Working in the UK as an Albanian Citizen

The United Kingdom offers a range of employment opportunities for Albanian citizens looking to develop their careers, gain international work experience, and build a future abroad.

Whether you are a skilled professional, a healthcare worker, or looking for opportunities in other eligible sectors, understanding the UK work visa requirements is an essential first step towards working legally in the country.

Albanian citizens generally need the appropriate UK visa or immigration permission before starting employment in the UK. Many work visa routes require a job offer from an employer approved by the UK Home Office, along with meeting specific eligibility criteria, salary requirements, and English language requirements where applicable.

This guide explains the main UK work visa options available to Albanian citizens, the eligibility criteria, application process, required documents, and key considerations before moving to the UK for employment.

    UK Work Visas for Albanians

There are several work visas that you can acquire as an Albanian to work and live legally in the UK. Some of these visas are short-term (known as temporary work visas) while others offer long-term work options (i.e. usually for a year or more).

    Short-Term (Temporary) Work Visas

These visas allow you to work and live in the UK for a short period of time, usually less than a year. You can, however, re-apply for these visas on a regular basis.

    Seasonal Worker

Work either in horticulture (for 6 months) or in poultry (October to December). Can renew yearly. Must be over 18 and make minimum wage at minimum from an eligible sponsor. Seasonal workers don’t need to pay the healthcare surcharge as their stay is less than 6 months.

    Creative Worker

Allows creative professionals to work in film & TV, music, fashion, visual arts, or theatre in the UK for up to two years.

Must be sponsored by a licensed UK sponsor in the creative sector, meet minimal salary thresholds (varies by sector), and must be able to prove demonstrable talent in your field.

    Religious Worker

A religious member who works for the UK branch of their order. Must meet specific role and salary requirements and must be sponsored by an approved religious community.

    Charity Worker

Allows you to volunteer (work for free) at a registered UK charity. Must be sponsored by that charity and have funds to support yourself during your stay.

    Government Authorised Exchange

Allows Albanians to come and work in the UK to gain work experience or to do training, to participate in an Overseas Government Language Programme, or take up research or a fellowship through an approved government authorised exchange scheme.

You need a licensed sponsor and enough funds to support yourself (unless exempt). You must also receive at least the minimum wage for your job role in the UK.

    International Agreement

This is also a sponsored work route to the UK. You can work for an overseas government, a ‘recognised international organisation’, or as a private servant in a diplomatic household on this visa, provided your work is covered by international law or treaty.

    Long-Term Work Visas

There are also a variety of visas that allow you to stay in the UK for longer, with many of them even offering a seamless path towards settlement in the UK.

    Skilled Worker Route

You may apply for a Skilled Worker visa to come and work for a UK-based employer holding a valid sponsorship licence. The Health and Care Worker visa also falls under the skilled worker route, meant for qualified doctors, nurses and other health and care professionals.

Another option for skilled Albanian nationals is a Scale-up visa. It allows you to change jobs and/or employers after six months without permission from the Home Office. All of these visas provide a settlement route to the UK.

    Global Business Mobility Visas

If your current employer wishes to send you to work in their UK branch or subsidiary, or to set up and run their business operations, your option will be the Global Business Mobility route, which includes Senior or Specialist Worker visa, Graduate Trainee visa, Secondment Worker visa, Service Supplier visa, and UK Expansion Worker visa. None of the above options will allow you to settle in the UK.

The Global Business Mobility program can be complex. If you or your employer wants more information on which visa is best for the type of work you’ll be doing in the UK, get in touch with our expert immigration lawyers by using our callback form or calling +44 (0) 333 305 9375 today.

Representative of an Overseas Business Visa

If you are employed by a foreign newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation, your employer may post you in the UK on a long-term assignment as a representative of an overseas business. This visa provides a settlement option.

UK Work Visas Without a Job Offer

You may also apply to work in the UK without a job offer, provided you meet the eligibility criteria. These unsponsored work visa options include:

    • Global Talent visa, for recognised leaders or potential leaders in academia or research, arts and culture or digital technology
    • High Potential Individual (HPI) visa, for foreign nationals graduated from an eligible university in the past five years
    • Graduate visa, for international students who have successfully completed an eligible course in the UK

Only the Global talent visa among the above options provides a direct settlement route in the UK, but you may switch to a Skilled Worker visa from a HPI visa or a Graduate visa.

    Other UK Work Visas

In addition to the above categories, there are certain other UK work visa options for Albanians to consider, such as:

    • Overseas Domestic Worker visa, for foreign domestic workers in a private household
    • International Sportsperson visa, for elite sportspersons or qualified coaches with international reputation
    • Minister of Religion visa (T2), for a minister of religion, missionary, or member of a religious order who has been offered a job within a faith community in the UK
    • Innovator Founder visa, if you want to set up and run an innovative business in the UK

General Requirements for UK Work Visa

While the exact requirements will differ for each visa, there are a few common UK visa requirements for Albanian citizens that you will need for every work visa. These include:

    • A job in an eligible role working for a licensed sponsor
    • The certificate of sponsorship number
    • Proof of funds to support yourself for at least the first month (usually £1,270)
    • A valid Albanian passport
    • Two free pages (one sheet) in your passport

    Other Common Requirements

You may also need to prove your proficiency in English, your expertise/CV (for specialised roles), and a UK-NARIC report that compares your non-UK degree to UK ones (for a fee). While these requirements are common for visas like the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa, they are not universal. You won’t need to prove your English proficiency or degree equivalence if you are applying for a Seasonal Worker visa, for example.

    First Month Support Funds

For every work visa, you will need to prove that you can support yourself for the first month. This amount is £1,270 and must be in your account for 28 consecutive days before you apply for your visa.

If you don’t have this amount, then you can alternatively have your employer sponsor you for the first month by completing the “Sponsor certifies maintenance” section on the certificate of sponsorship, which can be found under “Additional Data”.

How to Apply for a UK Work Visa from Albania

The good news is that the process to apply for a UK work visa is similar for every type of visa.

    1. Find and accept a job from a UK business that is licensed to sponsor overseas workers from the Home Office
    2. Get the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your sponsoring employer (not applicable for work visas that don’t require a sponsor, such as a Global Talent visa)
    3. Get all your supporting documents in order (proof of funds, CV, English language proficiency evidence, etc.)
    4. Apply online for the visa from Albania (or from your current country of residence). Start with creating an account on the Home Office website with an email ID
    5. Have all your supporting documents (including the CoS you have received from your sponsoring UK employer) and other relevant information ready with you so as to answer the questions on the online form completely and accurately
    6. After completing the form, submit it online along with scanned copies of your supporting documents
    7. Pay the fees online using a debit or a credit card
    8. Book an appointment with a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point to provide your biometric details (i.e., your facial images and fingerprints)
    9. Get your biometrics taken
    10. Wait for the decision

    Proving Your Identity

You will have to prove your identity as part of your UK work visa application process. If you are eligible to prove your identity through the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app, you can use it to scan your required documents to prove your identity.

Otherwise, to prove your identity, you will have to:

    • Book an appointment with the VFS Global visa application centre (VAC) in Tirana, if applying from Albania, to submit your biometric details, or
    • Book an appointment with your nearest UKVCAS service point if you are already in the UK on a different visa and now switching to a work visa

Work Visa to ILR & Citizenship in the UK for Albanians

Certain long-term work visas, like a Skilled Worker visa or a Global Talent Visa, offer a path to settlement in the UK. Usually, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), also known as settlement in the UK, after legally and continuously living and working in the country for a certain number of years.

The residence requirement varies depending on your work visa category. Those on a Skilled Worker visa can apply for ILR after five years, while an Innovator Founder or a Global talent visa holder can apply for settlement after three years.

Plus, you will usually have to meet certain other Home Office requirements, such as:

    • You continue meeting your initial visa conditions (e.g., meet or exceed the minimum threshold or the “going rate” for your specific job, etc.)
    • Your sponsor provides a written confirmation stating that they still require you to work for them in the UK in your licensed job role
    • You have not spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period during those 3 or 5 years
    • Your knowledge of English language is at par with CEFR level B1 or above (which you may have already satisfied during your initial work visa grant)
    • You have passed the Life in the UK test
    • You have no unspent criminal convictions or history of UK immigration law breaches

Apply for British Citizenship by Naturalisation

You may apply to naturalise as a British citizen after holding your ILR status for at least 12 months. Those with a British spouse or civil partner can apply immediately after receiving ILR in the UK.

To be eligible, you must not have spent more than 450 days outside the UK during the previous five years and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months.

You must also fulfil the good character requirements and intend to continue living in the UK.

What You Can and Cannot Do On a UK Work Visa

While every single visa will allow you to work with a UK-based employer, what you can and cannot do will change slightly on a visa-to-visa basis. That’s why it’s so important that you have experts on your side to advise you on the right visa route to take for your career, as well as outline what you can and cannot do with your specific visa.

Though each visa is slightly different, there is a lot of overlap, which is why you can expect these limits with your visa:

What You Can Do with a UK Work Visa

With a UK work visa, you can:

      • Work in the UK in the role outlined on your certificate of sponsorship
      • Live in the UK for the duration of your visa

Most visas, for example, the Skilled Worker visa, will also allow you to study and train in certain situations (for example, if it’s relevant to your career).

Most of these work visas allow you to bring dependents, though you will need to check the specifics. For example, those with a Health and Care Worker visa can only bring dependents if their job code is eligible.

What You Cannot Do with a Work Visa in UK

There are, of course, many limitations when it comes to every work visa. In general, you won’t be able to:

      • Change employers or jobs (unless you are in a recognised ‘modern slavery’ condition)
      • Take a second job or work in a role not described in your certificate of sponsorship
      • Get access to public funds

Some visas do allow you to change roles, but only if you first update your visa. For example, if you get promoted at an NHS organisation, and your new role doesn’t fit your old visa, you will have to update your visa to continue working in the UK.

                Frequently Asked Questions

How long you can stay depends on the length of your visa. If you remain in the United Kingdom for five years consecutively on your work visa, you can then apply for settled status, otherwise known as Indefinite Leave to Remain.

You can only bring your spouse and other dependents if you are on a specific work visa. For example, you cannot bring your spouse with you on the Seasonal Worker visa, but you can if you are in an eligible role working under the Health and Care Worker visa. Our expert team will be able to help you understand what you can and cannot do on each specific visa.

To increase the chances of your visa being approved, you need to have all of your documents in order. If documents are missing or need to be confirmed, there will be a delay in your application process.

If you are actively looking for a job that can give you sponsorship, your best bet is to start by searching the Skilled Worker visa shortage occupations list and then searching for those roles on job sites.

The easiest UK work visas to obtain are either the Seasonal Worker visa, or the Health and Care Worker visa (if you are skilled in that field), as these are two areas that have high demand.

No, if you are travelling from Albania to the UK you will need to get a UK Standard Visitor visa, which lets you stay up to 180 days in total per visit. To stay and work in the UK, you will need a work visa.

No — if you are an Albanian citizen, you generally cannot work legally in the UK without permission to work, such as an appropriate work visa.

You may be able to work without applying for a separate work visa if you already have qualifying UK immigration status, for example:

                • Indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
                • Settled or eligible pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
                • A family visa that permits employment.
