Applying for a Schengen Visa in the UK

The UK is not a part of the Schengen area. Bangladeshi citizens cannot apply for the Schengen visa in the UK from outside the UK. However, the Schengen visa application in the UK is allowed for those with a valid UK residence permit.

    Who Can Apply?

To be able to apply for a Schengen visa from the UK, the applicant must have a valid residence permit that will continue to be valid for at least another 3 months from the date the applicant intends to leave the Schengen area.

Should the condition not be fulfilled, the consulate or embassy where the applicant lodges their application will reject the application immediately.

Non-resident Bangladeshi citizens in the UK who are tourists or those who are on a visa will not be able to file a visa application in a Schengen embassy in the United Kingdom and should instead apply to acquire a Schengen visa at a Schengen embassy in their home country.

Those who are living in the UK temporarily should first ensure that they are eligible to apply for a Schengen visa in the UK. Not all UK residents will be eligible.

It is also possible for those who are eligible and have a 3-month UK visa to extend their visa for an additional 3 months to be able to apply for a Schengen visa in the UK. However, when doing this, it is critical to apply for this extension before the current visa expires while the applicant is still residing in the UK.

      The Schengen Visa Requirements

      Overview

Every Schengen state will be represented in the United Kingdom by embassies and consulates. Each will have specific requirements that applicants need to meet. That being said, there are some common requirements for each country and visa type that are considered ‘general’.

Applicants should prepare the necessary documentation for their Schengen visa application before applying within the UK. This includes the following:

      • A valid travel document or your Bangladeshi passport. When using a passport, ensure the following are true:
        • The passport was issued within the past 10 years.
        • The passport has at least 2 full blank pages; one will be required for the visa stamp, and an additional page should be available.
        • The passport should be valid for a minimum of 3 months after the date that the applicant leaves the Schengen area.
      • A valid UK residence permit or some other form of ID card. A UK residency permit must also be endorsed in the individual’s actual passport or otherwise on a new biometric card.
      • An application form is filled out and signed by the applicant.
      • A passport-format photo with a light background, brightly coloured and shows the full facial features of the individual. The photo can be no more than six months old and needs to be glued to the application form. Be aware that any applications received with photos stapled to them will be rejected.
      • A cover letter that explains the applicant’s purpose for visiting Schengen.
      • Proof of the travel arrangements of the applicant, showing a round-trip flight or reservations. Other forms of proof are accepted if they show intended transport and a complete itinerary if there will be several Schengen states visited on the trip, or if the trip covers several Schengen states and several non-Schengen locations.
      • Travel insurance for the Schengen area states that the applicant is covered in the event of a medical emergency or repatriation while in the Schengen area. This requires a minimum coverage insurance policy of €30,000.
      • Hotel reservations require proof of participation in group travel (should this be the case).
      • A recent statement of a UK-based current account, or traveller’s checks that show funds of at least £55 per person for each day spent in the Schengen area. Photocopies of some of the original documents are also required to be submitted. However, documents should not be any older than a month.

      Employment-Based Requirements

There are additional requirements based on those from Bangladesh who are employed in the United Kingdom:

      • A reference letter of employment in the UK that confirms and specifies the following information:
        • Date of hire
        • Salary
        • Dates of vacation
        • Position in company

Should the applicant have been employed for less than 3 months, the letter from the employer should state very clearly when the individual started working.

Those who are self-employed will also have additional required documents. These include:

      • A recent letter, from within the last 3 months, which states:
        • The individual’s professional activity.
        • The start date of self-employment.
        • The business registration.
        • Revenues from their Accountant Bank manager, the Local Chamber of Commerce, or their solicitor.
        • A VAT certificate.

There will also be required documents specific to those who are students from Bangladesh in the UK. This includes the following:

      • An official and recent letter from the school, university, or college in the last 3 months that states the following:
        • The type of study
        • The individual’s attendance record
        • The details of the individual’s course

Bangladeshi retirees will also need to show an additional document in their application:

      • A pension statement from the previous 6 months

Bangladeshi applicants who are unemployed and are married to a citizen in the UK will need to provide additional documentation in their application, including:

      • A recent confirmation of employment letter from the UK spouse’s employer stated:
        • The employment start date
        • The position held by the company
      • The spouse’s valid passport
      • An official translated marriage certificate. The translation should be in English or the language of the Embassy in the country where the marriage took place
        • Should the marriage certificate have been issued outside of the EU, it must have been stamped by the Foreign Office in the country that issued it or in the Embassy in the UK.

      UK Schengen Visa Application Fees

The fees associated with a Schengen visa application from the United Kingdom can vary. The fees will depend on the age of the applicant and currency fluctuations. However, applicants can expect:

      • £36.50 for children between 6 and 12 years of age
      • £51 for adults

Validity Period Of The Schengen Visa

Schengen visas are relatively short-stay visas, enabling the visa holder to circulate in the Schengen area for no more than 90 days within 180 days. The specifics of the validity period do depend on the type of Schengen visa, however.

For example, a multiple-entry Schengen visa will be valid for a longer period, typically 6 months to 5 years. That being said, even in this case, applicants with this visa type can only spend 90 days in any rolling 180-day period in the Schengen Area.

Each specific type of Schengen Visa will note the validity period upon receipt of the visa. Ensure you apply for the visa appropriate for the period required.

Schengen Visa Application Process: Step By Step

        Overview

Applicants for a Schengen Visa in the UK should apply for their visa at the embassy or consulate in their destination country.

However, if the applicant intends to visit various countries, they should apply at the consulate of the country where they will be spending the majority of their time.

If the applicant is spending an equal amount of time in more than one Schengen state, they should apply at the consulate or embassy of the country they will be entering first.

In the UK, it is also possible to apply through the NFS Global company, which has centres in Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and London.

Applications must be submitted to the local relevant embassy, visa centre, or consulate no later than 15 days before the start of the applicant’s journey. Applications may also not be submitted any earlier than 6 months before the journey.

In some cases, applicants may have to book an appointment before they make their application.

Applications can be completed on the UK online website; however, the applicant’s physical presence is required for the process to be completed. This is due to a necessary interview and in-person biometrics collection.

        Step-By-Step Guide

To apply for a Schengen visa as Bangladeshi citizen residing in the UK, follow the steps below.

        1. Determine the type of Schengen Visa you need. This could be one of the following:
          • A Uniform Schengen Visa:
            • Single-entry visa
            • Double-entry visa
            • Multiple-entry visa
          • Limited territorial validity visa
        1. Collect the documents needed for your application. While all applications require certain documents, some specific situations will require additional documents.
        2. Learn where you should apply for your Schengen Visa. This could be at an embassy, consulate, or visa centre.
        3. Schedule your visa appointment at the relevant centre. This can be done online, by phone, or by email.
          • To schedule an online appointment, visit the website of the consulate or embassy you will apply at and find the link to make an appointment.
          • To schedule an appointment by email or phone, find the contact information for the embassy or consulate to do so on their website.
        4. Attend the appointment. There will be an interview process included in your appointment; this will typically be regarding your travel plans, finances, and reasons for the trip.

The interview will determine the legitimacy of the applicant’s intent to visit and verify that they are genuine. This appointment should only last 20 to 60 minutes.

        1. Pay the fee for the visa. The visa fee in the UK for making this application will typically be between £51 and £36.50, depending on the applicant’s age and the currency fluctuations.

Upon paying the fee, the applicant will be given a receipt. This fee is non-refundable, so applicants must ensure they meet all requirements and have adequately prepared all their documents before they apply.

        1. Await a decision. After the application process is completed, the applicant must wait for a decision to be made on their application. These visas generally take 15 days to process. This is true for Schengen visa applications worldwide. That being said, the time taken for an application to be processed will depend on the specifics of the individual application and the destination country.
        2. If the application is successful, the applicant will receive a visa stamp in their passport, and the individual will be allowed entry.
