In the UK, you can renew your passport using a paper form and submitting it at a post office, but when overseas the entire process is done online.

There are two types of passport renewal:

• A standard renewal; where your passport is due to expire or doesn’t have enough time left on it before expiry to travel (every country has different entry requirements regarding the amount of time that must remain on a passport ahead of travel)
• A replacement; where your passport has been damaged, lost or stolen and needs replacing.

Both types of renewal can be managed online from the Philippines without having to travel to the UK in person. The standard overseas fee for an adult renewal is £116.50, and applications typically take up to 10 weeks to process from the Philippines, so it’s worth applying well ahead of any travel plans.

To renew or replace your British passport from the Philippines, you will need to be an existing British passport holder. If you are not a dual Filipino-British national or a British national, you may be eligible to apply for your first passport from the UK, but this holds separate eligibility requirements.

In the case of a passport renewal, you will need:

• The old original UK passport. This must be sent to HM Passport Office for cancellation ahead of any newer passport being issued
• Any other un-cancelled UK passport or travel document relating to the applicant
• In the case of any name change, a valid marriage certificate and/or proof of name change and updated identification
• If the previous UK passport was issued more than 10 years ago, or you’re renewing an older-style passport without a digital chip, you may need to submit additional documentation, including original identification and evidence of British citizenship, as though this were a new application.

Only original passports will be accepted by HM Passport Office; copies will not be accepted.

In the event of a passport replacement because it has been lost or stolen, the existing passport must be cancelled by reporting it as lost or stolen through gov.uk before a replacement application is made. If your passport has been stolen, you should also report it to the police (or the local equivalent if you’re in the Philippines) and obtain a crime reference number to supply along with your report.

If a passport is damaged, it will not be valid for travel and must be replaced. A passport is considered damaged if:

• Any of the details are illegible to read
• Any of the pages are ripped, cut or missing
• There are any holes, cuts or rips in the passport cover
• The passport cover is coming away
• Any of the pages have stains.

The damaged passport will need to be returned to HM Passport Office.

If your name changes and you need to update your passport, you may apply for a replacement and return your old passport. However, the following points should be considered:

• Evidence must be provided of the legality of all name changes
• Your new name should be entered in the ‘surname’ and ‘first and middle names’ fields, with your previous name noted in the ‘maiden or all previous names’ field
• If your middle name has appeared on previous passports but you don’t wish it to appear on your new one, you must note this in section 8 of the application form. If you don’t, it will be included by default, as on your previous passports
• All previous names or maiden names must be listed on the application, regardless of how long ago they were used
• To change a child’s name on their passport, legal written permission must be included from everyone who holds parental responsibility for them.

How to pay

Eligibility Criteria for British Passport Renewal from the Philippines

• Your current British passport must be undamaged and not expired for more than 10 years. It should be issued when you were an adult (16 years or older).
• You must be a British citizen or have British nationality. If you hold dual nationality, ensure your British citizenship is valid.
• If you live outside the UK, including the Philippines, you can apply for a passport renewal from abroad. There are no specific residency duration requirements, but ensure your current address is in the Philippines if applying from there.
• You must apply online or through the UK government’s official channels. If you cannot apply online, you may need to complete a paper application form and submit it via post.
• You must provide personal details, including your name, date of birth, and place of birth. If your name has changed, you will need to provide documentation (e.g., marriage certificate, deed poll).
• You must provide a recent passport-sized photo that meets specific guidelines. Additional documents may include proof of your British nationality (e.g., birth certificate, naturalization certificate) and any supporting identification.

Documentation Needed
