Global Talent Visa UK: Requirements to Apply from Germany

The Global Talent Visa is a type of UK Work Visa that has replaced the Tier 1 Visa (Exceptional Talent) for leaders or potential leaders in digital technology, academia/research, or arts and culture.

German citizens who wish to live and work in the UK can apply for a Global Talent Visa if they meet the eligibility criteria. They may later apply for UK permanent residence and, ultimately, British citizenship.

This Work Visa aims to attract foreign talent to the UK by making living and working in the country as an industry leader easier, diversifying the British workforce and introducing fresh skills and experience to different industries.

Applicants aged 18 or over who are applying from Germany may be eligible for a Global Talent visa if they are a leader or potential leader in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology.

Most applicants must first secure an endorsement that confirms their exceptional talent or exceptional promise in their field. The endorsement route and evidence required depend on the applicant’s professional area.

For academia and research, an applicant may qualify through one of the following routes:

• An eligible academic or research appointment at an approved UK higher education institution or research institute
• An individual fellowship from an approved list
• A qualifying research grant from UK Research and Innovation or an endorsed funder
• Peer review by the relevant endorsing body

The British Academy assesses applications in the humanities and social sciences. The Royal Academy of Engineering assesses engineering and technology applications, while the Royal Society assesses applications in science and medicine. UK Research and Innovation administers the endorsed funder route.

Applicants who have won an eligible prestigious prize listed by the Home Office may apply for the Global Talent visa without first obtaining an endorsement. The applicant must be the named winner of the listed prize.

Global Talent Visa applications can be submitted on the Home Office website. Before filing the applications, it’s important to gather the requested documents. The specific information needed depends on the applicant’s situation, but it is common to be asked to submit:

• Valid passport or travel document
• Letters of recommendation or references from industry experts
• Evidence of English language proficiency
• Detailed CV
• Letter of endorsement from endorsing body
• Evidence of work, achievements, awards, or publications

There is an application fee to pay, which is £205 for individuals who have already obtained an endorsement (the endorsement costs £561) and £205 for those switching visas or applying based on an eligible award.

The full fee of £766 must also be paid by any dependents moving to the UK with the main applicant.

The second fee to expect is the Immigration Health Surcharge payment, which allows access to the UK’s universal healthcare system.

Once the application has been submitted, candidates will attend an endorsement review with the endorsement body they have applied to. If the review is successful, they can proceed with the application process, which may involve attending a visa interview. They must also attend an appointment to provide their biometric information, including fingerprints and photographs.

If the application is approved, the new Global Talent Visa holder can collect their Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) when they arrive in the UK.

Arts and Culture

Arts Council England covers combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, and visual arts.

The baseline is outstanding work, performed, presented, distributed, or exhibited internationally, with regular professional engagement over the last 5 years.

• A CV and three dated letters: two from established arts organisations you’ve worked with (one UK-based), and a third from another organisation or an individual with recognised standing in your field
• Exceptional talent: a substantial track record across at least two countries, backed by two qualifying pieces of evidence, significant media recognition, an international award, or internationally significant exhibitions, sales, or appearances
• Exceptional promise: an early-career applicant with a developing track record in one or more countries, still needing two forms of evidence

Architecture

RIBA handles architecture endorsements on behalf of the Arts Council England.

The bar is the same shape as arts and culture, outstandingly presented, published, or internationally exhibited work, with 5 years of regular engagement in the field.

• A CV and three letters: two from established architecture organisations (one UK-based), a third from another organisation or a recognised individual
• Exceptional talent: a track record spanning two countries
• Exceptional promise: a track record in one country
• Either route needs two qualifying pieces of evidence, an award, media recognition, or internationally significant publications or exhibitions

Design Industry

A new field was added to Appendix Global Talent in 2026, endorsed by the Design Business Association (DBA) on behalf of Arts Council England. It covers product, graphic, UX, service, industrial, and spatial design, among other design disciplines.

You must be professionally engaged in producing outstanding applied, published, distributed, or internationally exhibited work, with regular professional design work over the last 5 years.

• A CV and 3 dated letters of recommendation, 2 from well-established design organisations you have worked with (at least one UK-based) and a third from another organisation or individual with recognised experience in design
• Exceptional talent: a substantial track record in at least 2 countries, evidenced by significant media recognition, an international design award, or internationally significant professional appearances, publications, exhibitions, or sales
• Exceptional promise: an early-career applicant with a developing track record in one or more countries, evidenced by recent media recognition, an award nomination or shortlisting, or recognised appearances, publications, or exhibitions

Fashion Design Industry

The British Fashion Council assesses this field. You need a leading design role in a fashion business, plus 5 years of regular industry engagement.

• A CV and 3 dated letters of recommendation, 2 from well-established fashion organisations (at least one UK-based) and a third from another organisation or individual with recognised expertise
• Exceptional talent: outstanding work sold or exhibited internationally through catwalk or other shows, with a substantial track record in at least 2 countries
• Exceptional promise: a developing track record in at least 1 country, which can be evidenced through support from schemes such as British Fashion Council initiatives, Fashion East, or The Sarabande Foundation, or through orders from a luxury retailer

Film and Television

Pact assesses this field for Arts Council England, and only for exceptional talent; there’s no exceptional promise route here.

• A Main Award win at any point (Academy Award, an eligible BAFTA, Golden Globe, or Emmy)
• A nomination for, or significant contribution to, a Main Award in the last 10 years
• At least two Main Award nominations across the last 15 years
• Notable industry recognition across at least two productions, backed by distribution sales, media coverage, and the right mix of awards from Pact’s Notable Industry Recognition Awards List
• A CV and three letters are still required, two from established film and television organisations (one UK-based)

Digital Technology

Endorsed by Tech Nation. What counts as “exceptional” varies by applicant type: technical applicants need proven expertise in building or deploying technology stacks and infrastructure; business applicants need commercial, investment, or product expertise in leading digital businesses.

• A CV containing career and publication history
• Three dated recommendation letters from different established digital technology experts who have known the applicant’s work for at least 12 months
• Up to 10 documents showing that the applicant meets the evidential criteria
• Evidence of their connection to a digital technology business if they have been a founder or senior executive during the last 5 years
• Exceptional talent: applicants must provide at least two pieces of evidence across two qualifying criteria. These criteria cover innovation, recognition beyond the applicant’s occupation, significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions, and academic contributions through expert-endorsed or published research
• Exceptional promise: applicants must be at an early stage of their career and provide at least two pieces of evidence across two qualifying criteria. Their evidence can show innovation, recognition beyond their occupation, contributions as a founder or employee of a product-led digital technology company, or academic contributions through research endorsed by an expert

Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science and Medicine

The Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Academy, and UKRI split this territory among themselves by discipline.

Whichever body assesses you, you’ll need to already be an active researcher, academic, industry professional, or government employee.

• Fast track: applicants must hold, or have held in the last 5 years, an eligible peer-reviewed fellowship or award; hold an eligible academic or research appointment at an approved UK institution; or be hosted by a UKRI-approved organisation on a substantial research grant
• Academic appointments specifically must require a PhD or equivalent research experience, with research or innovation leadership built into the role
• Full peer review: a PhD or equivalent, active research work, and, for exceptional promise applicants, still early in career
• Full peer-review applicants need a CV and a letter from an eminent UK-based figure; exceptional talent applicants need a second letter from a senior figure at a recognised research or innovation organisation

Every field comes back to the same principle: your evidence has to map onto that field’s specific criteria, not just your career achievements in general.

Global Talent visa holders who want to remain in the UK after their current permission expires must apply to extend their visa before it expires.

To qualify for an extension, the applicant must meet one of the following requirements:

• They were granted their Global Talent visa on the basis of an endorsement, and the endorsing organisation has not withdrawn its approval
• They were granted their Global Talent visa on the basis of an eligible prestigious prize, and the prize has not been withdrawn
• They can show that they earned money in the UK during their current Global Talent visa in the field for which they received their endorsement or an eligible prestigious prize

Applicants must provide evidence of their earnings. This may include payslips or other documents that show income from work in their qualifying field.

A partner and children cannot be included in the main applicant’s extension application. Each dependant must submit a separate application to extend their permission. They can apply at the same time as the main applicant or before their current visa expires.

Applicants can extend a Global Talent visa for up to 5 years at a time. They can apply to renew their visa more than once, provided they continue to meet the extension requirements.

Applicants already in the UK may be able to switch to a Global Talent visa if they meet the route’s eligibility requirements and their current immigration status allows them to apply from inside the UK.

An applicant must submit their Global Talent visa application before their current visa expires. A partner or child cannot be included in the main applicant’s switching application. Each dependant must make a separate application to switch or extend their permission.

Student visa holders must also meet one of the following requirements before applying to switch:

• They have completed the course for which their Student visa was granted
• They have been studying full-time for a PhD for at least 24 months

The following people cannot apply to switch to a Global Talent visa from inside the UK:

• People on a visit visa
• People on a Short-term Student visa
• Parents of a child with a Student visa
• Seasonal Worker visa holders
• Domestic Worker in a Private Household visa holders
• People on immigration bail
• People granted permission to stay outside the Immigration Rules, including permission granted on compassionate grounds

Applicants in one of these categories must leave the UK and apply for a Global Talent visa from abroad.

Global Talent visa applications submitted from Germany are decided within three weeks under the standard processing service.

This processing period begins after the applicant has proved their identity and submitted the required documents. It does not include the time needed to prepare the application, obtain an endorsement, book a biometric appointment or respond to a Home Office request for further information.

Applicants who need an endorsement must complete the endorsement stage before making their Global Talent visa application. Applicants who have won an eligible prestigious prize listed by the Home Office can apply for the visa without first obtaining an endorsement.

A Global Talent visa can lead to indefinite leave to remain in the UK. The qualifying residence period depends on the basis of the applicant’s endorsement or an eligible prestigious prize.

• Applicants recognised as leaders under the exceptional talent criteria may apply after three years
• Applicants recognised as potential leaders under the exceptional promise criteria may apply after five years
• Applicants who qualify through an eligible prestigious prize may apply after three years

To apply for indefinite leave to remain, an applicant must have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period during the qualifying period.

They must also show that they earned money in the UK during their most recent period of Global Talent permission in the field for which they were endorsed or received the eligible prestigious prize.

Applicants aged 18 to 64 must pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English-language requirement. Where an English-language test is required, applicants must demonstrate English speaking and listening ability at level B1 or above.

Some applicants can meet the English-language requirement through their nationality, a qualifying degree or other accepted evidence.

A Global Talent visa does not automatically lead to British citizenship. However, a person who obtains indefinite leave to remain through the Global Talent route may later apply for British citizenship by naturalisation if they meet the relevant requirements.

Applicants who are not married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen must have held indefinite leave to remain for at least 12 months before applying. They must also have lived in the UK for at least five years before the Home Office receives their application.

To apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, an applicant must:

• Be aged 18 or over
• Have held indefinite leave to remain for at least 12 months, unless they are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen
• Have been physically present in the UK for exactly 5 years before the Home Office received the application
• Have spent no more than 450 days outside the UK during the five-year qualifying period
• Have spent no more than 90 days outside the UK during the final 12 months before applying
• Meet the English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic language requirement, unless exempt
• Pass the Life in the UK Test, unless exempt
• Be of good character
• Intend to continue living in the UK

Applicants married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen may be able to apply as soon as they obtain indefinite leave to remain. They must meet a separate three-year residence requirement and different absence limits.

Global Talent visa applicants can bring eligible dependants to the UK. Each dependant must submit a separate application.

Eligible dependants include a husband, wife, civil partner, unmarried partner and children under 18. A child aged 18 or over may qualify only if they already have permission in the UK as the main applicant’s dependant.

Partners must provide evidence that their relationship is genuine. Global Talent visa dependants can work, study and travel, but cannot work as professional sportspersons or sports coaches. They also cannot access most public funds or the State Pension.
