What is the British Passport Application Process?

Once you have become a British Citizen you will be able to submit your British Passport application. Your passport will allow you to prove your status as a UK national after either naturalisation or registration.

Your passport will serve as a travel document, allowing you to enter and leave the country freely, free from immigration checks and controls. This document can be used to prove your identity when accessing services and benefits and also to prove your rights to work, study, and live permanently in the UK.

How to Apply for a British Passport from Bangladesh

You can request your passport using one of the following methods:

    • Post – You can directly send your application and supporting documents to the UK Visas and Immigration agency (UKVI). It is vital that you do not forget to attach the correct postage stamp to your envelope, these can be bought at the local post office.
    • Online – This is the easiest and cheapest way to apply. The application wizard is designed to guide you through each step of the process.
    • Post Office Check & Send Service – Your local Post Office can check your collection of documents which can then be sent to HM Passport Office using Special Delivery. This send service does cost an additional fee.
    • By appointment – one-day Premium and one-week Fast Track services are only available upon appointment.

If you are completing your British passport application form from abroad (such as from Bangladesh), you must follow a different procedure. The process you will need to go through depends on the particular rules of the country where you are completing your application. It is highly recommended that you contact our highly skilled team of immigration professionals for country-specific advice on applying for a British passport from overseas.

Important Information Before Submitting a Passport Application

To avoid any delays when submitting your application, it is essential to fill in each part correctly. When you are completing your documents, you should bear in mind the following:

    • If you have chosen to change your name, you must use your new name on your application.
    • You must list all of your maiden or previous names.
    • The name on your passport should match the name on your documentation.
    • An adult passport is valid for ten years.
    • If you currently hold a child passport, you can use it until it expires, even if you are over the age of 18.
    • You must also enter details of any previous UK passport you have held.
    • To apply for an adult passport, you must be 16 years or older (or will be within three weeks from the date of your request).

What Documents do I Need to Apply for a UK Passport?

When you submit your application, you must ensure that only the original documents are sent. Photocopies are not accepted, but it is possible to get an official copy of the evidence you cannot gather.

The following documents are required as part of the British passport application process:

    • Evidence of one of your parent’s immigration status status (if you were born in the UK after January 1983).
    • Your adoption or birth certificate (if you were born in the UK before January 1983).
    • Your certificate of naturalisation or registration if you were born abroad.
    • Details of someone who can confirm your identity (if you are applying with a paper form)

You must provide a certified translation if your documents are not in English or Welsh (such as Bengali).

Will my British Passport Application Documents be Returned?

Your documents will be returned separately from your passport once your application has been completed. If you wish, you can pay for secure delivery and tracking for an additional fee.

You will also be responsible for providing a valid UK address to which your documents and passport will be delivered. Any personal information used or provided during your interview will be destroyed after issuing your passport.

      Do I need a Counter-Signatory for a British Passport?

A counter-signatory is someone of your choice who can confirm your identity. Their role is to confirm that that to the best of their knowledge, the information you have provided in your application is correct and that they have known you personally for at least two years.

      Your countersignatory must:

      • Be a UK or Irish citizen and currently living in the UK
      • Be a professional person, or be recognised as “a person of good standing in their community”
      • Not be living at your address
      • Not be working for the Home Office
      • Not be related to you by birth or marriage, nor within a personal relationship to you

What are the Fees for a UK Passport Application?

The cost of your British Passport application will vary depending on which type of application you choose to make and from where you submit your form.

If you are applying from the UK as an adult, you need to pay the fees as follows:

      • Online applications: £82.50
      • Paper applications: £93

If you are applying from outside of the UK as an adult, you will need to pay the fees as follows:

      • Online applications: £94
      • Paper applications: £104.50

These prices are correct as of February 2024

How Long Does it Take When Applying for a British Passport?

If this will be your first adult British passport, the application process may likely take longer as there will be more checks carried out by Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) to ensure you are entitled to a UK passport.

When you apply for a British passport, you should allow at least six weeks to process your passport application.

You are also required to send your existing travel documents with your application. Therefore, you mustn’t book any travel after you apply until you have received your British passport.

Is my child able to also apply for a British Passport?

Yes, if your child is a British citizen, they are eligible for a British passport. Once issued, a child’s passport is valid for five years.

When you apply for your child’s passport, the parent or guardian must sign the form and act as the official applicant. The form requires both parents to be given when the application is made, if you are unable to provide details of one parent, then you must include a letter stating why this is. For example, if the child was adopted by a single parent or you are the only parent named on the birth certificate.

If the child is not a British citizen, contact our team of highly qualified and skilled immigration lawyers at Total Law. We can discuss your child’s eligibility and the options available to you and your child.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

You may be asked for an interview depending on your circumstances. This is done to confirm your passport application and must be book at the local HM Passport office.

This usually takes around half an hour. If successful your case will be finalised but you will still have to wait whilst your passport is mailed to you.

To be able to apply for your British passport, you must have already been granted a naturalised status. Therefore, you will need your Certificate of Naturalisation to apply for your passport if you are not British by birth or descent, e.g., from Bangladesh.

Your passport will be valid for ten years from the issue date, but it can be suspended or withdrawn at anytime. If any of the following apply, you may not be able to get a new passport or your existing passport may be invalidated or taken from you:

                  • You are suspected of a serious crime and a warrant is out for your arrest
                  • A court order has prevented you from being able to own a UK passport or has placed restrictions on your travel
                  • A European Union or United Nations order has restricted your travel
                  • You have been brought back to the UK at the government’s expense and have not repaid the owed amount
