Studying in Ireland from the UAE
Ireland is a culturally rich and economically strong country which boasts a number of excellent universities. For citizens and residents of the UAE, it is a popular destination when pursuing higher education.
There are a number of world-class universities in Ireland, such as Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University College Cork, and the University of Galway. Ireland’s universities are popular with students from around the world, including the UAE.
Citizens of the UAE do not require a visa when visiting Ireland for trips of up to 90 days. This means that, if you are a UAE citizen planning on entering Ireland in order to complete a short course with a duration of less than 90 days, you will not generally require an Irish visa in order to do so. If you are a UAE citizen who wishes to study for longer than 90 days, however, you will generally need to apply for a Study visa.
If you are a resident of the UAE but not a citizen, whether or not you require an Irish visa will depend on your particular nationality.
The visa for stays of under 90 days is the Short Stay C visa. The visa for longer stays is the Long Stay D visa. The route which is right for you will depend on your nationality and on the duration of your studies.

Study Options in Ireland: A Comprehensive Guide
Overview
Throughout this article, the details of how to pursue Irish study options will be explored in more detail.
Overall, there are 3 main routes to studying in Ireland as an international student:
- attending an English language or third-level course (i.e. undergraduate to postgraduate study)
- attending a fee-paying private primary or secondary school
- completing a short-term course
The general details of each route are provided below:
English language or a third-level course
In order to study in Ireland for over 90 days, you must select a study option which is included on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP). This list includes the following types of course:
- English language programmes which are at least 25 weeks long
- Higher Education Programmes ranging from level 6 to level 10 (i.e. undergraduate to postgraduate study) according to Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications
- Professional awards
- Foundation programmes
A full list of eligible programmes can be found on the Irish government website.
For studies of longer than 90 days, you will generally have to apply for a Long Stay D visa.
Fee-paying private primary or secondary school
This route is intended for minor children studying at a private fee-paying school in Ireland. Note that only fee-paying schools are eligible for this route; applications on the basis of a non-fee-paying school will be rejected.
Any fees associated with attendance at the school will need to be paid before the child’s arrival in Ireland.
Short-term
When studying in Ireland on a short-term course (i.e. a course which is under 90 days long) you will be regarded as a visitor, and so will need to apply for a Short Stay visa. This visa isn’t specifically for study; it is a general Visitor visa which can also be used to complete short-term courses in Ireland.
When in Ireland as a visitor, you will generally need to apply for a Short Stay C visa.

Ireland University Ranking
Ireland is a culturally rich and educationally strong country which offers a wide range of excellent universities. The choice which is right for you will depend on your particular area of study and preferred region. However, according to Times Higher Education, the following 9 universities are the best in Ireland in 2025:
- Trinity College Dublin
- University College Dublin
- RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences
- Dublin City University, University College Cork, University of Galway
- Maynooth University, University of Limerick
- Technological University Dublin
Each of these institutions provides access to a high-quality university education. Before making your final decision on which university is right for you, it is important to consider a range of factors, such as whether you prefer a city or countryside environment, your particular field, and the entry requirements of the institution in question.
Study Visa Application for Ireland: Step-by-Step Guide
There are a number of steps which you will need to complete when applying for an Irish Study visa. While the steps vary slightly depending on your particular route, they are generally as follows:
Step 1: Apply to and receive an offer from an eligible Irish educational institution.
Step 2: Once you have received an offer to study, submit a visa application online, via the Automated Visa Application and Tracking System (AVATS). Make sure to complete all sections fully and accurately.
Step 3: Follow the instructions given on the Summary Application Form which will be generated by the online application system. For example, this form will give you instructions on where to submit your supporting documents. You will then need to print, sign, and date the Summary Application Form and submit this along with your other supporting documents.
Step 4: Pay the visa application fee. Note that this fee is not refundable in the case of a withdrawn or unsuccessful application.
Step 5: Send your supporting documents for processing, following the instructions given on your Summary Application Form. Note that all documents must be translated, using a certified translation service, into either Irish or English. Your documents will be returned to you once your application has been processed.
Step 6: Wait for a decision on your application.
Step 7: If your application is successful, you will be granted a visa which can then be used to enter Ireland. Your documents will also be returned to you, via post.
Ireland Student Visa Requirements for UAE Residents
Overview
The visa requirements vary depending on whether you are applying for a Short Stay C visa (for study of under 90 days) or a Long Stay D visa (for study of over 90 days).
If you are a UAE citizen, you will not require a visa in order to enter Ireland for a short stay of under 90 days. However, if you are planning on a longer period of study, you will generally require a Study visa.
If you are a UAE resident who does not have citizenship, whether or not you require an Irish visa will depend on your specific nationality. If you are a citizen of an EU country, for example, you will not require a visa in order to complete long-term study in Ireland.
In the event that you do require a visa, the specific requirements are as follows:
Short Stay C visa
When applying for an Irish Short term study visa, you will need to provide evidence of the following:
- You have a valid reason for entering the country
- You have sufficient financial means to support yourself for the duration of your stay: specifically, you have access to either €833 monthly or €6,665 annually in order to support yourself during your time in Ireland
- You are able to provide detailed information on your prospective trip
- You intend to return to your country of origin upon the expiry of your visa (i.e. you have strong ties to your home country which demonstrate your intention to return there)
Note that the Short Stay C visa is not specifically a Study visa; it can also be used to travel Ireland and to visit friends and family. As such, enrollment in an educational programme is not a necessary condition of this visa type. However, unlike the Long Stay D visa, it only allows stays of up to 90 days.
Long Stay D visa
This visa is intended for long-term international students who are studying in Ireland. There are a greater number of eligibility criteria which must be satisfied in order to obtain this visa, including:
- A letter of acceptance from an eligible university
- Evidence that you have the academic ability to complete the course in question (e.g. past transcripts or exam results)
- Evidence that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself: specifically, proof that you or a sponsor have access to at least €10,000 at the time of application
- Evidence of private medical insurance
- Evidence of sufficient proficiency in either the English or Irish language
- Evidence that you intend to return to your country of origin upon completion of your studies

Ireland Student Visa Processing Time from UAE
Visa processing times vary depending on the number of other applications also being processed and whether or not any additional information is requested. In general, however, you should expect to wait about 8 weeks before receiving a decision. This may be longer if your application is incomplete or you are asked to provide additional evidence in support of your application.
In general, you can minimise your waiting time by ensuring that your application is completed correctly and thoroughly, and making sure to provide any additional information which is requested as quickly as possible.
Arrival and Immigration in Ireland: What to Expect
When arriving at the Irish border, you will be expected to provide evidence that you have a valid reason to enter the county. As such, you should be prepared to present your passport and visa. There are a number of other documents which it is also recommended you bring in order to maximise your chances of successfully entering the country, including:
- Proof of your ability to financially support yourself during your stay
- A copy of the application letter which you submitted as part of your application
- Records of your travel plans (e.g. accommodation and transport booking confirmations)
- Proof of travel/ medical insurance
Note that possession of an Irish visa does not guarantee that you will be allowed to enter the country. You will need to convince the immigration officer that you have a valid reason for entering Ireland. In order to maximise your chances of a successful entry into the country, make sure to bring as much evidence in support of your trip as possible.
Extending Your Study Visa in Ireland
In general, you can study in Ireland on a Student visa for up to 7 years. If you are still enrolled in an Irish educational institution, continue to meet the visa eligibility criteria, and have not yet been in the country as a student for the full 7 year maximum, you will generally be able to extend your visa.
You will need to satisfy the following criteria when applying for an Irish Student visa extension:
- Still be in Ireland on a valid visa at the time of your extension application
- Still be enrolled in an eligible course
If you are in Ireland on a Short Stay visa studying on a short-term course, it may also be possible to extend your stay. In this case, you will need to provide evidence of extenuating circumstances, such as being medically unfit to travel. In most cases, however, extensions of a Short Stay C visa are not possible.
What if My Ireland Student Visa is Rejected?
If your visa application is unsuccessful, you will receive a letter which provides the reasons for the decision. Any original documents which you submitted as part of your application will be returned to you by post.
You also have the option of appealing the decision. You will need to do so within 2 months of the date listed on your Letter of Refusal.
Note that there is no fee for appealing the decision.

During the Summer and Winter break, you will be authorised to work full time – specifically 40 hours a week.
Note that working more than these specified hours can lead to your visa being revoked and ultimately to deportation. It could also jeopardise your ability to re-enter the country in the future.
Yes, if you are applying for a Long-Term Study visa then you will generally need to provide evidence that you satisfy certain English or Irish language requirements.
There are a number of authorised test providers, including the Cambridge English Language Assessments (CELA), the Duolingo English Test, the English Test for Academic and Professional Purposes (ETAPP), and the International English Language Competency Assessment (IELCA).
Note that specific universities may have additional English language requirements in order to make you an offer of study.

In general, you will not be able to sponsor family members when in Ireland on a Student visa. This means that you will not generally be able to be joined by your spouse or children, for example, when studying as an international student at an Irish university.
However, there are occasionally very limited exceptions to this. These will generally be decided on a discretionary basis and should not be relied upon when applying for an Irish Student visa.
Violating the terms of your visa can lead to your visa being revoked and to deportation from the country. It could also lead to you being denied re-entry to Ireland in the future.
