What is the UK Global Talent Visa?
The Global Talent Visa is a type of UK Work Visa that has replaced the Tier 1 Visa (Exceptional Talent) for leaders or potential leaders in digital technology, academia/research, or arts and culture.
German citizens who wish to live and work in the UK can apply for a Global Talent Visa if they meet the eligibility criteria. They may later apply for UK permanent residence and, ultimately, British citizenship.
This Work Visa aims to attract foreign talent to the UK by making living and working in the country as an industry leader easier, diversifying the British workforce and introducing fresh skills and experience to different industries.

Who is Eligible for the Global Talent Visa UK?
German nationals who are at least 18 years old and have successfully applied for an endorsement for proof of leadership or potential leadership can apply for the UK Global Talent Visa.
Endorsements can be obtained through individual fellowships, endorsed funders, peer review, and academic and research appointments. The following bodies issue them:
- UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
- The British Academy
- The Royal Academy of Engineering
- The Royal Society
Individuals without endorsement may still apply if they have won an eligible award that is recognised within their industry.

How to Apply for Global Talent Visa UK?
Global Talent Visa applications can be submitted on the Home Office website. Before filing the applications, it’s important to gather the requested documents. The specific information needed depends on the applicant’s situation, but it is common to be asked to submit:
- Valid passport or travel document
- Letters of recommendation or references from industry experts
- Evidence of English language proficiency
- Detailed CV
- Letter of endorsement from endorsing body
- Evidence of work, achievements, awards, or publications
There is an application fee to pay, which is £192 for individuals who have already obtained an endorsement (the endorsement costs £524) and £205 for those switching visas or applying based on an eligible award.
The full fee of £766 must also be paid by any dependents moving to the UK with the main applicant.
The second fee to expect is the Immigration Health Surcharge payment, which allows access to the UK’s universal healthcare system.
Once the application has been submitted, candidates will attend an endorsement review with the endorsement body they have applied to. If the review is successful, they can proceed with the application process, which may involve attending a visa interview. They must also attend an appointment to provide their biometric information, including fingerprints and photographs.
If the application is approved, the new Global Talent Visa holder can collect their Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) when they arrive in the UK.
Applying for Global Talent Visa From the UK Vs Germany
Global Talent Visa applications can be submitted online from the UK or Germany. There are two possible routes for German citizens already residing in the UK: applying by extension or changing immigration status.
How to Apply by Extending UK Visa
Candidates wishing to extend their UK Visa must do so before it expires. They must apply separately to extend their visa if they have any dependents.
To be eligible for a Global Visa extension, the applicant must have applied for a Global Talent Visa based on an eligible award or endorsement that has not been withdrawn. They must also have proof of income from their expert field, e.g., payslips.
Global Talent Visa extensions are in place for five years, and visa holders can apply for a new extension every five years.
How to Apply by Switching UK Visa
German applicants in the UK on a different visa can switch as long as they meet the Global Talent Visa UK requirements. Any dependents must complete a separate application for this, and all applications should be pursued before the visa expires.
In addition to meeting the general eligibility requirements for the Global Talent Visa, students who wish to switch their visa must have also studied for a PhD for at least one year and completed the course they were sponsored to study.
People who cannot apply to switch to the Global Talent Work Visa include those on immigration bail, people with permission to stay outside the immigration rules, and anyone with one of the following UK Visas:
- Seasonal Worker Visa
- Visit Visa
- Parent of a Child Student Visa
- Short-term Student Visa
- Domestic Worker in a Private Household Visa
Processing Times for the UK Global Talent Visa
Processing times for this visa are relatively quick, with most applicants receiving a decision within just three weeks.
To help everything run smoothly and prevent delays, it’s recommended to meet with an immigration solicitor who will guide you through the entire Global Talent Visa application process.
Does the Global Talent Visa UK Lead to Settlement?
Global Talent Visa UK holders can settle in the UK after they have spent three years (leaders) or five years (potential leaders) in the country.
However, they must prove they earned money within their field in their most recent leave period, as well as passing exams in the subjects of Knowledge of Language and Life, Life in the UK and the English language (minimum level of B1).
Does the Global Talent Visa UK Lead to British Citizenship?
It is not possible to become a British Citizen simply by holding a Global Talent UK Visa. However, candidates who have obtained Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) due to their Global Talent Visa can later acquire British Citizenship.
After having ILR status for one year, German candidates can apply for British Citizenship. There are specific eligibility criteria that need to be met, including:
- Intention to continue living in the UK
- Proof of knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic language
- Successful Life in the UK test
- Evidence of living in the UK exactly five years before the receipt of the application by the Home Office
All applicants must also be over 18 years old and demonstrate that they are of good character.
Can You Bring Dependents Under the Global Talent Category?
Yes, candidates can bring their partner or minor children to the UK, but each dependent must fill out a separate application, and the main applicant must provide evidence of a genuine relationship.
Global Talent Visa dependents can work, study, settle in the UK permanently (once eligible) and travel abroad. Still, they may not work as a sportsperson or coach or apply for a State Pension or most public funds.
