What Is the Digital Nomad Visa in Spain?
The digital nomad visa is a work visa offered in Spain that specifically caters to those who wish to experience the Spanish lifestyle and culture while maintaining professional relationships overseas. It was introduced in 2022, providing a dedicated visa option to meet the growing demand as remote work arrangements are becoming ever more popular.
It offers a lot of freedom to digital nomads, as there are few limitations on the type of work that may qualify as long as it provides a livable income and is generally considered legal. Additionally, the digital nomad visa allows for added mobility within the Schengen region, making it the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to travel while working.
You should keep in mind, however, that there are residential requirements for Canadians who wish to upgrade to permanent residence and eventual citizenship, so you will need to make sure not to leave Spain for too long. In general, you should aim to travel for no more than one year within the first five years of your time in Spain to maintain eligibility for a permanent residence permit.

Spanish Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
Overview
To qualify for a digital nomad visa you will need to show that you can earn enough money to support yourself and any family members who might be coming to Spain with you as dependents.
Usually, this means that you will be asked to prove that you have a pre-existing professional relationship of at least three months with your employer and that this employer has been professionally trading for at least one year prior to your application.
If you are a freelancer with multiple clients, you will need to prove that you have been working for at least three months while reliably earning a minimum monthly income that shows your ability to actually make a living off your line of work. You will need to provide details of any past and future commissions, contracts or otherwise relevant business plans, to show that you will be able to continue earning money once you have moved to Spain.
Naturally, your work must be suitable for a remote arrangement and you will need to obtain all relevant licences or permits. The immigration official assessing your application will likely try to determine whether you have the necessary skills or experience to carry out the work you plan on doing but showing a successful work history may be enough.
Income Requirements for Digital Nomad Visa in Spain
You will need to be able to support yourself when living in Spain, so a core aspect of your application will be to prove that you have a work arrangement that allows you to do so. As such, you will usually need to earn above Spanish minimum wage. Specific numbers may vary but you should earn at least €25,920 annually which amounts to about €2,160 per month. Keep in mind that it will also be your responsibility to support any dependents you may wish to bring, which will increase the minimum income requirements.
At a glance, a family of two will require a monthly income of €2,970 and a family of three requires €3,240.
It is always best to double-check what the minimum income requirements are for your individual circumstances. Health Insurance for Digital Nomad Visa Spain
When applying to live and work from Spain, you will need to take the necessary precautions to make sure that you are not a risk to the Spanish public health sector. As such, you will be required to take out an adequate private health insurance policy that covers you for €30,000 or more. You must remain covered for the entirety of your stay, as will any family members you are bringing.
You will also be asked to obtain and submit a health certificate to show that you do not have any serious medical conditions that may prove a risk of contagion or similar for the Spanish general public.
Criminal Record Check for Spain Digital Nomad
Spain’s digital nomad visa assesses whether permitting your entry into the country is likely to interfere with the public interest. As such, you will need to provide a criminal record certificate that covers at least the last five years leading up to your application. You must be able to show that you have not engaged in any form of illegal activity.

Required Documents for a Spain Digital Nomad Visa
To show that you meet all the relevant eligibility requirements, you will need to submit supporting evidence when filing your digital nomad visa application. While specific documents may vary, you will likely need the following:
- Your valid passport and at least one copy
- Copies of your family members’ passports, if you are bringing them as dependents
- Details of your health insurance
- Your medical certificate
- Your criminal record certificate
- Details about your planned work arrangements showing that remote work will be suitable
- Details of your pre-existing professional activity covering at least the last three months
- Details of your employer or clients, including contracts or commissions that cover the last three months and extend into the future
- Proof that the foreign company you work for has been incorporated and trading for at least one year, if applicable
- A permission statement that permits you to work remotely from Spain specifically
- Financial details to show that you meet the income requirements, such as bank statements or pay stubs
- Details of your qualifications or relevant experience such as a university degree or professional certificate
You will also need to prove your relationship to any family members who are applying to join you in Spain as dependents.

How to Apply for Spain Digital Nomad Visa
Overview
To prepare for your application you should first make sure that you have all the relevant documents. As this visa requires you to submit a criminal record certificate it is important that you factor in the time it may take to carry out and obtain any relevant background checks. You will also need to obtain an official translation of documents that are not originally issued in Spain.
Once you are ready, you will need to submit your application and pay the required fees. The process may vary, depending on where you are applying from. You may apply from Canada or elsewhere abroad, but applications that are filed when you are already in Spain will usually be a bit cheaper and offer a longer initial validity for the permission you will be given.
Applying from Abroad
If you are applying from Canada or elsewhere outside of Spain, you will need to register for an appointment with your local Spanish immigration authority. This may be the Spanish embassy in Ottawa or the Spanish Consulate General in Toronto. You may also apply with a local visa application centre if one is available near you.
You will be asked to submit your application along with your accompanying evidence and the visa fee.
When applying abroad, the digital nomad visa that you will receive is usually valid for one year, after which you may apply to upgrade it to a Spanish digital nomad residential permission. While the initial validity period may be shorter, there is no overall effect on your ability to stay long-term, provided that you remain eligible.
Applying in Spain
An alternative application route allows for digital nomad permission applications to be filed directly in Spain. The main benefit of this approach is that you will be issued a digital nomad residential permit instead of the digital nomad visa, meaning that your permission will be valid for three years from the start.
Applications from within Spain may also be a little bit cheaper.
You should gather all required documents before travelling to Spain and be prepared to submit translations where relevant. If you are not a Canadian national but have only been living there, you may need to obtain a tourist visa before you are allowed to travel to Spain.
After you have submitted your application to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you will need to visit a police station to have your fingerprints taken. This is a requirement before you will be given your residential card.

Spain Digital Nomad Visa Fees for Canadians
The cost of applying for a digital nomad visa can vary, but you should usually be prepared to pay around €80. Depending on your circumstances you may also need to pay for additional permissions or licences, meaning that there could be extra costs that you should factor in.
The application fee for a digital nomad permission tends to be lower if you are applying in Spain directly.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Spanish Digital Nomad Visa?
Spanish digital nomad visas may take around 20 days to process, but this is not a fixed time. When planning your application it is always better to factor in possible delays, as the seasonal workload or other factors could mean that your local application centre needs more time to get to your application.
Your visa decision may also be delayed if you provide incomplete or inaccurate information so it is important that you double-check what exactly is required before submitting. Failure to do so could cause further issues such as a rejection or even legal trouble with the Spanish authorities.
Renewing and Upgrading Your Digital Nomad Visa in Spain
Depending on where you applied for your digital nomad permission, it might be due for renewal after one year (for applications that were filed from abroad) or three years (for applications that were filed in Spain).
You will generally be able to request a renewal for this permission, as long as you continue to meet the requirements.
After five years of legal residence, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence instead which can then be upgraded to citizenship after ten years of living in Spain.
Spanish Citizenship and Dual Nationality
Canadians who come to Spain on a digital nomad visa will usually be eligible to apply for naturalization after ten years of continuous residence.
To get to this step, you will need to live in Spain on a digital nomad visa (or another eligible national visa) for at least five years, during which you should not have stayed outside of Spain for more than one year in total. After five years you may apply for a permanent residence, which you can then upgrade to Spanish citizenship after another five years.
Unfortunately, Spain doesn’t generally recognize dual nationality for foreigners who wish to obtain Canadian citizenship and this will not be available for Canadians.
Keep in mind that this applies to Canadian nationals and may be different if you are simply a Canadian resident with another nationality, especially if you are from the European Union or wider European Economic Area, or if you are from a Spanish-American country like Andorra, Equatorial Guinea or the Philippines.
What to Know About Taxes on Spain Digital Nomad Visa
When you are professionally active in Spain you will need to pay taxes, even if you work for clients abroad. However, you will benefit from the IRNR (which is the Spanish Non-resident Income Tax Regime).
While the IRPF (Spain’s regular income tax) requires workers to pay 48% in taxes, remote workers on the digital nomad visa scheme will only need to pay between 15% and 24% instead.

FAQ
Generally, your work must be legal and financially viable. You should also note that this visa is intended for professionals whose clients or employers are mostly from outside of Spain. You should aim to receive at least 80% of your income from foreign sources.
If you are planning to start a business that will trade and operate in Spain, the digital nomad visa may not be the best option for you. You should instead apply for one of the other independent work visas such as the Spanish entrepreneur visa, if your business is deemed innovative enough, or the self-employed visa which accepts most other types of business ventures.
