How to Renew or Replace Your British Passport in the Philippines

If you’re looking to renew your passport while in the Philippines and are a British passport holder, you can replace your old passport with a new one by following an online renewal or replacement process. In the UK, you can renew your passport using a paper form and submitting it at a post office, but when overseas the entire process is done online.

There are two types of passport renewal:

    • A standard renewal; where your passport is due to expire or doesn’t have enough time left on it before expiry to travel (every country has different entry requirements regarding the amount of time that must remain on a passport ahead of travel)
    • A replacement; where your passport has been damaged, lost or stolen and needs replacing.

Both types of renewal can be managed online from the Philippines without having to travel to the UK in person.

There is a common misconception that the burgundy coloured British passports reading ‘European Union’ across the top are invalid now that the country has left the EU. This is not the case and such passports remain valid until their expiry.

UK Passport Renewal Requirements from the Philippines

To renew or replace your British passport from the Philippines, you will need to be an existing British passport holder. If you are not a dual Filipino-British national or a British national, you may be eligible to apply for your first passport from the UK but this holds separate eligibility requirements.

In the case of a passport renewal, you will need:

    • The old original UK passport. This must be sent to an HM Passport Office for cancellation ahead of any newer passport being issued
    • Any other un-cancelled UK passport or travel document relating to the applicant
    • In the case of any name change, a valid marriage certificate and/or proof of name change and updated identification
    • If the previous UK passport was issued before 2004 or is older than 10 years, all documentation must be submitted as though this is a brand new passport application. This includes original identification and demonstration of British citizenship.

Only original passports must be returned to the HM Passport Office: copies will not be accepted.

In the event of a passport replacement because it has been lost or stolen, the existing passport must be cancelled through the completion of an online form before a replacement application is made. If your passport has been stolen, you should report it to the police and obtain a crime number to supply along with your cancellation request.

If a passport is damaged, it will not be valid for travel and must be replaced. A passport is considered damaged if:

    • Any of the details are illegible to read
    • Any of the pages are ripped, cut or missing
    • There are any holes, cuts or rips in the passport cover
    • The passport cover is coming away
    • Any of the pages have stains.

The damaged passport will need to be returned to HM Passport Office.

Changing a name on a British passport from the Philippines

If your name changes and you need to update your passport, you may request a replacement and return your old passport. However, the following points should be considered:

    • Evidence must be provided of the legality of all name changes
    • Your new name should be put into the ‘surname’ and ‘first and middle name’ boxes and your previous name noted in the ‘maiden or all previous names’ box
    • If your middle name has appeared on previous passports but you don’t wish it to be in a new one, you must note this in section 8 of the application form. If not, it will be included as per your previous passports
    • All previous names or maiden names must be listed in the application, regardless of how long ago they were used
    • To change a child’s name on their passport, legal written permission must be included from all parties who hold parental responsibility over them.

If you’re unsure of the evidence to supply or how best to manage a name or gender change, Total Law can help. Call our office now on 0333 305 9375 for advice.

    Step by Step Passport Renewal

Step 1—The passport renewal depends on how you apply. It is usually done because your passport is expiring or expired, but it can also be done if it is lost or stolen. You will need to send your existing passport by post. Step 2 – You can apply online using gov.uk/apply-renew-passport or the Post Office Check & Send service. It costs the same to renew your passport as it does to get your first UK passport.Step 3 – Submit an application for passport renewal with a passport photo and your personal information. Pay the fee.

How to renew a British Passport from the Philippines

Applying for the renewal or replacement of a British passport while you’re in the Philippines is now done online and can no longer be processed at an Embassy or Consulate. The following can be considered the standard process:

    Have passport photo taken

An updated digital photograph will need to be supplied along with the passport application. Such photos must fit British passport standards, and so must:

    • Be taken in the last month
    • Be in colour, clear and in focus
    • Be unaltered by any computer software
    • Be at least 600px wide and 750px tall
    • Be at least 50KB but no more than 10MB in size
    • Contain no objects or people
    • Be taken against a plain and light-coloured background
    • Have no ‘red eye’
    • The subject must be facing forwards and looking into the camera
    • The subject must hold a plain expression with eyes open and mouth closed
    • The subject must have no hair covering their eyes and nothing covering their face (including shadows)
    • The subject must not wear a head covering unless it is for religious or medical reasons.

Photos will be rejected if they do not fit the exact criteria and so it is critical that applicants supply an appropriate photograph. Several retail outlets and photo booths offer passport photo services and will retake pictures for free if they do not meet the set requirements.

Complete the online application form and pay fee

The passport renewal or replacement form is completed online by the applicant and the fee paid. The digital photo and any required supporting documentation are supplied alongside it.

Send in your previous passport to the Passport Office

In the case of a renewal, the previous passport must be sent to the local HM Passport Office, with details of the new application enclosed.

    Attend video interview, if requested

Video interviews with British passport holders are sometimes requested by British immigration authorities. If this is the case, you will be required to attend a Skype or Zoom interview with a member of staff and answer some questions on your application. This is often just a formality, but if you need help preparing for such an interview contact Total Law on 0333 305 9375.

    Receive new UK passport

The applicant will receive their new passport by secure post as soon as it has been processed.

Eligibility Criteria for British Passport Renewal from the Philippines

      • Your current British passport must be undamaged and not expired for more than 10 years. It should be issued when you were an adult (16 years or older).
      • You must be a British citizen or have British nationality. If you hold dual nationality, ensure your British citizenship is valid.
      • If you live outside the UK, including the Philippines, you can apply for a passport renewal from abroad. There are no specific residency duration requirements, but ensure your current address is in the Philippines if applying from there.
      • You must apply online or through the UK government’s official channels. If you cannot apply online, you may need to complete a paper application form and submit it via post.
      • You must provide personal details, including your name, date of birth, and place of birth. If your name has changed, you will need to provide documentation (e.g., marriage certificate, deed poll).
      • You must provide a recent passport-sized photo that meets specific guidelines. Additional documents may include proof of your British nationality (e.g., birth certificate, naturalization certificate) and any supporting identification.

      Important Notes:

      • If your passport is lost or stolen, the renewal process will differ.
      • If you are unsure about your eligibility or have unique circumstances (e.g., special status), it may be beneficial to contact the nearest British embassy or consulate for assistance.
