    Studying In The UK

The United Kingdom is a popular study destination for many Bangladeshi students and the reasons are not far-fetched. Here are some of the reasons below:

    High-Quality Education

The UK has some of the best schools in the world, with over 89 schools appearing in the top 1300 institutions. Some schools in the UK, like the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, are usually in the top 5 schools in the world.

The ranking of these schools is a testament to the quality of education that is obtainable in the UK. This also means that certificates obtained from UK schools are highly valued, thus improving your chances of landing a better job when you leave school.

    Fast-Paced Education

Bangladeshi students also move to the UK for studies because of the fast-paced education, particularly higher education. A master’s degree in the UK usually takes 1 year to complete, as opposed to other countries where it takes 2 years.

    Job Opportunities

Another incentive that drives many Bangladeshi citizens to the UK for studies is the promise of jobs. The UK labour market is large and takes up thousands of workers annually.

There are many job opportunities for students to take up while studying. The UK also has the Graduate Visa, an opportunity for students who graduated from UK schools to stay back for 2 years and seek employment.

In addition, the UK is a melting pot of diversity. Studying in the UK is an ample opportunity to mix with students from different backgrounds and nationalities. This diversity offers you the chance to learn more about people you otherwise would not have known if you were not studying in the UK.

    Health Care

When studying in the UK, the students’ healthcare is taken care of by the government via the services of National Health Services (NHS). This means you do not have to worry about medical expenses while on a UK student visa.

    Improved English Speaking Skills

Another reason why many Bangladeshi citizens choose to study in the UK is that it presents a chance to improve their English speaking skills. Studying in the UK means you’ll be taught in English.

Through a series of assessments, examinations and assignments, you become better at speaking, reading and writing the English language. This improvement gives you an advantage in any country you want to work in.

Bangladeshi students tend to pay cheaper tuition fees in the UK than in other countries. In many countries, it takes 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree, whereas in the UK, it could take 3 years. It takes 2 to 4 years to complete a postgraduate degree in many countries, but it takes 1 to 3 years to do the same in the UK.

    Straightforward Visa Application Process

Finally, another attraction to the UK is the ease of application for a student visa. The UK student visa application process is straightforward to understand.

The Types of UK Student Visas

There are 3 student visa types available for Bangladeshi students in the UK. They are:

      The Student Visa

The UK student visa is for Bangladeshi students who want to complete a higher education in the UK. The visa is for students taking undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate diploma courses in the UK.

You’ll usually be at least 16 to be eligible for this visa. Applicants who are 16 and 17 must submit a letter from their parents that proves they consented to the student moving to the UK for studies. The duration of the student visa is usually 1 to 5 years. The exact duration depends on your course of study.

      Child Student Visa

This visa is for Bangladeshi citizens aged 4 to 17. The Home Office issues this visa to Bangladeshi citizens whose parents wish to send them to primary and secondary schools in the UK.

The students who want to apply for this visa must also get the consent of their parents. Parents will have to show their accommodation plans for the children on this visa if the school they are going to does not have a dormitory.

      Short-term Study Visa

The short-term study visa is for Bangladeshi citizens looking to study English language courses in the UK. The visa is typically for courses with durations of no more than 11 months.

Eligibility Criteria And Requirements Of The UK Student Visa

Below are the UK student visa requirements for Bangladeshi students:

      Eligible Course

You must have an offer to study a course full-time in the UK. The course must be taught in line with the instructions in the national curriculum. The course you are coming to the UK to study must lead to a qualification that is in tandem with your level of education.

      Licenced Sponsor

Your course of study must be taught by a licensed student or child student sponsor. After confirming they have a place for you on the course, the school will issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Upon issuance of the CAS, you’re expected to apply for a visa within 6 months.

      English Language Proficiency

Bangladeshi students need to prove that they have adequate knowledge of the English language before they can get a visa to study in the UK.

You can show you meet the language requirement by passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) by a Home Office-approved test provider . A level and GCSE results are also acceptable for this requirement.

Some schools may waive the English language requirement if you can prove your last study was in English. They can also waive it if you have a degree from a country regarded as English-speaking.

For Bangladeshi students looking to study in the UK, there are 2 categories of financial requirements to meet. The first requirement is the tuition fee you’re supposed to pay to the school. The second is the funds you need to prove that you have for your living expenses in the UK. The tuition fee you need to pay depends on your school. They will tell you how much to pay. You must pay the fee for up to 1 academic session or prove that you have the money in your account.

An acceptable bank statement for UK Student visa should show that you have the following:

      • £1,334 per month for 9 months if your school is in London
      • £1,023 per month for 9 months if your school is outside London

Students on Child Student visas studying in schools with boarding houses will be told how much they need to pay for living expenses on their CAS. The amount you’ll need to show will increase if you are researching or doing a doctorate and intend to travel to the UK with your family.

      Parental Consent

Bangladeshi students below 18 who wish to study in the UK must get a letter attesting that both parents know they are moving to the UK for studies. This letter must be signed and dated.

      Documents Needed to Apply

Below are the documents you must present to prove your eligibility for the UK Student visa:

      • Bangladeshi passport
      • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) obtained from your school
      • Bank statements showing you have enough money to pay for your tuition and support yourself in the UK
      • Valid ATAS certificate if your school requires it
      • Signed letter from parents or guardians showing they consent to your travel if you are under 18
      • Birth certificate showing that you are related to your parents or guardian if you are under 18
      • Signed letter from your sponsor promising to pay your tuition and living expenses
      • Evidence you have sufficient knowledge of the English language
      • Tuberculosis test results from a Home Office-approved clinic.

How To Apply For a UK Student Visa From Bangladesh

To apply for the UK Student visa, take the steps below:

Step 1: Apply for a Suitable Course

The first step is applying to a school. Browse the list of courses available in UK schools and make your pick. Meet their requirements and then get an offer from them.

Step 2: Obtain a Certificate of Acceptance of Studies

If you gain admission and satisfy all the requirements set by your school, they will issue you CAS after you accept your offer. It usually costs £25 to get the CAS.

        Step 3: Gather Your Documents

The next thing to do is to prepare your documents. Use the documents required section as a checklist. Note that all of the documents must be in English or Welsh. If they are not, you’ll need to present certified translations.

Step 4: Pay the Application Fees

After preparing your documents, you need to pay the visa fees:

        • If you are applying for a Student or Child Student visa, you must pay £490
        • If you wish to apply for a short-term student visa, you must pay £200

Student visa applicants must pay the immigration health surcharge fee:

        • £235 if the duration of your short course is between 1 to 6 months
        • £470 if the duration of your course is between 6 to 12 months
        • £705 if you are doing a 1 year course. You’ll pay this amount because you can stay in the UK for 4 months after your course ends

This fee applies to each member of the family you’re taking with you to the UK. Remember to add the visa and health surcharge fee payment receipts to your supporting documents.

        Step 5: Apply Online

The Home Office can only accept Student visa applications online. You can apply for a visa at the Home Office website. You must scan and upload your documents at the application portal.

Ensure the information you’re completing on the online portal is the same as on your documents. Discrepancies cause delays in processing time and sometimes visa denial.

        Step 6: Schedule an Appointment

You’ll have to schedule an appointment with the visa application centre in Bangladesh. You can use the VFS Global visa application centre in Dhaka. When you get there, you need to submit your passport and then have your biometric captured.

Step 7: Wait for a Decision

After you visit the visa application centre, you must wait 3 weeks for the Home Office to decide on your application.

You can pay for expedited services. If you pay an extra £500 for priority service, you will get a decision in 5 working days after your biometric is captured.

If you pay an additional £1,000 for super-priority, you will get a decision the next working day after your biometric is captured. Note that bank holidays and weekends do not count.

        Step 8: Pick Your Visa

The Home Office will notify you of their decision via email. They will also tell you where and when to pick up your student visa.

You will also get a biometric residence permit when you arrive in the UK. Only when you get a positive response from the Home Office should you start making travel plans to the UK.

Duration of Stay on a UK Student Visa

The duration of your stay on a UK student visa depends on your course duration. Short-term study visa holders can stay in the UK for the duration of their course up to 11 months.

If you are under 16 and on a Child Student visa, you can stay for up to 6 years and 4 months. If you are 16 or 17 and on a Child Student visa, you can stay for up to 3 years and 4 months. Student visa holders can live in the UK for the duration of their course and an extra 4 months.

Bangladeshi citizens with a UK Short-term Student visa can enter the UK 1 week before their course start date.

Child Student and Student visa holders can enter the UK 1 month before their course start date. Note, however, that you cannot enter the UK before the date approved on your visa.

What You Can And Cannot Do On a UK Student Visa

Bangladeshi citizens on a UK Student visa can vote during elections because they are from a Commonwealth country.

You are also permitted to travel out of the UK so far it does not affect your studies. Student visa holders can visit certain countries visa-free because they have a British residence permit (BRP).

You cannot claim public benefits or contest for elections. Child Student visa holders cannot bring dependents to the UK or study at a higher institution. Student visa holders can only bring dependents if they are carrying out research or trying to get a doctorate.

Working Whilst On a Student Visa

Child Student visa holders can work in the UK if they are up to 16. They can only work 10 hours a week part-time when school is in session and full-time during holidays. If you are on a Child Student visa you cannot be self-employed, take full-time jobs, or work in sports or entertainment.

You can work with a Student visa for up to 20 hours a week in the UK when school is in session. During vacations, you can work full-time. You cannot work in sports, be self-employed or study at a mainland school. Short-term Student visa holders are not eligible to work at all.
