What is the Spain Student Visa?
Spanish student visas are visas that are offered by a country to foreign nationals who wish to undertake some form of training or educational pursuit abroad.
The Spanish student visa is a type ‘D’ long stay visa.
Since Brexit, the United Kingdom is no longer part of the European Union or European Economic Area, and so the Spain Student Visa should be applied for by UK citizens and international applicants who do not have citizenship in the EU, EEA, or Switzerland.
Citizens of the countries listed above do not need to apply for a student visa to study in Spain.
The Spanish Student visa offers international applicants the opportunity to study in Spain for periods longer than 90 days within a 6 month timeframe.
If your course or project length is less than three months long, you will not need to obtain a student visa and should be eligible for a standard short-stay visa, also known as the Schengen visa.
Please note that although the UK is no longer part of the EU/EEA, it is still a part of the Schengen zone, and as a result, British nationals travelling to Spain to study for less than 3 months do not need to apply for any type of visa.

As of 2024, the minimum amount you must prove you have access to or are earning is €600 per month, or €7,200 per year. This number is based on the IPREM (Spain’s Public Multiple Effects Income Indicator) and may be subject to change, and is expected to increase in future

If you intend to have a family member join you, an additional 75% of the IPREM amount must be available to you and your family member on top of the minimum amount to support you, and then a further 50% for each additional family member you intend to bring to Spain with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The Schengen zone, the EU and the EEA are different, and Brexit only impacted immigration policies with the EU and EEA. The UK’s status within the Schengen area hasn’t changed, therefore British citizens do not need to apply for a Schengen visa to travel to Spain for tourism or short-term study purposes.
Yes. Visa extensions are available to those who are studying or training in Spain for an extended period. You must apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires; we recommend within 6-8 weeks to allow for any delays in the visa processing time.
In order to extend your student visa, you will simply need to reapply in the same way you did for your first visa.
If your study visa is coming to an end and you have completed your course, but you wish to continue living in Spain after your visa expires, you can look into converting onto a new visa best suited to your circumstances at that time, such as an internship visa or a work visa if you have been in Spain studying for three consecutive years.
You must apply for a new visa before your current visa’s expiration date.
