Which UK Transit Visa Do I Need When Travelling from Germany?
It’s important to apply for the right type of Transit Visa, as possessing an invalid visa leaves candidates in the same position as possessing no visa at all.
German residents can contact their airline to ask which type of Transit Visa they must obtain to pass through immigration control.
Direct Airside Transit Visas
A Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) may be required if you are changing flights in the UK without passing through UK border control. Whether you need a DATV depends on your nationality and whether you qualify for a transit exemption.

Visitor in Transit Visas
A Visitor in Transit Visa is for eligible travellers who need to pass through UK border control while travelling to another country and will leave the UK within 48 hours. You must also meet the relevant visitor-transit requirements, including being genuinely in transit and being able to enter your final destination.
UK Transit Visa for EU residents Visitor in Transit fees are £74.50 for German residents.
Transit Visas are designed for people who are staying in the UK for no more than 48 hours. If the journey is going to be longer than this, the candidate should apply for a Standard Visitor Visa, which comes with separate eligibility criteria and a fee of £135 for up to 6 months of validity.
This is also the visa that should be obtained if the candidate passes through the UK frequently over a period of 6 months.
How to Apply for a UK Transit Visa from Germany
The application process for both types of UK Transit Visa is the same. The only difference is that individuals applying for the Visitor in Transit Visa may be asked for additional documents to prove they are only passing through the UK in transit.
Once applicants know the visa type they require, they must submit the following:
- A current passport or other valid travel document
- Evidence that you are permitted to enter your final destination, such as a visa or qualifying residence permit where required
- Evidence of your onward journey, such as a flight booking, ticket or boarding pass
- Any documents supporting a transit exemption you are claiming
Next, an appointment must be scheduled at the candidate’s closest Visa Application Centre in Germany. At this appointment, biometrics will be taken and the applicant will be asked for evidence of their booked journey through the UK.
After the appointment, the UK Visa and Immigrations Service, also known as the UKVI, will investigate the application in more detail. The average UK transit visa processing time is three weeks.
How Long Can I Stay in the UK in Transit?
Each time a German resident travels through the UK on their way to another country, a visa for transit allows them to stay for 24-48 hours, depending on the type of visa they have applied for and the specific conditions the Home Office has declared.
Even long-term Transit Visas do not allow candidates to stay in the UK for more than 48 hours, as the purpose of this visa is to allow entry through the UK rather than permitting German residents to stay in the UK.
UK Transit Visa Processing Time from Germany
The standard processing time for a UK Transit Visa is 3 weeks. You will be notified of the decision by letter or email. You can pay £500 for priority processing to get a decision within 5 working days after submitting your application or £1000 for super-priority processing for a decision within 2 working days.
