The UK Youth Mobility Visa: An Overview

The Youth Mobility visa allows young people from eligible countries to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years. You will generally need to be between 18-30 years of age in order to be eligible for this scheme.

This is with the exception of New Zealand nationals, in which case you are eligible to participate up to the age of 35. From 31st January 2024, you will also be eligible up to the age of 35 if you are from either Australia or Canada.

Whilst Bangladesh is not one of the countries included in the scheme, you may still be eligible if you are a British Overseas Citizen, a British Overseas Territories Citizen, or a British National (Overseas).

There is also a similar scheme for Indian citizens.

As this is a temporary work visa, you will generally not be able to extend your stay. This is with the exception of citizens of New Zealand, who can extend their stay for one additional year.

You will also not be eligible for eventual permanent residence in the UK under this scheme. If you wish to permanently settle in the UK, you will need to instead switch to an eligible long-term visa.

Eligibility Requirements Of The UK Youth Mobility Visa

There are a number of eligibility requirements associated with this scheme. These are as follows:

    • You must be from one of the following countries:
      • Australia
      • Canada
      • Monaco
      • San Marino
      • Iceland
      • Hong Kong
      • Japan
      • South Korea
      • Taiwan
      • a British Overseas Citizen, British Overseas Territories Citizen, or British National (Overseas)
      • From 31st January 2024, Andorra and Uruguay will also be included in this scheme
    • You must generally be 18-30 years of age, with the exception of New Zealand, where you can be up to 35 years old. This exception will also apply to Australia and Canada from January 2024.
    • You must have £2,530 in savings, and be able to provide evidence of this

Whilst India is not included in the scheme, if you are an Indian national then you may be eligible for a similar scheme called the India Young Professionals Scheme. Under this scheme, eligible Indian nationals can also receive a temporary UK work visa. In order to be eligible for this scheme, you must:

    • Be an Indian national or citizen
    • Be 18-30 years of age
    • Have a level of education which is equivalent to at least a Bachelor’s degree
    • Have at least £2,530 in savings
    • Have no minor dependent children
    • Be selected by the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot

Thus, whilst the India Young Professionals Scheme is a different route, it has similar eligibility requirements.

The main differences are the requirement that applicants are educated to at least the equivalent of Bachelor’s level and stricter rules regarding whether or not applicants can have dependents.

UK Youth Mobility Visa Application Process

The exact application stages for the Youth Mobility visa will depend on your nationality.

If you are from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, or Taiwan, you will first need to be selected in the Youth Mobility Scheme ballot. The details of this ballot are given in the next section of this article.

However, from 31st January 2024, the ballot selection requirement will no longer apply to nationals of Japan or Korea.

Regardless of your nationality, you can apply online for this visa. You can do so via the UK government website. As part of the application process, you will need to pay the application fee and the healthcare surcharge. You will also need to submit all of your required documents to the online portal.

Additionally, you will also need to prove your identity as part of the application. One way of doing this is through using the UK Immigration: ID Check app. This app will scan your documents and verify your identity.

You may also attend an appointment at a visa application centre, where your identity will be verified and your biometric information (your photograph and fingerprints) will be taken.

This will allow you to receive a biometric residence permit. In Bangladesh, these visa application centres can be found in Dhaka and Sylhet.

Once you have completed all the requirements, your application will be considered and you will then receive a decision. If your application is successful, you will then be granted a visa and will be authorised to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.

What Is The Youth Mobility Scheme Ballot?

In order to be eligible for a UK Youth Mobility visa, certain nationals must first be selected by the Youth Mobility Scheme ballot. At the time of writing in December 2023, nationals of Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan must all first be selected by the ballot in order to be eligible for the scheme.

However, from 31st January 2024, only nationals of Hong Kong and Taiwan will need to apply via the ballot. Nationals of Japan and South Korea on the other hand will be able to apply for the Youth Mobility Scheme at any time without having to first enter the ballot.

To enter the ballot, you must send an email to the UK Home Office. Ballots are open for 48 hours and open in January and July.

You may only submit one entry per person; any additional submissions will not be counted. Once you have entered the ballot, you will receive an automated email which confirms your entry.

Your email must meet certain requirements, which can be found on the UK government website. More generally, it will need to include your name, date of birth, passport number, and mobile number.

If you are from Hong Kong, you will send your entry email to HongKongYMS@homeoffice.gov.uk.

If you are from Taiwan, you will send your entry email to TaiwanYMS@homeoffice.gov.uk.

If you are successfully selected in the ballot, you will now be eligible to apply for the UK Youth Mobility Scheme visa. If you are unsuccessful, you will still be able to apply for future ballots.

Note that, if you are applying for the India Young Professionals Scheme visa, you will also first need to be selected by ballot in order to be eligible.

This is a different ballot to the one described above and is called the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot. In 2023, there were 3000 spaces available in the ballot, which were assigned in February and July.

      What Documents Will I Require?

There are a number of documents which you will require for this visa type. These are as follows:

      • Your passport
      • Evidence that you have at least £2,530 in savings
      • A negative tuberculosis test result (if applicable to your country)
      • If you are from Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, or Taiwan, you will also need to include the email you received from the UK Home Office confirming that you were successfully selected in the Youth Mobility Scheme Ballot. Note that, from 31st January 2024, nationals of Korea and Japan will no longer need to be selected by the ballot in order to be eligible for the Youth Mobility Scheme
      • If you are from San Marino, you will need to provide a letter from the  Directorate of Political and Diplomatic Affairs of the Republic of San Marino Department of Foreign Affairs. This letter will need to confirm that you are suitable for the scheme and will need to be less than 6 months old when you submit your application
      • If you are from Iceland, you will need to provide an Icelandic Criminal Certificate for Private Use (Sakavottorð). This will need to be less than 6 months old when you submit your application

      Application Fees

There are a number of costs associated with this visa type. You will have to pay the application fee, which is £298. You will also need to pay the healthcare surcharge, which allows you to access healthcare from the National Health Service (NHS). This is likely to be £470 for this particular visa.

You may also need to pay to have your required documents translated into English or Welsh, in which case you must make sure to use a verified translating service. The exact cost of this service will depend on the translator which you choose.

Additionally, in some cases applicants choose to pay for legal assistance in order to help with their application. Contact Total Law today on +44 (0)333 305 9375 to learn more about how we can help with this.

      Application Processing Time

You can apply for this visa type a maximum of 6 months before your intended arrival in the UK. Once your application has been received, it generally takes 3 weeks for it to be processed. However, this may be subject to change based on how many other applications are currently being processed.

In order to ensure that your application is processed as quickly as possible, make sure to submit all required documents at the point at which you apply.

Also make sure that your application does not contain any mistakes and is not missing any information.

If you are asked to provide further information once you have submitted your application, make sure to do so as quickly as possible. Delays in doing so will lead to a longer processing time and may lead to your application being unsuccessful.

UK Youth Mobility Visa And Possibilities To Extend Stay

It is not generally possible to extend the Youth Mobility visa. However, if you are from New Zealand, you will have the option of extending your visa for up to one year.

In order to be eligible, you must still be living in the UK and still have a valid Youth Mobility visa. You will only be able to extend the visa once.

You will also need to pay again for both the £298 application fee and the £470 healthcare surcharge.

If you intend to extend your visa, you can do so online. You will need to submit your application within 28 days of the expiry of your current visa. Whilst you await a decision, you should not travel outside of the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or Ireland.

If you are not from New Zealand, however, it may be possible for you to extend your stay in the UK by switching to a different visa type.

For instance, many Youth Mobility visa holders switch to a Student visa, in order to remain in the UK for purposes of study. If you choose to do so, you must make sure that you meet the eligibility criteria of the new visa type.

You must also make sure that you apply for the new visa before the expiry of your current visa, in order to maintain legal status in the UK. Note that you will still have to pay any application costs associated with the new visa.

Benefits And Restrictions Of UK Youth Mobility Visa Holders

The UK has much to offer its young visitors. It includes numerous areas of natural beauty, a rich culture, and a strong economy. As such, entering the UK under the Youth Mobility Scheme offers a number of benefits.

When in the UK under this scheme, you will be able to study in the UK and to work in most jobs. You will also be able to work in a self-employed capacity. You can set up your own company in the UK, so long as you use rented premises, equipment which does not have a worth exceeding £5000, and you do not have employees.

However, there are also a number of limitations for a Youth Mobility Scheme applicant to consider. You will not be able to work as a professional sportsperson, for example, including working as a coach. You will also be unable to extend your stay, with the exception of New Zealand nationals.

Additionally, you will be ineligible to access public funds. This means that you will not be able to receive welfare benefits, such as Universal Credit and Housing Benefit.

You will also be unable to include any family members as part of your application. If you have a spouse, for example, they would need to apply for the scheme in their own right.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, you will need to apply for the UK Youth Mobility Scheme from outside of the UK. This is to ensure that you enter the UK on a valid visa. If you are applying to switch to this scheme or to extend your stay as a New Zealand national, however, you may apply for the scheme from within the UK.

Note that, when applying for the scheme from outside of the UK, you may need to attend a meeting at a visa application centre. Whilst Bangladesh has two of these centres, you may also attend a meeting at a centre in another country, if this is more convenient.

In the UK, permanent residence is known as indefinite leave to remain (ILR). Under the UK Youth Mobility Scheme, you will not be eligible for indefinite leave to remain in the UK. This is because the Youth Mobility visa is a temporary work visa and so is only intended to cover short-term stays in the UK.

If you eventually wish to settle in the UK, you will instead need to switch to an eligible long-term visa, such as the Skilled Worker visa.

There are no official language requirements for the UK Youth Mobility visa. However, your required documents must be translated into either English or Welsh by a certified translator.

Additionally, you will likely find it significantly easier to find employment in the UK if you have proficiency in the English language.

Whilst you can apply for the Youth Mobility visa if you have dependents, your dependents will not be able to join you under this scheme. They would need to apply for a separate visa in their own right.

Note that, if you are applying for the India Young Professionals Scheme, you will not be able to apply if you have any minor dependent children. This means if you have any children who are under 18 and live with you or for whom you are financially responsible. In this respect, the India Young Professionals Scheme visa differs from the Youth Mobility Scheme visa. The details of both schemes are given in this article.
