What is an Intra-Company Transfer Visa in Spain?
The Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) Visa for Spain, known in Spanish as the “autorización de residencia por traslado intraempresarial” or “Traslado Intraempresarial,” allows employees of multinational companies to transfer to a branch or subsidiary of the company they work for that is located in Spain.
The purpose of this visa is to allow international organisations to move and utilise their employees between their various locations in different countries, for specific business purposes.
The Intra-Company transfer visa allows foreign nationals to move to Spain for a specified period and be allowed to work and reside in Spain in line with Spanish immigration legislation.

What Are the Benefits of Obtaining an Intra-Company Transfer Visa?
This type of Spanish visa offers great benefits for foreign employees of non-EU companies to move to and reside in Spain, whilst continuing to work for their organisation.
For the employee, the intra-company transfer visa provides:
- A Spanish residence permit, which allows visa holders to legally live in Spain for the duration of the their transfer (usually 1 year)
- An intra-company transfer work permit
- The option for the applicant to bring their family to Spain with them.
For the non-EU employer, the intra-company transfer visa provides:
- The option to request the transfer of highly skilled employees and managers who work for their company abroad to their Spanish branch or subsidiary, allowing them to develop their business and team in Spain, or to help complete a particular project or contract in Spain
- The benefits of offering professional employees and their families exciting travel opportunities to Spain within their company
- The support and broader framework aimed at supporting the mobility of professionals, specialists, and managers in the global business sector.
Application Process for Obtaining Au Pair Visa in Spain
If you are a non-EU citizen, there are a number of steps which you will need to complete in order to work as an Au Pair in Spain.
Firstly, you will need to choose a host family for whom to Au Pair. This can be done online, using websites such as aupair.com. If a match is found, you should make sure to obtain an Au Pair Agreement where the expectations and duties are clearly outlined and both you and the host family sign the agreement.
Next, you should enrol in a Spanish educational course which is at least 20 hours a week, within commutable distance of your host family.
Once these steps have been completed, you can now apply for a Student visa. You can do so via your local Spanish embassy or consulate. You will be required to provide all of the necessary documentation.
When your application has been submitted, it will then be processed. If your application is successful, you will receive a visa which will allow you to enter Spain and work for an Au Pair for up to 1 year.
Who is Eligible for an Intra-Company Transfer Visa Spain?
Overview
To be eligible for an Intra-Company Transfer Visa, several criteria must be met:
Requirements for applicants:
- The employee must be a non-EU foreign nationals with no EU residency
- The applicant must already be employed by the company that will be transferring them to its Spanish location
- They meet the specific job role requirements and eligibility criteria, for example they:
- Work in Management or Senior Management
- Are a graduate of a prestigious university or business school
- Work in a highly skilled or specialist role, or
- are a trainee requiring specific training within the Spanish branch of the organisation.
- Proof that their role and/or reasons for transferring to Spain are necessary for the company
- Proof that the relationship with the employer is authentic, and that they have been an employee for at least a 3 month period before the transfer occurs, and there is evidence to support they will continue to work for the employer after they return home from Spain.
The applicant must also:
- Have a university degree (bachelor’s or higher), and/or
- At least 3 years of significant experience or expertise in the role or field they are applying for
Requirements for non-EU companies:
- The company must be part of a group of companies that operates both outside the European Union and in Spain.
- The company must nominate the employee as part of their visa application, and where appropriate offer reasonable support or fulfil certain salary requirements to move the employee and their family to Spain to ensure the employee can legally meet the criteria of the visa for the full validity period.
Eligible Family Members
The Spanish Intra-Company Transfer visa is a desirable visa type for many applicants, as it allows workers the opportunity to take their family with them to Spain when they transfer for professional purposes. This provision ensures that the employee can relocate with their immediate family, offering the family the opportunity to stay together and in a stable condition whilst the worker completes their transfers.
The following family members may be eligible to join successful applicants of the intra-company transfer visa and move to Spain for the duration of the work permit validity period:
- Spouses or unmarried partners
- Dependent children under 18, or adult children if they are financially dependent on the transferred worker and do have a family of their own
- Parents or grandparents if they are dependent on the worker.

What Documents Do I Need to Apply for a Spain ICT Visa?
The non-EU Spouse visa requires extensive documentation to prove your relationship. It also requires the involvement of you and your partner. Your partner will present the necessary evidence to immigration authorities in Spain while you do the same at the Spanish embassy or consulate abroad.
Overview
Each applicant will need to provide supporting documents as part of their application, including official documents proving their identity, work and financial status, as well as evidence of their relationship to the employer. Medical and criminal record certificates are also required. All documents should be translated into Spanish.
Please note that the Spanish authorities have the right to request any other further documentation as part of the immigration process, and that you may be inclined to provide an interview, particularly if your circumstances are complex or if you have a criminal record.
For the employee wishing to transfer to Spain by applying for the ICT visa, they must submit the following documents:
- A fully completed visa application form
- A valid passport containing biometric data, with at minimum a 1 year validity period before it expires
- A recent passport-size photograph that meets all passport photograph requirements
- A Spanish residence permit, obtained from the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit in Spain and proving the permit is within the consular district where the application is being submitted
- Medical certificate proving the applicant does not have an illness that is a threat to public health, as well as appropriate medical insurance (likely provided by the employer)
- A criminal record check certificate for the previous five years that has been apostilled or legalised
- Proof of representative’s identity and power of attorney, if applicable
Visa fee payment of approximately €73.26.
Required Documents for Family Members Joining Main Applicant
Any family member that is applying to join the main applicant in Spain through the ICT visa must submit their own documents as listed above. If the dependent is underage, the application will need to be completed by the parent or guardian.
In addition to the outlined documents, the family member must also submit:
- Documents proving family relationship – this can be done by submitting a birth or marriage certificate. For unmarried partners, a certificate of a registered or unregistered partnership, or proof of long-term partnership and cohabitation may be required. These documents must be legalised or apostille
- Documents proving financial dependency, legalised or apostilled – applicable dependent adult children or the parents or grandparents of the worker
- A separate medical insurance certificate, proving they have comprehensive health insurance covering a minimum of €30,000 in medical expenses.

How Do I Apply for the ICT Visa Spain?
To apply for the intra-company transfer visa, you must gather all the required documents and ensure the relevant ones have been legalised or apostilled, and translated into Spanish. In general, the decision period typically takes 10 approximately days. Please note that this can be extended if further documentation is required, or if you are called in for an interview. You will be notified of the decision in writing. Once the visa is granted, you must collect it within one month.
The visa is usually valid for up to one year, or the same duration as the residence permit, during which time the worker and any family members they bring with them can legally reside in Spain.
If your application is refused, you have one month to file an appeal with the Consular Office, or you can submit a judicial review within two months.
