Eligibility Requirements for UK Business Visas

Each visa specified in this guide has specific eligibility requirements that will be discussed in more detail, however, there are some general requirements that typically apply to all types of UK Business visa. These general requirements include the following:

    • You must be at least 18 years old.
    • You must provide financial evidence that you can support yourself during your time in the UK.
    • You must also prove that you have sufficient funds to pay for a return trip to your home country once your visa expires.
    • If applicable, you must provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language.
    • You must have a clean criminal record.

Different Types of UK Business Visas for Albanians

There are a variety of UK Business visas available to Albanians. Each has its own benefits, restrictions, and eligibility requirements. Below is an overview of each visa category:

Standard Visitor Visa (Visit on business)

The Standard Visitor Visa allows you to visit the UK for business for up to 6 months on a short-term visit visa. There is also the option to select a long-term visit visa, which can grant you access to the UK for business for 2, 5 or 10 years. It’s important to note that the duration of each visit is limited to 6 months.

Permitted business activities on the Standard Visitor visa include the following:

    • Attending interviews, meetings, conferences, and seminars.
    • Negotiating and signing deals and contracts.
    • Promoting at trade fairs (without selling).
    • Receiving work-related training not available in your home country.
    • Giving non-profit talks.
    • Conducting site visits and inspections.
    • Overseeing the delivery of goods and services from a UK company to your overseas company.
    • Delivering training or sharing knowledge on internal projects with UK employees of your overseas company.
    • Work on installation, dismantling, repair, service, or advice on equipment and software through a contract.

This visa type restricts you from working for a UK company or as a self-employed individual, unless you are engaging in permitted paid engagements. For any other paid or unpaid work outside of the listed permitted business activities, an additional work visa is required. The Standard Visitor visa also restricts access to any public funds.

Standard Visitor Visa (Visit for a paid engagement or event)

Previously known as the Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visa, this visa category was merged into the Standard Visitor visa in January 2024 and is designed for Albanian professionals who wish to attend the UK for paid short-term business activity. Eligibility requirements state that you must have a written invitation for a specific event or engagement in the UK. If you are eligible for this visa type, you’ll be entitled to stay in the UK for up to 6 months, however, your paid engagement or event must be within the first month of your stay.

This visa restricts you from taking full or part-time teaching positions, and you cannot apply if you are retired. Lastly, your activities must be directly related to your area of professional expertise.

Below are some examples of the types of professionals that can be invited under this visa category:

    • Professional artists, entertainers, musicians, and sportspersons.
    • Qualified lawyers for client representation.
    • Lecturers for specific lectures.
    • Conference speakers.
    • Academics for student examination or assessment.
    • Air pilot examiners.

    Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent visa is for Albanians that are leaders or potential leaders in certain professional fields. The fields covered are academic and research, arts and culture, and finally digital technology. This visa typically requires an endorsement from an approved UK organisation which proves your ability as a leader or potential leader within your specific field. This does not apply, however, to those who hold eligible awards in their field.

This visa allows you to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years at a time. There is no total limit on the duration of stay in the UK, but you must renew your visa when it expires. Upon expiration of your visa, you’ll be eligible to extend it to any duration between 1 and 5 years. Alternatively, you can apply for indefinite leave after 3 or 5 years, depending on whether you are a leader or potential leader, which grants you permanent residency and access to benefits if you are eligible.

You are entitled to work as an employee, as a self-employed individual or as a company director under this visa.

    Innovator Founder Visa

The Innovator Founder visa is designed for Albanian entrepreneurs that wish to set up and run an innovative business in the UK. The eligibility criteria for this visa states that your business idea must be innovative, viable, scalable, and receive endorsement from an approved body.

This visa can grant you a 3-year stay in the UK, with endorsement review meetings taking place after 12 and 24 months. There is the possibility to extend the visa for another 3 years with no limit on extensions. Moreover, you’ll be eligible to apply for settlement after 3 years in the UK.

Permitted activities under this visa category include setting up and working for your business, undertaking skilled work outside of your business, and travelling abroad and returning to the UK. You cannot, however, work as a professional sportsperson or claim most public funds or the State Pension.

      Global Business Mobility Visas

Global Business Mobility visas are a category of visas designed to facilitate the entry of Albanian professionals into the UK. Visa holders can work according to what is specified in their visa category, study, bring dependents (if eligible), volunteer, and travel, but cannot access public funds, change jobs without updating the visa, take a second job, or apply for permanent settlement.

There are five visa categories available to Albanians within the Global Business Mobility visas. Below is an overview of each category:

      Graduate Trainee Visa

The Graduate Trainee visa is for individuals coming to the UK to work in a managerial or specialist role as part of a graduate training programme for their employer’s UK branch. Eligibility for this visa requires that you are an existing employee of an organisation approved by the Home Office as a sponsor, and have worked for your foreign employer outside of the UK for at least 3 months. Furthermore, your salary must be at least £24,220 per year.

Your stay in the UK is limited to the time on your certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days, or 12 months, whichever is shorter. Whilst this visa cannot be extended, you can reapply for it from outside of the UK.

      Secondment Worker Visa

If you are transferred by your employer to the UK for a job that is part of a high-value contract with a UK organisation, you might be eligible for the Secondment Worker Visa. In order to qualify for this visa, you must have worked for your overseas employer for at least 12 months outside of the UK. Your job in the UK must be on the list of eligible occupations, and you’ll also need a certificate of sponsorship. A successful application will allow you to stay in the UK for a maximum of 2 years.

      Senior or Specialist Worker Visa

The Senior or Specialist Worker visa allows Albanian professionals to work in eligible roles at their employer’s UK branch. Eligible applicants must be current employees of a Home Office-approved organisation, have worked for their employer outside the UK for at least 12 months, possess a certificate of sponsorship, undertake a job from the list of eligible occupations, and earn a minimum of £45,800 annually.

The visa duration is the shorter of the certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days or 5 years, with the possibility of extension. The total stay is capped at 5 years within a 6 year period for salaries under £73,900, or 9 years within a 10 year period for higher salaries.

      Service Supplier Visa

The Service Supplier visa is for Albanians who are contracted to provide services to a UK company. Eligibility requires being an overseas employee or self-employed provider serving a UK business under an international trade agreement, undertaking an eligible job, holding a certificate of sponsorship, and having at least 12 months of professional work experience.

The visa duration depends on the trade agreement, allowing stays of 6 to 12 months, with a maximum cumulative UK stay of 5 years within any 6 year period.

      UK Expansion Worker Visa

The UK Expansion Worker visa is for Albanian citizens aiming to establish a UK branch of an overseas business not yet trading in the UK, specifically targeting senior managers or specialist employees. Eligibility requires possessing a valid certificate of sponsorship, prior employment with the company outside the UK, undertaking a role from the eligible occupations list, and earning the minimum salary threshold.

The visa duration is the lesser of 12 months post-job commencement or the sponsorship certificate’s validity plus 14 days, extendable by 12 months with a 2-year cap.

Documents Required for UK Business Visas

Each UK Business visa requires specific documentation that you must submit as part of your application. There are, however, some general documents that typically apply to all types of UK Business visa. These documents include the following:

      • Current passport or valid travel document.
      • Your job title, annual salary and occupation code.
      • A certificate of sponsorship reference number.
      • Evidence of your employer’s name and their sponsor licence number.
      • If you are self-employed, a business registration certificate.
      • A police clearance certificate.
      • Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself.
      • Proof of English proficiency.

Understanding the UK Business Visa Application Process

      1. Prove Your Identity: You’ll either need to provide biometric information at a visa application centre or use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to scan your identity document. You’ll also need to create or sign into your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
      2. Start Your Application: Applications for UK Business visas take place online and require that you submit all of the relevant information and documentation for your visa category.
      3. Decision Timeline: A decision on your application is usually made within 3 weeks, however, you may be able to pay a fee in order to receive a decision sooner.
      4. Successful Application: If your visa application is successful, you’ll receive a biometric residence permit or a digital immigration status, depending on how you applied.
