What is the Global Impact Work Visa?

The New Zealand Global Impact Visa is an open work visa that allows holders to remain in New Zealand for up to 3 years. It is aimed at entrepreneurs, investors and start-up teams with the potential to launch innovative businesses that positively impact New Zealand and the wider world.

The Global Impact Visa (GIV) is only available to applicants accepted into the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF), and this selection process is done twice a year. There is no alternative route, and EHF fellows are given exclusive access to this visa. A cap of 400 candidates over the 4-year duration of the EHF programme means that only 100 applicants per year are offered an Edmund Hillary fellowship.

With the Global Impact Visa holders can live and work in New Zealand with the option to apply for permanent residence after 30 months if they remain EHF fellows. Successful candidates can work anywhere in New Zealand and for any employer. Self-employment is also allowed under the visa conditions.

    Global Impact Visa Requirements

While only applicants selected by the Edmund Hillary Fellowship are eligible for the Global Impact Visa, they still need to meet other eligibility requirements. Successful EHF candidates must also supply evidence of identity, meet certain character criteria and provide supporting documents.

The documents required for the Global Impact Visa application are:

    • Offer letter from EHF
    • Certified copy of your passport or certificate of identity
    • Two recent, acceptable photos of your head and shoulders (not passport photos)
    • Certified copy of your full birth certificate
    • English language test results
    • Medical certificate
    • Police certificate less than six months old
    • Documentary evidence of your claimed skills
    • Proof of funds

All Global Impact Visa applicants must demonstrate their good character, English language proficiency and state of health. If family members are accompanying the main applicant, they must apply for visas based on their relationship to the applicant under the Partnership and Dependent Children categories.

One of the conditions of the New Zealand Global Impact Visa is that you, as the applicant, must be a fit and proper person. Any businesses you influence must comply with all employment, taxation and immigration laws.

Applicants must be free from any convictions for dishonesty, financial impropriety or fraud and have no record of an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office or New Zealand police for any business-related offence.

    Financial Requirements and Sponsorship

An essential part of applying for the New Zealand Global Impact Visa is having access to at least NZD 36,000 maintenance funds to support yourself and any family for the first year. Proof of these financial resources can be any of the following:

    • Bank statements
    • Job offer with an annual salary of at least NZD 36,000
    • Scholarship valued at NZD 36,000 or above for the first year
    • Assets recently valued at NZD 36,000 or more
    • Another source of income which will provide this minimum of $NZ36,000 for the first year

Successful candidates selected for the EHF and GIV based on an investor profile must provide evidence that these investment funds were legally earned. Proof can include:

    • Employment agreement or payslips
    • Tax returns
    • Dividend statements
    • Asset valuations
    • Business performance reports

Global Impact Visa Application Process and Costs

There is a set procedure to follow to apply for a New Zealand Global Impact Visa, and it must be done in two stages.

The first stage is to apply to the Edmund Hillary Fellowship as an entrepreneur or investor. The fellowship application process is rigorous to attract those who can create transformative solutions to global problems.

EHF will assess your application, and if accepted into the programme, you will be sent a Letter of Offer. Candidates then need to apply online for the Global Impact Visa.

Immigration New Zealand Global Impact Visa Conditions

There are several conditions that applicants must meet for this visa. Failure to meet them can result in significant delays to your application and possible rejection.

Applicants must meet the character requirements and disclose all relevant information may affect their application, such as:

    • Convictions for offences that resulted in a prison term of five years or more
    • Convictions within the last ten years with a prison sentence of 12 months or more
    • Removal, exclusion, or deportation from any country, including New Zealand
    • If previously prohibited from entering New Zealand

A visa may not be granted if the New Zealand authorities believe you could be a security or public interest risk, a threat to public order, or you may intend to commit an offence serious enough to incur a prison sentence.

Police certificates are required for anyone over 17 years of age and should be from your own country or any country where you have lived for a year or more within the previous ten years.

Visa applicants must be in good health and meet residence health requirements. This may mean undergoing a general medical examination and having a chest x-ray.

As part of your application for the Global Impact Visa, you must meet the English language requirements and prove it by providing the following:

    • An acceptable English language test result less than 2 years old
    • Evidence that you are a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Ireland and have spent a minimum of five years studying or working in those countries or Australia or New Zealand
    • Proof of recognised qualification comparable to New Zealand level 7 Bachelor’s degree gained in one of the countries listed above and for which you studied for at least two years
    • Evidence of recognised qualification equivalent to postgraduate New Zealand qualification gained in one of the countries listed above and for which you studied for at least one year
    • Confirmation from the Edmund Hillary Fellowship that you demonstrated a high level of English

Although you cannot include family members on your work visa application form, they can apply for their own visas, citing their relationship to you.

There are no restrictions on the type or location of your employment while in the country, and self-employment is also permitted. However, you must not apply for or receive any welfare assistance while in New Zealand.

Cost of Global Impact Visa Work Visa

The cost for Immigration New Zealand to process your Global Impact Visa application is NZD 860. You can pay online with a debit or credit card or by Union Pay. This fee is non-refundable if your application is denied.

Up to 80% of applications are processed within five weeks. Delays and possible rejections may occur if you have not provided all the required supporting documents or supplied all the necessary information.

To ensure that your visa application is a smooth and stress-free process, contact Total Law at 0333 305 9375 or via our website and speak to our knowledgeable immigration experts about how we can help you.

    Duration of Stay

The Global Impact Visa is valid for 36 months. After 30 months in New Zealand, fellows of the EHF can apply for permanent residency. However, you must have retained the support of the Edmund Hillary fellowship programme during that time to be eligible. You must also still meet the conditions under which the visa was granted to become a permanent resident.

Multiple trips in and out of New Zealand are allowed with the GIV, and there is no time limit on these as long as your visa remains valid.

The Global Impact Work Visa does not target any particular industry or sector. Rather, it is aimed at individuals and investors who can offer innovative solutions to some of the world’s problems and create a positive impact globally using New Zealand as a base.

The Global Impact Work Visa is valid for three years, while many other work visas are limited to 12 months or less. The GIV also allows holders to work for any employer in any area of New Zealand and to pursue self-employment.
