitting under Appendix V of the Immigration Rules alongside tourism, business and short-term study. The Visitor visa itself, the fee, and the core eligibility requirements are the same whatever your purpose. What changes is the evidence UKVI expects.
When your stated purpose is a family visit, your invitation letters, itinerary and financial evidence should all support that specific purpose. Below is an overview of the most common reasons people apply for a Family Visit visa, along with what strengthens each type of application.
Visiting Your Husband or Wife
If your spouse is living, working or studying in the UK and you’re visiting temporarily rather than applying to settle, this is a standard family visit.
You’ll need to show your marriage certificate, evidence of ongoing contact, and importantly clear evidence you intend to return home rather than stay with your spouse indefinitely. A common refusal trigger is UKVI reading the visit as a precursor to settlement, so strong ties to your home country (work, property, other family) help address this directly.
Visiting Your Fiancée or Fiancé
A short visit to see a partner ahead of marriage is a valid reason to apply. However, if you intend to marry, register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership while in the UK, a Family Visit visa is the wrong category – you’ll need a Marriage Visitor visa instead.
This carries its own evidential requirements. Applying under the wrong category is a common and entirely avoidable cause of refusal.
Visiting Your Children
You can visit children who are studying, working or living in the UK. You’ll need to show the parent-child relationship, typically with a birth certificate, and as with any visit evidence you intend to leave the UK afterwards.
Where a child under 18 is the one travelling, different rules on parental consent and unaccompanied minors apply.
Reasons & Events Where Family Visitor Visa Is Suitable
Attending a Graduation
Graduation ceremonies are a common and generally straightforward reason to apply, provided you can evidence the date and your invitee’s enrollment. A confirmation letter from the university or college, alongside your relationship evidence, strengthens the application considerably.
Keep your trip length reasonably proportionate to the event. A six-week visit built around a one-day ceremony can itself invite questions about your real purpose.
Attending a Wedding
You can attend a wedding as a guest or family member without issue. Bring the wedding invitation itself, ideally with your name on it, plus evidence of your relationship to the couple or family.
If you are the one getting married, or registering a civil partnership, in the UK, this requires a Marriage Visitor visa, not a Family Visit visa. If you are getting married, or entering a civil partnership and intend to remain in the UK afterwards, no visitor visa route is appropriate, you would need to apply for a Fiance visa or Spouse visa.
Attending a Christening
The same principle applies to christenings and baptisms: evidence of the event such as an invitation, an order of service, or correspondence with the church or family is required, plus proof of your relationship to the child or family involved.
Visiting to Support Family With a New Born Baby
If you’re travelling to be with a daughter, sibling, or other relative around the birth of a baby, this is a recognised reason for a family visit, provided the visit remains temporary and consistent with the Visitor Rules. Useful evidence includes confirmation of the due date or birth, your relationship to the mother, and clear evidence of your intention and ability to return home afterwards.
Longer or open-ended stays to provide ongoing childcare support may sit outside what a Standard Visitor visa permits, so it’s worth getting advice if your planned stay is extensive or the end date is unclear. It is typically expected, though discretionary, to have a return or onward ticket at the end of your trip, so speak to an immigration lawyer if you are unsure on your return date after a visit.
Sponsoring Family to Support With a New Born Baby
If you are a UK-based family member inviting a relative to support you after a birth, your role as sponsor matters as much as the applicant’s own evidence. A detailed invitation letter explaining the relationship, the reason for the visit, how long they’re staying, and who is funding the trip significantly strengthens the application.
Include evidence of your own status in the UK and, where relevant, evidence of the birth or pregnancy.
Permitted Family Events
There is not a list of family events that aren’t covered under the Family route of the Visitor visa. Each itinerary and reason for attending, as well as the evidence is accounted for on a case by case basis. Typical events you can apply for a Visitor visa though are to:
- Attend a graduation ceremony for a child or other family member.
- Attend a wedding as a guest or member of the family.
- Attend a christening or baptism involving a family member.
- Attend a family event or celebration, such as a birthday, anniversary or other significant family occasion.
- Attend a funeral or support family members following a bereavement.
- Visit family during pregnancy and/or following the birth of a new baby, for example, to spend time with your daughter, sibling or another close relative and meet the new baby.
- Support a family member around the time of a birth where the purpose of your visit is temporary and consistent with the Visitor Rules.
What are the Eligible Requirements for UK Family Visitor Visa?
To be eligible for a UK family visitor visa, the first thing you will need to prove is that you have family members or friends rightfully living in the country, and you are coming to the UK to visit them on a short-term basis, without any intention to make the UK your home.
It is of vital importance to prove that you will leave the UK once your visa validity is over, and you have enough financial resources to pay for your return/onward journey, or have a sponsor to pay for your tickets. In addition, you or your sponsor must be able to cover for your expenses and your accommodation in the UK (same for any dependants traveling with you).
If you wish to take up any of the below activities while in the UK visiting family and friends, you may have to meet additional eligibility requirements:
- Receive medical treatment
- Attend a short study course, do a placement or take an exam
- Teach, take part in research or undertake clinical practice (on a temporary basis) as an academic, senior doctor or dentist
- Take up a permitted paid engagement
UK Family Visitor Visa Document Requirements
Filipino nationals coming to the UK for visiting family/friends will need the following information and supporting documents:
- Your current Filipino passport, valid for the entire period of your stay in the UK and with at least one blank page for your visa
- Name(s), address(es) and passport number(s) of your family members or friends in the UK
- Your travel itinerary including your return/onward journey date
- Proof of accommodation in the UK during your visit, e.g. hotel reservation, a letter from your family/friends confirming you will be staying with them etc.
- Tentative cost of your UK trip and proof of funds (or sponsorship) to meet the same
- Your residential address in the Philippines and for how long you have been living there
- Your parents’ names and dates of birth
- Your spouse/partner’s name, date of birth and passport number (where applicable)
- Your income proof certificate (if you have an income), e.g. payslips, tax returns etc.
- Your employer’s address and telephone number, if you are employed
- Records of any criminal, civil or immigration offenses
- Your immigration history for the last 10 years
- Details of your sponsor(s) for the UK trip, if applicable
- A tuberculosis test certificate (if applicable)
- Travel health insurance
- Written consent from your parent/guardian to travel to the UK if you are under 18 and traveling alone
You must provide certified translations of any documents that are not in English or Welsh.
What is the Refusal Rate for the UK Visitor Visa Route from the Philippines?
Because this route has historically been used by some applicants who intended to stay in the UK long-term, caseworkers apply a high level of scrutiny to every application. Refusal rates vary significantly by nationality, and countries with a documented history of visitors overstaying tend to see higher refusal rates as a result.
For the Philippines, Home Office entry-clearance statistics for the year ending March 2026 put the visitor visa approval rate at around 86% meaning roughly 1 in 7 applications is refused, most commonly over evidence rather than eligibility itself.
Sponsor Requirements for a Family Visitor Visa UK
In case your UK trip is being funded by your family members or friends living in the UK, you will have to provide information and documents like the following:
- Proof that your sponsor is providing for your accommodation in the UK, covering your expenses during the trip, and paying for your return/onward journey
- They have sufficient funds to cover for all of the above, such as their bank statements, salary slips, pension, any other income proofs etc.
- Proof of relationship between you and your family member sponsor
- Documents proving your sponsor’s permission to remain in the UK, e.g. their British passport or visa/residence permit
How to Apply for a UK Family Visitor Visa?
You will have to apply online for a UK family visitor visa. Start with creating an account on the Home Office website with an email ID. Please have all your supporting documents and other relevant information ready with you so as to answer the questions on the online form completely and accurately.
After completing the form, please submit it along with scanned copies of your supporting documents and pay the visa fees online. Next, you will have to book an appointment with a UK visa application center (VAC) to submit your passport and supporting documents, and provide your biometric details.

UK Family Visitor Visa Processing Time and Fees
The visa processing fee for a UK family visitor visa is £135. If you are applying for a long-term Standard Visitor visa for two, five or 10 years, your visa fee will be £506, £903 or £1,128, respectively.
It usually takes up to three weeks to get a decision on your family visitor visa application. If your application form is incomplete or has inaccurate information, or if you are required to submit additional supporting documents, or if UKVI is experiencing a high volume of visa applications, your waiting time may go up. If you want a decision earlier you may pay for the Home Office Priority or Super Priority services. However, it is important to note that this just speeds up the decision and doesn’t guarantee that you will be successful.
Multiple Visits
You may also be eligible to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa for 2 years, 5 years or 10 years, if you have valid reason(s) to visit the UK regularly. However, you will only be able to stay for up to six months on each visit, and your visa may get cancelled if your passport shows that you are living in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits. It is also typical that you do not receive a multiple-visit Visitor visa on your first time travelling to the UK because the Home Office prefer a trail of proof that you have followed UK immigration rules.
Submitting in a Rush and Omitting Evidence Can Slow You Down
Omitting evidence can lead to delays or refusals. If there is one or two pieces of evidence or a small clarification to make, your application may merely be delayed and you’ll be asked to clarify. However, do not expect this. Case workers have a heavy case load and frequently encounter insufficient evidence.
If they reasonably suspect you may stay after your visit, you may be refused outright. It does not stop you reapplying to fix the ‘reason for refusal’ but a new application means another 3 week wait for a decision and a new application fee. Especially if you have a tight turnaround this can be a major challenge.
In the event you have built a strong body of evidence and provided everything necessary for a case worker to review your request you should receive a decision within 3 weeks.
What if My Family Visit Visa Application is Refused?
A refusal is disheartening, especially when you were hoping to be with family for an important moment. Understanding how you’re notified, what your options are, and why professional advice matters can put you in a much stronger position, whether this is your first refusal or not.
What Are My Options After a Refusal?
Standard Visitor refusals generally do not carry a right of appeal or administrative review. In most cases, your decision letter will outline the reason you are refused, and the best next step is to fix what was wrong with the original application, especially if it was rejected due to a lack of evidence. Your realistic options are:
- Reapply, with a new application that directly and specifically addresses every concern raised in the refusal notice, supported by clear evidence rather than repeated assertion.
- Judicial review, in limited circumstances — typically where there’s an arguable public law error in how the decision was made, rather than simply disagreeing with the outcome.
- A human rights-based application, in rarer cases where refusing the visit would breach your rights or those of family members in the UK.
Why It’s Important to Get Your Application Right
Because most refusals on this route can’t be appealed, a well-prepared application matters as much the second time as the first. A rushed reapplication that doesn’t fully address the refusal reasons risks another refusal, adding further weight against you, and potentially costing you the event you were hoping to attend, since family occasions don’t wait for the application process.
